Soviet closed cycle engines NK-33 +Light, easy to manufacture, cheap, reliable so far -No gimbal RD-170/RD-171/RD-180/RD-191 +Gimbal, a little higher ISP/thrust per chamber than latest NK-33 modifications but... -Much havier than NK-33, hard to manufacture, expensive, not so reliable (though, as far as I know, engines failed due to manufacturing errors) RD-0120 +Comparable peformance specifications to RS-25, easy to manufacture -Bigger and heavier than RS-25 Also, I don't understand why they didn't develop a new 4-chamber engine based on NK-33 instead of RD-170, as well as why Glushko called NK-33 "rotten".

Are developers going to post a feature list for .24? -
Flight Simulator X/Space Orbiter/X-plane 10 Pictures
Shuttle replied to JJJacksonTyler's topic in The Lounge
I don't want to start a holywar but which simulator has a better (more detailed) physical model? FSX, FlightGear, X-Plane all seem to have quite advanced physics. Here is russian Tupolev Tu-154M Take off: http://i.imgur.com/Fhsvg2x.jpg Cockpit: http://i.imgur.com/I13nQUK.jpg Another screenshot in flight: http://i.imgur.com/msnAPwU.jpg All the pics are not mine. -
Was the Space Shuttle an inherently bad idea?
Shuttle replied to dlrk's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Yes, the article says this vehicle used soft landing engines to drop vertical speed and ski gear to drop horizontal speed. -
The Engines That Came In From The Cold
Shuttle replied to turbo917k's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Yeah, it is a very good documentary movie, made me feel so proud of my country. I really like Mishin's answer at 21:44: "Nu chto, ploho sebya chuvstvoval?/Of course I felt bad. Do you think you would feel good if your engine blew up with a thrust of 4.5 thousand tons?" I also made a gif with Korolev from this video:) -
Was the Space Shuttle an inherently bad idea?
Shuttle replied to dlrk's topic in Science & Spaceflight
According to the link above, it was it was supposed to be Soyuz successor: The ship is put into orbit by a powerful rocket (initially from the N1 family, after Glushko's assignment - RLA-130V), carrying modules (blocks) for the assembly of the big space station. -

Nibb31 Description says (I couldn't find any english description) it could put 30 tons into orbit and bring 20 tons back to Earth. Dry mass 80 tons, mass after separation from launch vehicle 88 tons, 800-km cross range capability. -
(Relatively) Good Gaming computer for under 1000$
Shuttle replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
KSP uses only one core so you need a processor with good performance per core. Like ZetaX said, http://www.anandtech.com/show/6396/the-vishera-review-amd-fx8350-fx8320-fx6300-and-fx4300-tested/2 So, I would choose 4-core Intel Haswell + mid-range motherboard for ~$100-150 for overclocking + good cooler. Unfortunately, I can't recommend any models because I am still using 2300 - it seems to be more than enough for all games -

I tried to find shuttle alternatives and that's what I found: .gif with different configurations: http://i.imgur.com/028Wo3s.gif (launch configuration - wings retracted, descent configuration - wings deployed, landing configuration - landing gear deployed. Landing on parachutes: http://i.imgur.com/PwHKK69.jpg (Who will say KSP is unrealistic?!) That's ÃωÃÅ¡-Òß (russian letters) -
thunderstar I wanted to make a gif with N1 Here is the best Energia launch video I could find: http://youtu.be/zx1w2dNfs1w?t=1m4s "Vkluchayu dvigateli A(?). Kontakt podyema" - "Turning on engines. Lift off contact" I was looking for N1 footage and found an interview with Glushko's sun. He looks a lot like his father.

Hm, I'll make a similar gif

This question has already been discussed in other threads http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/63633-soyuz-the-underappreciated-workhorse As far as I understand, Soyuz is an excellent cheap and reliable space taxi that is able to put 3 men into orbit. Shuttle is much more expensive but it also has many unique features such as an ability to bring back large cargo from orbit, robotic arm, big cargo bay that allows to carry out scientific experiments. However, if you don't use those capabilities, shuttle turns into an extremely expensive space truck.

As far as I know, N1 blew up 3 of 4 times because NK-15 had an unreliable turbopump that was completely redone in NK-33. I didn't read much about Merlin but I guess it is very well-tested and reliable engine so comparison with N1 is not correct

Does anyone remember cancelled game "Project Milo"
Shuttle replied to Pawelk198604's topic in The Lounge
Well, it seems to me that the only way to make shown gameplay mechanics work is to create an AI, otherwise the game would turn into a bunch of scripted repetitive dialogs/reactions. Also, I doubt Milo demo was real-time - I think it was CG video without any real-time processing. -
I think it is not worth creating a new thread but Mother Russia has just launched Soyuz 2.1v with NK-33 on the first stage! http://www.1tv.ru/news/techno/249348

If Shuttle is that cheap and reliable, why did NASA stop using it? Great post, by the way!

I like such holywar threads but I didn't expect this thread will start to deliver so quickly: All my acquaintances in Russia seem to be enjoying what American Capitalism brought us: GPS, movies, music, electronics, clothes, planes, etc. I haven't met anyone who still thinks in terms of capitalists and communists. Also, russians (at least the ones I talked to) like to critisize our country! You will be surprised but Europe and America are VERY often treated as much better places for living than Russia, especially among younger people. Exactly. However, I doubt anyone in Russia except for geeks knows what Energia and Polus is. Not to mention Almaz, Zond, Molniya, etc. Well, as far as I understand Soviet leaders treated Shuttle as a threat to Soviet Union so they wanted to make sure they have a similar weapon to counter it. From what I've read, soviets didn't like the system, at least Glushko. He actually thought shuttle was a very bad idea (as a cheap space truck). What about "not safer", Buran completed one unmanned spaceflight so I guess it would be possible to send it to ISS unmanned at least for cargo missions. And don't forget it had ejection seats for two pilots. However, Buran lost a piece of its heat protection in orbit, I even had a video bookmarked somewhere. If the richest country in the world has to shut down shuttle because it was too expensive then it must be a very bad every-day space truck.

I couldn't even wait for the RAPIER engines
Shuttle replied to CalculusWarrior's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I am planning to build my first SSTO that can lift 10 tons to orbit. I've already run out of space for another pair of rocket engines so RAPIERs will definetely help I would call it "relatively short" -
What time exactly will .23 launch on December 17th?
Shuttle replied to Rizendell's topic in KSP1 Discussion
It is Monday, 20:57 pm in Moscow right now, it would be great if the game was released at midnight in every time zone
