  1. Not to hype it up too much, but a self improving AI is the nuclear bomb of the information age. It's called an Intelligence Explosion, or Hard Takeoff AI. I recommend the book Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom, although that's more about design strategies for a safe AI than "what does it take to make an AI?". Consciousness is a Hard Problem.
  2. Step 1: ya send ya steampunk gents into spess Step 2: make sure ya spaceship has lots of brass, portholes, burnished dark woods, british flags (v. important) Step 3: leave your obsession with realism on earth, you are in steampunk land now
  3. Even now, when the people who grew up with windows PCs are having children, kids can figure it out much faster. My parents grew up without even VCR's, so I cant blame them for being outsmarted (I once locked them out of the news channels on the cable box). Partly because kids have more to lose, partly because (assumption warning) anyone who tries to use parental controls is A) probably not very technically smart anyway and has the wrong outlook on parenting. Also that software usually sucks balls, made by shovelware devs.
  4. This is precisely a strike, it's a form of protest that poses disruption to users and managers. That's the point. Always side against the managers and with strikers. If all the retail outlets in a city shut down for a day, that's a hell of a powerful protest and implies the thing the workers are protesting against is pretty bad. So instead of complaining that the shop is closed, you'd be better off siding with the workers and directing the anger at their management for causing the strike in the first place.
  5. Per resource cost, T1 units are supposed to be still useful against T2 units, or at least that was the design style they were going for a lá TA. It's not supposed to be a straight upgrade.

    Apollo 18

I liked it, yeah. I don't think your average horror fan would like it as much, but as someone with a weakness for Space Stuff, I really liked it. Great consistent and authentic apollo "found footage" throughout, and it was cool to see the LK on the moon. I bet there was almost the same split between CG and physical effects as in Moon (2009). iirc one of the trailers basically spoiled the film for me but I saw it anyway. I'd rate it on-par with Europa Report, but they are quite different.
  7. The forums have always been a pretty tense place. KSP is good, but only because its the only game of its kind. Kind of thing that could really benefit from a clone.
  8. It's pretty sweet. I played a tiny bit of arma 1, then arma 2 came along and made things much more accessible, and arma 3 made it even more accessible. Takes a hell of a machine to run, though.
  9. Since you're asking for this advice on the KSP forum, I assume you're a terrorist and I advise you to not wear a gas mask, heat up the benzene and give it a really good sniff.
  10. It's possible now, with a mod, and Unity comes with an oculus plugin so official support shouldn't be difficult. However, as the game stands, the flow of gameplay, most IVA's, and the UI are not designed for VR so I don't think it would be very comfortable beyond a curiosity. Definitely something to consider when planning the inevitable sequel.
  11. 10/10, excellent thread, people will be referencing it for years
  12. Niche sims have always been around, but I guess the recent increase in graphical quality helped them get into the mainstream. It's not a fad, it's just a new genre, like walking simulators.
  13. It's kind of inevitable, yeah, but it's nice to have a non-military game. Although I'd kill for a physics based shooty game similar to KSP.
  14. Well, I've got some buildings* read to plop on a hex base when things get moving, but no rush *one. one building. two if you count the naff portakabin I made. more to follow though
  15. That is probably too high poly, yeah. when you've got less polys, smooth shading turned on and it's textured you won't be able to tell that there are less polys. Although polys don't matter a huge amount for ksp performance, so i'm told. When placing your seams, a little bit of stretch is acceptable, don't worry about it being perfect. I hate doing UV's but it's something that has to be done. Given the way KSP handles crafts, you'll want to split it up into (probably) nose as the command pod, cargo bay/fuel, engine, wings and control surfaces, and that means modelling the flat end caps that interface these parts For the cargo bay, at least in blender, you'll want to separate the door geometry then model the inside by extruding the edge down inside. I am only a blender novice but that's how I would do it. That last step was just, with the inside edges selected, extrude then create face. It's definitely recognisable as the X-37 shape, keep up the good work
  16. In real life this building is a telephone exchange, but I thought I'd make it a bank, since presumably kerbucks are stored somewhere. Obviously, it's not meant to go at KSC, I was just comparing it side-by-side with the existing buildings to check scale and texel density. Ugly brutalist buildings have very simple shapes and are ideal for a blender novice like myself. I will try and make some vaguely matching and complementary additions and try for a little kerbal town or something.
  17. We've already sent a lander to titan, numbnuts. Europa is unexplored territory. Re mission dV costs, for such an ambitious mission, why not assemble the mission in space in multiple launches? afaik this has never been done for an unmanned science mission.
  18. I can't believe how much progress you've made since that first release! When I get around to actually playing KSP instead of thinking about it/talking about it/modding it this will be the first mod I install.
  19. I don't agree. My main objection is that pre-release games should not be touted and sold like finished products are, and I suspect KSP will end up with more sales pre-gold than post-gold, ceteris paribus.
  20. 2017 is about twenty years away in terms of how fast the indie scene moves. It's like when some movie exec suits greenlit a grumpy cat movie, considering A) grumpy cat was never funny, by the time movie execs had heard of grumpy cat it had gone from "reddit users post meme" to "your grandmother is emailing you 8x compressed grumpy cat jpegs with 4 different logos on" and C) by the time the movie comes out even your grandmother thinks grumpy cat isn't funny anymore. It's like if they released a spyro the dragon movie now, except nobody is nostalgic for the days when grumpy cat was funny.
  21. I made a portakabin for an industrial site, may I submit the site for inclusion when I've finished it?
  22. KSP was designed and built as a game where you stack (a limited selection of stock) rocket parts in stages. Planes are a kludgy afterthought. Dealing with 20 times the assets that squad made wasn't even considered.
  23. I think it's a shame it's the only game in this genre, but it's not bad
  24. The blu-ray just arrived in the post, I have a feeling I might be downloading this mod soon.

You would think a forum of space fans would be a bit more skeptical towards category 5 woo, but I guess there's always exceptions.
