  1. Grats Suzaku, nice mission run and impressive control on the landing. Definitely deserving of an advanced pilot precision award. Since you gave us two videos and made a special request you can keep your gate crasher entry as per your request as well as be named on the guest list roll of honour. bsalis, great looking spaceplane and nice images, thanks for your report. I just want to check with you that you are claiming a completed mission before adding your entry to the honours list and that your orbit periapsis therefore rose above the 36km which is evident in the mechjeb readout of your "Rocket Action" screeny, to some value exceeding 70km ? This is because the game will declare the craft is in orbit when it is in the atmosphere, so I cannot be completely certain which definition of "orbit" you are using in you spoiler tag "In Orbit". Your word is good enough as I have said to others, you simply need to utter it. Its just that the screenies are not completely self-evident and you have not explicitly said you completed the mission, so it would be wrong of me to assume you meant to but didnt, if you see what I mean, seeing as near misses are a way of life on the Kerbal Space Program!
  2. Sorry for not updating earlier, my cold became bronchitis and I feel like someone used my chest for a launchpad, but I am feeling a bit better today. As for the rocket throttle glitch I dont think it should be looked on as a cheat. Its in the game, hasnt been patched and its almost impossible not to use it so IMHO its perfectly OK to use it and allowance has been made for the advantage it brings by creating a separate honours list for this version. In fact I would encourage players to understand and exploit it to the fullness of their ability because in v17 it will be gone so we may as well have some fun with it while it is here. I dont think the fuel use and thrust to mass ratios of rockets are properly balanced for 100% throttle anyway in v16 and will need rebalancing when the bug is removed so really its not as if the bug is breaking an otherwise realistic computer model IMHO, meanwhile I have made some weird ships fly exploiting this bug. Business as usual for v17 I hope. Suzaku, I am looking forward to your video of your interstellar SSTO. I like the South Kerbalandium K-15 Recordbreaker launch mechanism a lot but unfortunately the rule about horizontal take off is definitely broken if that is the way you took off for the challenge. My keen eye and penchant for Sherlock Holmes stories leads me to the inescapable deduction that this was how it took off Since the landing struts are extended and the ship is over the start of the runway just after liftoff !! So you have been awarded a place on the gatecrashers (rule breakers) list, for now! However that will change when I see your video including successful landing and all your past nefarious activities will be forgiven and forgotten... (I hope you find that acceptable and that all readers understand the light humour and friendly intent with which this award is given). Guard13007, thanks for your screens and entertaining video of your innovatively constructed SSTO spaceplane. You definitely fulfilled the challenge and passed the test with flying colours, landing with great skill on a difficult terrain in the dark. So you undoubtedly deserve a place on the roll of honour aka the guest list.
  3. OK thanks to spazzkey, gyroscope and suzaku for some interesting screenies and mission attempt reports. I went through them with interest and have been trying to work out which ones were successful missions and which were failed mission attempts. I am having a hard time because I have a wretched summer cold which I am not enjoying, messing with my head. I feel it might help to clarify a rule here FYI, the orbit must be totally outside the atmosphere ie both PE and AP above 70,000m. I cant tell if all these reports fulfill the mission requirements or not. So as we are on the honour system I was hoping you would tell me. Spazzkey, Hades looks like a good flyer and MkII landed well, shame about the MkIII engine loss, it has happened to some of mine too. Did MkII orbit with a PE over 70Km? I am happy to take your word for it, just the orbit screeny for MkII at that point in the mission shows a PE which looks a little lower than 70Km. gyroscope your supermini apogee shot is more crucial and I am being more critical because I am checking to see if it qualifies for the unofficial minimalist record (suspended in v16 due to the throttle bug but unofficially attributed in very small writing!) and because of the fine fuel margins you were running it is hard to tell. Did you get the full orbit with PE over 70Km before landing because the speed / altitude in you screeny is suborbital. 'arrow' looks like its name and you said it was ssto which the screenies show, did you manage to land it in one piece as well ?! If so it deserves another entry on the roll to go with your previous. suzaku, you asked if I would believe you and I would. But before I log a mission on the honour roll I need to know what happened and the name of the vessel and whether you claim kudos for any achievements. I feel its right to require proof of achievements which are competitive ie records but as I say we are on the honour system. (If anyone wants to be on the roll bad enough to tell a porkie then they can be on it if it makes them feel better.) I am gathering you had some success with a 3 Kerbal ship, so well done for that. Your word is enough but to put it on the honour roll it would help if you can check the mission fulfilled the main rules, name the vessel and specify your achievements. I am guessing from the X-15 results screeny that it didnt make orbit as the top speed over land was not high enough to make orbit and it clearly went up then down again, but it is a very unusual craft design especially the landing gear. Also by your own account the Kerborca's landing wasnt pretty so I am not sure if that is the 3 Kerbal craft which made the whole mission or not. nightynight all
  4. Congratulations gyroscope for success with the Mig, duly recorded on the roll of honour and the Bat too (did that get back OK?)
