Landing speed is so fast on Duna due to the thin atmosphere, that it is best to not try land like an aircraft. Simple way to approach this is to make a tailsitter. Parachutes on the nose help land with this configuration. Either that or vertical lifting rockets (ie. a VTOL, through strictly speaking a tailsitter is still VTOL too).

This technology already exists...

CANDU reactors a pretty awesome (though they have a slight positive void coefficient). However they are still a PWR. The real safety benefit of Thorium is the molten-salt reactor design. From what I understand they still need some R&D, but they should be viable. You can also build them to be small or large as needed.

Not all Science Lab threads become heated, only some. From what I see, it's from science topics that adjoin areas that people have strong, emotional and personal views. Views and opinions based on values. These adjoining areas are things like politics, ideologies, economics, culture, sociology and so forth. Prime example here would be Climate Science. It is impossible for that topic to be separated from the political and ideological dimensions.

I agree. All my incidences have been at very high velocity hitting Laythe head on, directly from solar orbit. With docked craft, and CoM the wrong end. It's not easy to botch a re-entry in stock but it can happen.

Coastal based multi-purpose nuclear reactors. Uranium/MOX/Thorium fuel based, whatever. Run them continuously at full power. Put electricity into the grid as needed, with anything left over used to pull hydrogen out of the seawater. In places that need it, add a desalination module. Then take the hydrogen and some CO2 out of the air and make methane with some chemistry magic.

Take the plot from "2001 A Space Odyssey" and the sequel "2010", then squish them back-to-back into a quirky KSP parody movie. It would be like the live action movies but with... * Funnies * Screaming Kerbals * Things frequently going wrong * Explosions Imagine two Kerbals dealing with Hal? Or the EVA transfers in 2010!

There has been discussion about this before. Personally i'm with NovaSilisko on this one. Since it's a more elegant way of thinking about the Kerbol system/universe. It also solves the obvious questions that arise, such as how do Kerbals get such light material to build rockets from a massively dense planet. And yeah, yeah - I know it's just a game and does not matter. However for internal consistency it would be good to have this settled for v1.0 in a proper way.

At this stage unmanned is more cost effective, since it's the only real practical way with current technology. Humans can bring a lot to the table, not just in terms of hands-on science, but in monitoring and fixing systems and more. However the additional cost is orders of magnitude... then there's the human factors, and risks. Imagine a manned Cassini–Huygens mission?! Billions in cost and possibly ending in tragedy. Also there is more than science to space exploration too. The objective of the Apollo moon missions was "landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth". Though, smartly, NASA decided that while they were there that they should collect some rocks and do some SCIENCE.

I seem to be one of the few who build practical one piece stations. Less parts, more rigid.
