  1. An SAS part does not exist anymore. Your talking about reaction wheels and YES it does matter where you place them. Reaction wheels near the center of mass are a total waste unless its a small craft. For large craft I place reaction wheels as far from the center of mass as possible. It's a leverage issue. I put a wheel at the very bottom in between an engine and fuel tank and then at the top on the command pod. Now these pods have their own torque, but its too minuscule for large craft. So I disable it to save electricity. Unfortunately the stock reaction wheels do not come with enough variety ( there's what..two? ) So I use NovaPunch wheels. There low profile and there's one for every size up to 5m. On REALLY big craft I double up reaction wheels and pack on a lot of batteries. I love these wheels. Rcs is damn near obsolete. I only use Rcs for docking and to fine tune orbits now. So all in all treat reaction wheel placement just as you would rcs placement. ( balance wise ) I will add to what I said. The center of mass is not always in the center. If for instance you have a large, full fuel tank at the bottom. The CoM will be lower. Therefore placing reaction wheels at the bottom will be a waste and might actually hurt you. So instead place the RW's at the top and the craft will be more responsive. Again. As far away from the CoM as possible. That CoM is your fulcrum. So let's say you have to flip over a large rock. You have a five foot pole and a ten foot pole. Which one will flip the rock more easily?
  2. Treat yourself to Engineering Redux. It's something no one should go with out.
  3. Can someone tell me if NASA subbed out the dive team that recovered the SRB's from the ocean? If so then I imagine that had to make for a huge dent in NASA's wallet. Offshore recovery is one of the most cost demanding operations out there. Not to mention..how long do these boosters sit in that salt water before there pulled out? Going through and cleaning those things again can't help the financial situation. Then on top of that those SRBs have to be repacked with solid fuel which is very dangerous. They should've been doing what spaceX has been working on. Not to that extent maybe, but atleast have the SRB's land on the ground. All in all the shuttle did its job, but I think we can all say it could've been done better.
  4. How long would you guys say before we see a 64bit version in KSP for windows? I'm plaugued with constant crashing. 16gb of Ram and not even 4gb of it is utilized. And on top of that my computer idles at 2.1gb leaving KSP with just under 2gb to work with... thats pathetic.
  5. Well thanks again Johnno. What plugins would give me more information? I know Mechjeb has flight info, but I fear id give in to the autopilot feature lol. The game is too fresh for me to want that.
  6. So we have this website as you know. http://alexmoon.github.io/ksp/ The launch window planner. Im getting ready to send a large craft to Jool and I want to perform the ejection burn as efficiently as humanly possible. The ejection stage is going to have a lot of power. No nukes so the burn time will be short and accurate ( if I can manage that ) Id LIKE to head out on a direct trajectory. No mid course correction. ( Unless you'd recommend otherwise. ) Only a burn to adjust the Jool periapsis so that I get a flat, eq orbit. This site gives a lot of nice information. But sadly I don't really know how to apply it. I use Engineer redux and Id like to figure out a way to utilize this information with it. Now..im guessing the ballistic option is what I want for a straight shot to Jool, yes? So theres a few values that id like some explanation on. ejection angle ( 110 degrees to prograde in my instance. I know what this is, but does ER give me this value? ) ejection inclination ( -3.61 degrees - How do I apply that value? Not sure ER gives me the current angle of the craft ) And.. as far as the transfer plot graph goes... w..tf am I even looking at? lol I swear stuff like this makes me feel dyslexic. Some of the Dv readouts on it scare the hell out of me Other then that most of the information is pretty clear. Id just like a little more insight so I can absolutely NAIL this ejection burn.
  7. So let's say I want to go to Laythe. I aero brake through Jool to bring my apoapsis to Laythe's orbit. Then what? The chances of Laythe being at the right spot at the aero brake are slim, no? So do I just wait in that eliptical orbit around Jool until Laythe gets to the right phase THEN make the transfer burn? What if the burn window occurs when my ship is at its apoapsis? Is it just a big waiting game?