  5. These are the rules for inclusion on the official honours list and invite to the party, but if you achieve some kind of orbit and landing by breaking the rules you can be recognised as a gate crasher and placed on the bouncers watch list. ;D
  6. Yes sorry MaxKSP, all the fuss over the transition has confused me, congrats on getting your design to work in v16. I also missed Tarmenius' recent well illustrated and successful free return mission report somehow, but you are both on the honours list now and you even have links which work. If I have missed anyone else please say so.
  7. Congratulations to martscht for your achievement and on getting back to KSC terrain and landing in one piece, your place on the honours list is well deserved. I didnt want to give an impression of disapproval for v 0.16 it just has a big balance change which means that it doesnt have consistency with the previous balance nor is it a realistic model, however you can get quite a lot of fun out of exploiting it with massive thrust to weight ratios ^.^ (which you did not do I hasten to add). And hebdomad, congratulations on improving on your previous feat and making a nifty video to report it with some nice touches. I hope you dont mind that I gave your KosmoKerbal Commendation diminutive text for v16 as it is a fuel dependant achievement (we lost strikethrough). The BB transition has also broken all the links in the first post and added characters to the text. I am waiting for aLeXmOrA to complete his work before repairing it in case he solves some of the problems in the process. Unfortunately unless you get mod access hebdomad there is no way to share admin on the same list, it has to be one or t'other. I am happy to carry on if people are happy with the challenge as it is. My questions stemmed from the fact that some people wanted to have other tasks included like payload delivery. I thought that because it conflicted with the no decoupling rule that it deserved to be a seperate challenge thread which someone else could look after but I didnt want to impose that view if others disagree. However it strikes me that there is scope for a sister thread to the K Prize for more advanced spaceplane related challenges eg dropping a satellite or fuel dump into various orbits, which would leave the K Prize a well defined, easy to understand challenge, which I hope will encourage new players to have a go... point being hebdomad could start a payload thread and I can carry on with this one.
  8. If you really want to meet the Kraken *shudders with fear* then make your orbiter craft radially complex ie have stacks outside the main stack @3x symmetry or more. The single stack ships are much less affected by it. Then go into Kerbol orbit some distance from Kerbin about two or three times its SOI radius and then try to get back to Kerbin ie try switching ASAS off and manoevuring the craft with non-prograde burns. Personally I have never been entirely convinced about the speed issue as you can encounter it in low Kerbin and even very low Münar orbit.
  9. well you need to get the decoupler in the middle of the long boosters or they tumble and the end clips the vehicle
  10. My own experience is that the new radials work fine with the new parts as long as the stack is short and simple and a strategic strut here and there can help prevent wobble. You usually need two sets of struts, a single radial brace per radial stack as far as possible along the stack from the decoupler and one circumferential brace per stack around the outside between stacks to prevent wobble. Point of attachment further out is more stable for these ie around the outside of the craft. Getting these struts absolutely symmetrical and for circumferential struts horizontal, prevents rocket spin and can be achieved using the snap to system by placing a reference strut on the snap-to line at the destination point before you place the actual reinforcing strut starting at the snap-to line at the origin point. Then remove the reference strut. If you use the textures to measure vertical displacement you can achieve near perfect symmetry. If you try to edit the struts' XYZ (angle) values in the craft file you can sometimes win out, since the struts seem to be drawn from a starting location at an angle and raytraced to the destination where they attach themselves. But this only works for very small adjustments eg making them absolutely horizontal, more often than not adjusting angles breaks the craft file. Though adjusting decoupler and tank heights works pretty reliably which can help with multi-radial designs. To be honest its a bit too fussy the way it is but it looks like the Squad crew are working on it so I hope these tips will help in the meantime. IMHO snap-to option on the destination placement would help a lot, oh and a vertical snap-to would help too. And kerbals do die on contact with the big tanks, the only way round that I know of is to give them ladders.
  11. There are some bug reports on this. One suggests this... Another suggests this... To which C7 replied with some interesting info... So I think what you are seeing is real and people are discussing it in the bugs forum.
  12. Congratulations to emkej and Mac <s>Azzameen</s> Kerman for completing the challenge with X Wing 9000 welcome to the honours list, your invitation to the party is in the post. Has to be said that v0.16 has thrown us a curve with the square of the fractional throttle setting bug. There is no doubt it can make your fuel stretch about 100x further than it should but that requires a low throttle setting. It makes the whole challenge much easier if you can get into space, but doing that tends to require high throttle settings. So I think people who have had a go at the challenge in good faith deserve a mention on the honours list, just like those who tried and failed get a mention, especially if they show piloting skill unrelated to fuel like emkej. But I think it makes sense to keep 0.16 honours separate and also suspend fuel critical prizes like maximalist and minimalist, then start a new part of the list for 0.16.1 if it ever happens. Hebdomad if you wanted to start a whole new challenge thread for 0.16.1 feel free, I have no objection. I think the K prize is bigger than one administrator. I would agree with quoting the 0.15/0.16 honours list, perhaps in a spoiler, to keep it complete and neat. Otherwise I will keep this one going and make a new section for the new version. Your call, anyone else have an opnion feel free to chip in.
