  1. Hey guys,

I apologize if I have missed this somewhere, but are there any tips on using CKAN with the Steam Deck/Steam OS?  Kerbal is playing awesome, but I miss my beloved CKAN from my windows install.

I know it says CKAN works on Linux in the github, and I've tried to mess around with Mono, but honestly, I'm a linux idiot, only messing with it in passing over the years, getting confused, and just going back to windows.  But, with the Steam Deck, I'm trying to make a legit run of it.  I guess I could always just copy over my files from my working windows install, but I'd sure like to figure it out on the Steam Deck itself.  Desktop mode is no problem, and that's where I installed Mono and it said do that, but now I am stuck again.

    Thanks for any help!!

  2. Wow, @linuxgurugamer you truly are on a roll... seems just about all of my recent mods in my current game are yours now ha!  Thanks so much for the hard work!  Can't wait to get this installed when I get back to my home machine.

    Thanks again!

EDIT:  Was going to ask if you had a donation link, found one in a google docs link in your sig.  Is that the current and best?

Hi,  is it any coincidence this all started happening since your thread today when we got hung up on drag and aerodynamic performance?

If so you might have started using aero forces display (f12) or gone into the debug menu and brought up the aero data gui like you see on most of my screenshots.   There is a bug in 1.2.1 where enabling either of these causes an access violation crash 5-10 minutes later.   The workaround is to disable   "highlight fx" in the graphics options off the game main menu.   I'm amazed such a catastrophic bug hasn't gone more widely reported, just shows how few people actually try to optimise the aerodynamics of their aircraft...

This is good information I was not aware of.  Sorry to interrupt this post, but I too get pretty consistent crashes similar to the original poster, and I do use the F12 aero display as well as have "hightlight fx" enabled.  Thanks for the tip, I will give it a try.

  4. Thanks for the quick update, great to see the flickering fixed!

Do have one question... in 1.2, I could right click and "autostrut to heaviest part" and it was absolutely brilliant, did it to everything and had super solid and stable ships.  Was playing last night with 1.2.1 and now when I right click I no longer have this option.  Was this changed in the patch or have I been doing it wrong all along?

    Thanks!

  5. Not that it helps, but I also have the same problem in the VAB/SPH... drives me nuts.  I'm running the latest 1.2 Windows version in 64 bit.  Screen resolution, full screen, windowed, stock or modded doesn't seem to matter best I can tell.

EDIT:  Decided to spend a few minutes removing somre recently installed mods to see if it helped, and it actually fixed it.  So, not sure which one of these did it, but removing Mk2Expansion, which also removed CommunityResourcePack and InterstellarFuelSwitch fixed the problem.  I now get the reports and mission list as expected, shows up fine in VAB and SPH.

On Saturday, I did a couple of missions.  First one was to establish a space station in Munar orbit capable of accommodating five Kerbals, generating power, and with an antenna.  I was not prepared to build a station there yet (I have not unlocked the parts I want for stations) but all the other requirements could be completed easily enough with a single ship.

So, trying something a little different, I launched this shuttle:

Obviously it has bigger boosters than that to get to orbit, but that was taken as it completed its circularization burn on its transfer stage.  The design proved sufficient to orbit the Mun and return, though I had to use most of the fuel in the shuttle's tanks to do so.

Still, the shuttle had plenty of liquid fuel left for its landing needs, as it only uses a couple of small engines with a dedicated liquid fuel reserve sufficient to keep them going a good while.  I did not want to risk flying all the way back to KSC (I overestimated the number of aerobreaking passes this thing would make before its return becomes terminal) so I brought it to a nice grassy touchdown:

Great little shuttle design, I love it!  Trying to see, what engines are those on the shuttle itself?

    Thanks!

  7. I don't run many mods, mostly stock (actually just "plane mode" that swaps yaw/roll), and have yet to have a crash with 1.0(or .02).... played a good bit recently, several hours at a time, without issue. I'm actually really happy with the current state, and glad they did push the aero and final features in a timely fashion. Very pleased with the game, best version yet by far IMHO. I've never monitored memory usage, have no idea what it is using.

  8. Well, for what it's worth, I'm having this same problem with Joystick Pitch Axis (oddly, roll and yaw recognize fine). The whole selection box just greys out when I try and assign pitch. I could have sworn this worked fine in 1.0.

I've tried my Logitech F710 wireless pad and also my Thrustmaster Warthog/CH Pedals setup.

I also seem to be having the graphics settings reset as well as the ASK me EVERY time if I want to send anonymous game progress to SQUAD. Something is definitely screwy.

Please advise Squad, thanks... would REALLY like to be able to use joysticks or gamepads again.

EDIT: This is with a bone stock, no mods, Steam installed and verified install on Windows 8.1. All controllers I mentioned work fine in Windows and all other games.

  9. FSX is a great choice, and as mentioned make sure you get the Acceleration Pack if you didn\'t get the Gold edition. The flying physics feel great and the visuals are just fine, really nice IMHO. You\'ll love it, and it will help you save both time and money if you ever do pursue real world flying... which I can\'t recommend enough!!! I am a pilot and own a single engine Grumman, and nothing else compares to spending a nice crisp morning punching holes in the sky to both forget stresses and have a ball.

X-plane I REALLY want to like, and have owned all versions since 4, but the flight physics while 'suppose' to be better and modeled on the actual airflow, etc, just have always felt wonky to me... very bouncy and just very unsatisfying.... I do enjoy the failures it models, but Austin (the developer) has yet to get the 'feel' right. Not to mention I can\'t get version 10 to run worth a crap on my system, while every other sim runs great.

Microsoft Flight is dogged a whole lot, and in my opinion that\'s just not justified... I have finally taken the time to actually play with it, and it\'s basically FSX improved in about every way, just limited to currently Hawaii and Alaska scenery and nowhere near the aircraft choices. The warbirds without cockpits are an annoyance to sim fans, but the actual flight model and simulator itself is fantastic. The planes just feel proper and handle as expected, and the 'deluxe' planes that include virtual cockpits are quite frankly fantastic... the RV-6A and Maule especially. I really hope this does well and Microsoft continues to develop this sim.

All of the other mentioned military sims are awesome... the entire DCS series, B-17 2, and IL2-1946.... can\'t go wrong with any of those!

Have fun with your new sim! I\'m sure you\'ll have a ball!