  8. See this is why it would've been nice if the scale of the solar system was a little bigger. Atleast half as big as SoL.
  9. This is ridiculous how long has this been here? Ive been looking for graphical mods since day one this is great. Is it possible to upgrade the original planets textures?
  10. Wow thanks for introducing that mod Ive been looking for something like this since I started playing the game. The current skybox isn't too good, but I downloaded the realistic skybox and its an actual star map of the sky it looks amazing. I do agree this is something everyone should have whether you like mods or not. EDIT ...Wait wait wait there are planet textures too?! W>T>F Where has this been?!! ...that's gotta be too good to be true
  11. I have a question that relates. Lets say you take a set of probes to Jool. Each one destined for a moon. You go in for an aero brake into Jool's atmosphere to bring the apoapsis of each probe to the orbit of the target moon. So to do this each probe enters Jool at a different height. When I set the height for each probe...then what? I cant control all of them at the same time so will the probes that I don't have selected even aero brake properly? Because correct me if im wrong, but after 2.5km the object is on rails, no?
  12. On what stage decouple at what altitude id say that it does not matter OP. If the ship has 5k Dv then it CAN make it into a circular 80km Kerbin orbit. The only thing I try to avoid is having stages decouple right at my gravity turn. I try to make it happen before or after once the ship turns over and stabilizes.
  13. " A boat's disappearance, for example, would be reported, but its eventual (if belated) return to port may not have" That's a large loophole lol. I don't believe in this stuff, but if there is something going on it has a natural explanation. Not super. For instance ...I believe in ghosts. Ive had an encounter with an anomaly a few years back. But again I do not believe in the super natural. Just like the triangle ghosts must have a physical explanation. There are things we do not understand about our universe. How does death work? Is the soul recycled and used for infants? Stuff like that.
  14. I remember watching the test. They fired the foam out of an air cannon. It went right through the heat shield like tin foil. Not a lot of words were said afterwards. I remember sitting there with my mouth open thinking oh..my..god. That sucked something fierce. So stupid. Those people suffered the most horrific death..because of a piece if f****ing foam.
  15. The sight of an atmosphere igniting. Not even sure if I can imagine that properly. Makes me think of the Manhattan project. A lot of people thought the first nuke would set the Earths atmosphere ablaze....its a good thing that didn't happen. Also they did this on an episode of Futurama. Pine trees took over the world. Flooded it with o2. And Bender sparked up a cigar. Everyone died. Great episode.
  16. That is very cool. Personally id rather see weather and auroras before cities. I think lightning on the dark side would be a far better sight then cities. Especially intense lightning when orbiting Jool. I'd glady take both though lol.
  17. I NEED mods. When I need to send up a 350 ton payload I NEED mods. Do you have any idea how many stock parts a lifter of that size would take? Easily over 500. PLUS a thousand part payload. So if I can download the American pack and Nova punch I can make an over powered lifter for 1/8th the part count. Building stock lifters for me is not fun. At all. Too many parts. Too much lag. Too much trouble shooting. And on top of that stock lifters are ugly as sin. And don't ever say it takes more skill to handle stock parts. Thats bull and you know it. Mods add features which add to the complexity factor.
  18. Yes I want more sound. When ur in Iva it'd be great to hear the fuel pumps winding. I also think the rocket sound should be more aggressive. Like the rolling thunder in real life.
  19. I refuel my upper stages and use them for interplanetary ejection burns.
  20. So... those clouds you have there lol.
  21. It shouldn't be too dramatic of a change in weight. Another question.. off topic, but I didn't want to create a new one. How is it I can make the Oscar B fuel tank attach radially? Is there something I can do in the part file?
  22. I'm going to check that mod out Sapphire thanks. It's as small of a probe I can make so It should only take a small balloon.
  23. I plan on sending a probe down into Jool's atmosphere. And im thinking of ways I can design something that will keep a small probe body alive on the surface. If at all possible. I was thinking something along the lines of a roll cage made out of I-beams. Has anyone ever tried anything like this?