  13. Kerbals Desson, Greglin and Anger went to explore the Mün arch. Each flew to the top of the arch using EVA thrusters, but Desson was keen to show off his skills and tried to fly through the arch when to the horror of Greglin and Anger he disappeared in a cloud of dust, never to be seen again. Anger was a seasoned astronaut having made his name piloting a capsule retrieval ship on a previous mission, single handedly rescuing a 3 Kerbal capsule which had all but run out of fuel from the surface of the Mün. However on this occasion his bravado deserted him and traumatised by the incident of Desson\'s demise, Anger Kerman flew erratically as the two survivors attempted to leave the Mün and return to Kerbin. The resulting eccentric orbit put the command vessel on a collision course with the Mun and out of rocket fuel the two Kerbals had no choice but to abandon ship and use their EVA packs to boost themselves into a safe and almost identical orbits. Bob Kerman volunteered to pilot the rescue vehicle which left its two copilots behind in order to make room for the two unhappy casteaways. He approached the Mün and with great skill matched the orbits of Greglin and Anger who one by one approached the rescue ship with their remaining EVA thruster fuel and boarded the vessel without further incident. Bob then set course for KSC launch facillity and landed close by the gantry where the three were greeted by those they had left behind, happy to be reunited with their own kind but sad for the inexplicable loss of Desson.
  14. I tried to EVA a Kerbal through the middle and though it had plenty of space all around the Kerbal disappeared in a cloud of dust as it crossed the middle. Not sure if it was due to an oversize/mismatched collision mesh or something specific to Kerbals. RIP Desson Kerman.
  15. Any will do, I think Kerbals must regenerate like flatworms and salamanders. Which raises the possibility there are several Jebs...
  16. Just had to show this one which turned out particularly nicely, my first v16 Mün mission with Jeb himself.
  17. Yes Shadownailshot if you want to post those then I will be happy to link them on the v15 honours list. Sean Mirrsen, congrats on making the first v16 entry and getting so close to the objective. I think that your mission definitely deserves a Pilot Proficiency Medal because you got your behemoth to KSC terrain. Landing on the runway is particularly tricky so while taxiiing is effective and definitely proficient IMHO it does not demonstrate advanced precision. I hope you agree. I am sure you can do it if you set your mind to it so I hope you will take that into consideration in your next mission and will be glad to see you achieve that. I can however award you the v16 maximalist record...! Congrats also to CanuckOverlord who completed the v16 mission with flying colours and the smallest v16 craft to date, welcome to the party! (I am assuming that landing was not on KSC terrain though it did look very flat so say if it was.)

  19. v16 balance has changed quite a bit. There are various options and I want to consult stakeholder opinion in the K prize challenge. One option is to make a new challenge thread at which point whoever wants to adminster that can do so and I would take a back seat and make space planes. Another option is to continue this thread and make a v16 section on the honours list. A third option is a bit of both, since hebdomad has the second post on the thread, he could turn that post into a separate v16 honours list and take over admin of the challenge thread that way and add the 3 Kerbals prize. I could put the first post into a quote box with v15 at the top and refer readers to the second post for v16. Comments please.
  20. Kerbals trying out their new rockets to see if they will help resolve major existential dilemmas discovered that 'hey Ma look at me!' is as good a reason as any to visit new planets.
  21. An aerospike would likely be more effective as it has the same VacIsp but is a quarter of the weight and a higher max thrust. However in the campaign the aerospike will probably be an advanced part which will require quite a bit of research to unlock.
  22. Does the config file tally with in game parameters? ( Cant get to the game right now... ) I have also been scratching my head about this engine, its one redeeming feature is that it is fairly cheap. According to the part config file VacISP is 390 which is also pretty good, though I dont remember it looking that good in game. But it is second only to the smaller 1m version and its much cheaper to use one of those than it is to use 7 of the smaller variant for equivalent thrust. Cost 1x 3m = 600 Cost 7x 1m = 7x 750 = 5250 !! EDIT I think the big question is whether being twice the weight of the LV-T30 means that the efficiency savings of a 390 as opposed to a 370 VacISP are really worth it... maybe you could do better with a T30 as you will need big lander legs anyway.
  23. Did you make an intact landing there zekes? Congrats on getting the shuttle down G Addict, assuming that is KSC terrain then you qualify for a pilot proficiency medal to go with the previous success with the KiG Spaceplane Mk2c.
  24. OK here are mine. There are five so far, newest at the top. Three with music. Two shots from Kerbin to the Mün and back by the same rocket. Launching a big stock space station into orbit around the Mün. Kerbol star orbit and back to Kerbin with a little ship. Two without music. Capsule retrieval from Münar orbit. Early days mission to the Mün and back to Kerbin.
  25. I have got some catching up to do. So Australian Sloth did you complete the challenge? You can land in water and still succeed as long as nothing breaks off, though that is a difficulty. Your craft looks great btw dont listen to Kay. Congratulations to MaxKSP on completing the challenge mission and additional objectives, duely added to the roll of honour aka the guest list. Yours is the honour of the Altitudinalist Record since you went to orbit with PE 83,440,130m which beat pushingrobot\'s Sawfish at PE 83,324,638m.
