  1. The arguments about global cooling was debunked years ago obviously enough, that it was a scare 50 years ago about a risk for a coming ice age is also well published. Remember reading about it then I was a kid in old magazines. Yes this was probably mostly an media issue, some scientists come up with some scary news, media love bad news as it sells papers, the scientists got a lot of publicity. issue died down then the next scare fad pops up, still its intetesting that it came up during decade where it got colder.
  2. Think locations are unlocked in order, you get Mun, then Minmus and then Duna and Eve, followed by jool with the outermost moons first. Followed by Dress, Eeloo and Moho, however I guess high reputation increase the chance of the high payoff missions.
  3. However an large ship tend to have an command module and a hitchhiker module anyway. The problem is that you can not store data from material labs and goo containers and reuse them. You can only transmit while connected or docked to lab for an small increase in science. If you could dock your lander to mothership with lab, then gather the data and restore the material and goo modules for reuse the lab would be useful for Mun and Jool missions at least. As its now Its pretty wasted except as a cool part.
  4. Yes, KAC is pretty much a must, more so if you have lots of missions going on at once.
  5. I have used time warp to get rid of stuck parts, I have also managed to warp trought Eve. I was aproaching on maximum warp and was distracted while on an impact trajectory, was a bit suprised then I had past Eve.
  6. Understand, however as I see it it would be better with an separate stage for this.
  7. So large compared to the Apollo one. Why so much larger, even with more landing option an three man crew I don't see why they need a landing stage more than 5 times the Apollo one.
  8. Usually you can just use it as a single stage to orbit with no payload except probe, reaction wheel and parachutes. Take it up to an obit between 70 and 80 km, right click on engine to run test. Then land it afterwards. This is true for most stuff, only exception is srb, parachutes and decoplers who has to be staged,
  9. Did not call it an reusable fairing, it was a space shuttle like SPS but without reuseable main engines. However putting the engines on the rocket would make it far easier to use the rocket as an heavy lifter, i was some talk about doing this for the SLS too but it was never done and would be harder. Not know if putting the engines on the rocket was done for this reason or because they had problems making reusable ones.
  10. Attitude cuttoff is far harder to do than speed, 250 mph is faster than cars and small planes goes. Attitude is a bit harder to simply put an lock on as your gps don't know your attitude above ground, you can be at 4000 meter in the mountain lots of places so guess its higher.
  11. One major cool thing in Ringworld was how humanoids took the big scavenger role. But yes insects would adapt far faster, we can eve measure insect adaptability during history. Would be smarter to introduce versions who did not caused all the problems, an mosquito who did not like humans would close the niche. Weeds is other plants growing in a mono culture, its nothing you can leave out as you like them other places. You don't want monocultures as they can easy been taken out by diseases, yes monocultures make lots of sense economically.
  12. Liked how the artist got the gender difference on the lions (and elephants) right, Noah should have gone for the one pigeon solution who is shown (all statues the last 2500 years agree with me) More seriously, yes the genesis probes is a standard payload to launch against suitable planets who could support life but don't have decent with oxygen in the atmosphere. Payload is an mix of bacteria who is dispersed over huge areas. Real teraforming is different, it involves introducing species over time, you want plenty of grass and good soil before introducing grass eating animals, then they are common you introduce predators. An slow process it has never been any problems getting the required stocks even for outlying systems.
  13. Probably not however if you are not able to be friendly with either US, Russia or China you have serious problem and need to be taken out hard as in the Islamic state who the US, Russia, Iran and the Saudis agree on. On the other hand India is an major player and might not want to cut deals, an limited navigation system might work well with an launcher test program.
  14. Please give us back the windows 2000 search, I want to be able to search all *.aspx files containing minimizetree( Server does not have visual studio installed.
  15. Well I'm IT responsible in the company I work in and after a day I had a strict WIndows 8 policy, reformat to Windows 7. One hour support from me is more expensive than a Win 7 ultimate license, support is just an side task for me I have more important stuff to do. If we could start sending invoices for support cost to Microsoft I might consider it, but only if we had lack of projects, we rather have an lack of people. If MS want to have a cool interface with lots of design flaws its their problems (note earlier post about win 8 fails) not the customers, UI of win 7 works pretty smoothly, yes they need another UI for cell phones and tablets and yes Win 8 would have major issues in a decent tablet (x86 version) decent chance the default pc will become an ultrabook who can be turned into an tablet. I also have a cool idea, If the elevators accelerated or braked with 2g and spend the rest of the time in freefall it would save time and make elevator rides more fun.
