  1. In that example yes. But in general not really.
  2. I would stick with the 980 over 6 core CPU. AS you have mentioned most games are GPU dependent right now. And there aren't many games that could use the full 6 cores anyways. As for AMD vs Nvidia. AMD has slightly better $ to performance compared to Nvidia. However AMD doesn't have a truly Ultra high end card like the GTX Titan yet. With Nvidia you're paying for brand and bells and whistles. You could then of course go into the "Nvidia are anti-gamer/anti consumer" thing. I'm not going to go into much detail on that unless asked. And you still haven't really answer why it must be 144hz. @Alphasus To my knowledge Skylake can do SLI/Crossfire just fine. I wouldn't really recommend it over just one really good card though. There are more issues that just one. Also AMD cards aren't really smaller or cooler running.
  3. I think you may have misinterpreted what I said. I never said you should buy a 1440p monitor.(Actually I would generally advise the opposite.) I was asking about the 144hz
  4. Why, no less than 144Hz? 4K isn't really worth the price at this point. Nothing scales very well with it. And it take a lot of power to run. I never really saw the apple of 1440p over 1080p. I would personally get a Dell UltraSharp U2415. It's only 60hz, but it has very good color accuracy and is 1920x1200(16:10). A 144hz monitor won't do very much if your ingame FPS isn't close to it. Don't know how much that will affect you though. As for GPU the 980 should work fine, but you could also get the nano that Alphasus mentioned or just a plain R9 Fury. Sidenote: To answer your question about the step above 4k it's 5k. Right now only Dell and Apple make them iirc.
  5. It's slated to come out after 1.1 drops right?
  6. Actually, If I remember correctly there was a blog post about them splitting the gaming side of the company and the marketing side. I do want multiplayer though it will probably not ending up with these big giant servers with a bunch of people on it, but probably more self-hosted servers with a few friends.
  7. Well you learn something new every day. Though the statement still stands I guess.
  8. Guess I'll be sticking to windows 8.1 then. For SSD I would say stick with sata unless you can find m.2 for about the same price. In real world applications you won't see very much gain. Also make sure the MOBO has an m.2 slot. I would just grab something like the hyper 212 evo for the cpu cooler. It's cheap and does a better job than the stock. PSU I would get a 500ish watt and at least 80+ bronze. Just make sure it's from a reputable company. For cases it honestly down to personal taste and how large you want it. Bit fenix, Cooler Master, and Corsair are some of the names that I can think of off the top of my head. (There are many more.)
  9. I'll look at them Edit: dosen't look like they make them anymore.
  10. Meanwhile I'm here with only the stock case fans. It's a 600t though so they're not bad fans just really average. Probably going to have to replace the 200mm fans soon though. There starting to get squeaky.
  11. Doesn't really bother me as the rest of my system is louder than the CPU cooler. YMMV I guess.
  12. I was agreeing with you on the RAM part. The upgraded cooler is not needed and is more a luxury that can be upgraded too later where as a GPU/CPU upgrade would cost significantly more.
  13. I would drop the CPU cooler as it's not need. It's non-K so it can't overclock and put more money into the GPU. The GPU while okay is still rather weak. Also does he need a monitor? I would stick with one stick of RAM since that's likely to be a future upgrade and it give you more room to expand.
  14. Depends on where or not the improvement is large enough to justify the extra cost. I'm going to lean towards no.
  15. Drop the i7 get a i5 6600/K.General rule of thumb is if you can not tell exactly where you would use the Hyperthreading from an i7 you will not need it and are better off getting an i5. There's also not really a point to buy last gen cpus now. You could also drop the PSU down to 600ish W. The r9 380 will be more than enough for your needs. I have the MSI 4gb version running at 1920x1200 and it works fine. Just grab the 4gb version not the 2gb(slightly debatable but I think it will help in the long run.) Unless they've changed something KSP is still single threaded and heavily single CPU core dependent. Meaning 1 fast cor will beat out 4 slow ones almost every time. They make pretty good monitors. My cousin has one of them and they're not bad.
  16. A good place to do comparisons and priceing is https://pcpartpicker.com/. For actually buying if you're in America look and see if you have Micro center close to you. Amazon and newegg are also good. I would set aside an afternoon for the entire build from assembly to loading OS, drivers, and troubleshooting. Do you have general idea what you want to use the computer for and how much you are going to budget?
  17. Need to go and change my craft links over to KerbalX.
  18. Just use a separate boot drive and a data drive. It will be a lot cheaper without very much difference in performance. A PCIe SSd also takes up a PCIe slot and some of the "bandwidth" from the GPU. A SATA SSD or M.2 SSD will probably work better for you with out costing way too much money. For GPU My vote is for the R9 380 It's cheaper than an 960 and slightly better.
  19. I agree with Elthy most of the time i7's are a waste of money. Generally if you can't list the programs that you use where the extra cores will help you don't need it. Also while PCIe SSD's are fast there also very expensive and at this point in time not really worth the money, unless your moving several GB of data around everyday.
  20. Said this before and I'm saying it again. That was really really good.
  21. Sounds about the same as what I'm doing right now. I have a rather old PC that's missing a PSU and a HDD. I also have a 7870 just laying around after I got a new GPu.
  22. Speaking of used part's what do you guys do with them?
  23. I have a similar issue as well. I know however that it's coming from one of my HDDs though (seagate constellation), so maybe check them?