  16. They was pretty different in design, main diference was that buran was just a upper stage on a huge rocket, the main engines was not reused. This would making an 70 ton to LEO rocket easier, yes you still needed an giant faring and an small upper stage system. Should have making an space station cheaper as you would do cargo launch, then a buran launch for assembly.
  17. Crashed an huge upper stage into VAB back in 0.35 was pretty cool as the crew cabin was separated and landing on top of vab after the +100 ton stage hit it. Hit the control tower a couple of times but this was during spaceplane testing who would be simulation, unlike rockets who I know will reach orbit unless something goes wrong spaceplanes require an long testing phase who end it regular test flight to find the cruise mode to get to orbital speed.
  18. Think its was the light who made it soo visible, the forward and right burns was catching lots of sunlight. If you looks carefully you see one burn in our direction too and it might be on the the left a couple of times.
  19. Its usually listed for most rockets at least to LEO and GEO, however it depend a lot of the design. Ariane has an much higher GEO versus LEO ratio than falcon 9 because its uses H2+O2 in upper stage and have an small upper stage and boosters rather than two stages and a larger second stage like falcon 9.
  20. This should affect the orth cloud object far more than the inner planets. Some speculations that the 60 million year interval between major mass extinctions might be related to this as it causes more comets. The late heavy bombardment is visible on moon, it happened some hundred years after earth was formed and is belived to be an disturbance in the cuppier belt probably because Neptun was stabilizing in orbit, might also be an larger planet getting ejected. Nothing even close to it later.
  21. This, remember that the majority if pc users has some skills, they are not superusers but neither novices who have problems handling a mouse. More importantly they are not very interested in computers but has learned the skills they need over they years. usually they have no problems installing software but don't like it at least things who looks complex, no problems copying files to memory sticks or mailing them and other everyday skills. Now give them a new UI and they don't understand anything, an superuser will try things and find that works and that not pretty fast but not the majority so they hate it. They will start asking for help often, this causes internal support to hate it too. Windows 8 might be easer for the total novices however they are a far smaller group and rarely do anything on an computer except starting the 2-3 programs they are trained in using. And yes Microsoft did a lots of idiot design errors in Windows 8, some was insane. No folder support on the start screen, probably my favorite, if you install office it contains lots of small utility programs for special use, same with sql server, now all of this end up on the start screen cluttering it a lot, yes its include office and sql server 2012 who is designed for 8. Other stuff like moving small utility apps in windows to another place than the start screen, mini apps who have to run full screen on your 27" monitor and more. Note that all of this is mistakes not related to touch, just related to that windows 8 looks to use lots of features who would fit better on an cell phone than a pc.
  22. The reason is that everybody have learned its a planet so why should it be demoted, nobody remember that Ceres was one so its not very relevant. I agree that the size difference between Pluto and Mercury/ Mars is misleading. And yes I know the real reason, we have found many dwarf planets in the cupier belt and will find lots more, why should only Pluto be included in the public lists? It would end up calling the current 8+ pluto + perhaps 1 other the major planets and the +200 other for planets. Probably part of the problem with Ceres back in the 19th century, they found it, then they start finding lots of asteroids, where to put the bar, they decided to exclude it but could just have included as the next one on list is far smaller but they did not know.
  23. The novel part it the way they bend the light, however its just fancy optic. I kind of doubt metamaterials will work well as an practical cloaking device either, stealth as in non reflective is pretty easy. looking transparent is far harder. Adaptive camouflage as in changing color to match background would work most of the time
  24. Any smaller outer system bodies would get a tail if put in earth orbit at least unless mars sized or larger as the cold let it freeze gas who would escape. Then I thought that putting anything other than rocks very close would give this results, has some hot Jupiters with tails. And the cute picture is a cartoon and uses cartoon sizes, a cat in a cartoon is larger than an mouse but not 8 time larger.
  25. So would anything if put close enough http://themhpe.deviantart.com/art/Poor-Pluto-55646689
