  1. He just tries wackier stuff than most of us, because he plays so much he gets bored with the "norm". He is constantly doing things I never thought of (nor am good enough to actually pull off!)
  2. I guessed the pipe. Evidence was misleading.
  3. Truly appreciate you taking the time to give us the details of the mission Katateochi. Great planning, great engineering, and fantastic execution. Kudos
  4. Custom 1: Toggle all Solar arrays Custom 2: Toggle all Lights Custom 3: Toggle Landing legs/gear Custom 4: Deploy Chutes Custom 5: Toggle Ladders Custom 9: PANIC!: Immediate separation of command pod, legs down, and chute deployment
  5. Perma-Death and a tech tree are going to add a ton of personality to our crews! Combine these with the career mode debut, is it reasonable to assume there may be an economic system from which you would need to allocate funds for research? I would also guess that many parts will be rebalanced to give more variance in performance. I like the idea of having general "fields" of study rather than specifically researching the LVT-30. Like "gimbal engines" could be a field. This way you could tie fields of research together to get more advanced equipment. For instance, there could be multiple fields of research associated with utility type equipment. Power generation, power conservation, power storage, parachute sizes/operating altitudes(customizable!), parachute attach points, etc. . . So to get the radial chute, you would need to research 2 or 3 fields to meet all of the criteria. Another alternative would be to have 4 or 5 general fields, with multiple levels of research in each field. ie: LVT-45: Requires Engine Research Level 4, Structural Research Level 3, and the "Fuel efficiency" trait.
  6. I like to think that my kerbals are aware of my existence. They know I'm doing "something", they just don't know if it's going to be "good" or "bad". I can see their pleading little eyes, pointing at the guy next to him, like "Take him! he WANTS to go! See!?" In that context, they likely just tell themselves "Blade works in mysterious ways. . . Sometimes it seems, without rhyme or reason."Hah! What a primitive species that could simply placate all of their doubts with such a simple phrase! Humans are far more advanced than that.
  7. You have likely run into a firewall/ browser security issue. As was suggested, disable all add-ons in your browser, or even simpler than that, install a new browser, fresh just for this task. If you are using firefox, dl chrome and try it, There are other issues like this that can make having multiple browsers a useful tool for working around issues/incompatibilities. Edit: Yeah, dont bother removing/re-adding all of your addons, just try a fresh browser (and possibly make an inbound/outbound rule for it if you're using windows firewall).
  8. Pro's 1: It can control perfect ascents, circularizations, rendevous, and landings for you.(with an occasional WTF hiccup.) 2: It does these things using an order of operations to maximize effeciency, which can help newer players learn. 3: Smart ASS. A translation tool that allows you to translate in perfect increments relative to nearly any object/body. 4: It provides all pertinent information to any voyage. TWR, DeltaV breakdown by stages, intercept angles, inclinations, etc. Con's 1: For some (me) it is hard to keep your hand out of the cookie jar. MJ is capable of completely removing the flight experience. The only downside IMO. I don't know any reason NOT to try anything. Check it out, it's actually a bit of a learning curve for the first hour or so (Just discerning what the language refers to), but it all makes sense.
  9. I GOTTA know, did you learn to improvise all the way to Duna like that? No planned maneuvers? That totally intrigues me to the point of wanting to try.
  10. I'm sure the guys that have been around have seen this happen before. I've read about it, but I'm here to tell you MJ junkies: It's TRUE. So I picked up the game 3-4 months ago, and sucked. No, really, I mean I was terrible at it. The joy of the game was measured only by how spectacularly (or quickly) I failed a mission. I was able to achieve stable orbit (elliptical) and maybe intercept (crash a kerbal into) the mun. Then I found MechJeb, and *click* it worked. Well, inevitably the cookie jar was open, and i couldn't help myself. (read that analogy here, I think.) I apparently paid attention, even tho I remember it more as: 1.*click* Jool 2.minimize to read messages while making a sandwich. 3. *click* land. 4. End mission and grab another rocket. 5. *Click* Moho. (you see where this is going.) Fast forward to .21 update. Playing stock, with a new save, from scratch. I know I suck, but now I'm gonna blow up on pretty new surfaces. I used some premade stock stuff, and couldnt keep it pointed upwards for anything, even with the new SAS system (and yeah, i was ready to blame it on that). I removed all of the references of MJ from my favorite craft file in my old save, and it loaded up just fine. So, this is where it gets interesting. I launch, and it stays perfectly straight. I move and the SAS stabilizes it, exactly where i would expect it to. I pull off an absolutely perfect ascent, watch my apoapsis, and prograde burn to curcularize my orbit, at the exact altitude I wanted. I make a maneuver node to intercept the Mun, and nail it. Circularize my orbit at 30k, split my landers (2 of em, manned) in an identical orbit, and proceed to land the first. Perfect landing, a bit off from where i was aiming, but gorgeous touchdown. Switched to the second lander, and created a node above the first one, retrograded and tweaked it a little to hit smack on my other module, and landed 640m away from it. I was stunned. Of course I was up way too late pulling this off, and went to bed with Orbital mechanics pervading all of my thoughts/dreams. The nex day I decided to aim higher and launched another mission to Duna, freehand. It was a bit more difficult obtaining and tweaking the intercept, but I was able to land both landers, 297m away this time. One of the landers even remained upright! (The other lost a leg while I learned about horizontal velocity in a low G environment *cough*). Anyway, to make a long story long, MJ taught me how the orbital mechanics are to be used in the game. It taught me how to fly, so I guess I wont be needing it anymore. Sorry for the rant, proceed.
  11. I was able to get a couple of landers on Duna. Both right smack in the middle of a huge flat desert. Although, flat does not mean the same as it did in .20 . More like thousands of small, rolling sand dunes spread for many miles. (Much like the 3rd pic above, minus the "hills").
  12. I have a "dual lander" that is 2 landers back to back, and even mounted a tiny rover on the tip of lander 1. However, in order to use it I have to establish a stable orbit, and detach the two landers. the 2nd lander is fine while I land (fail) the first. Funny part is, I usually just end up getting 2 shots at landing and one of them (usually) survives. Poor little green guys, I need counseling.
  13. if you could post some coordinates (or as near as you can remember) I'm sure a few of us would enjoy going to check it out.
  14. That is the furthest up a mohole I have ever seen a living kerbal. (You DO have a live one in there, right?)
  15. I'll be honest, I was using mechjeb for the last couple of months. The "lazy" way too. . .Click "Eve" and minimize while checking my messages, lazy. But with the update I've been flying full manual control, and I've learned the what they say is true: The damn thing taught me how to fly. Dont think I'll install it again even if it's updated. I really enjoy flying it now that I know what to do.
  16. Think that's pretty accurate. I'm now going to cut out my own eyeballs with an un-sterilized tuna fish can lid to ensure that I never see this happen.
  17. Vassilli Kerbovski, The brave first kerbal to achieve a(n) (un)stable orbit. (In one piece.)
  18. Kerbovsky : Kerbovich : Kerbalchev.
  19. I'm sure you mean name the grandmothers and devs after my dead kerbals also, cause I've run out of bumps on the Mun!
  20. Wow, I'm surprised at how many guys with a dumptruck full of posts on the forum, are like. . .irritated by this subject. Half of these guys are genuinely turning gears in their heads, throwing out ideas. . .And the other half are saying "Arrrrrgh! This AGAIN?! Can we just F%^ng KILL this subject already?" C'mon guys, Let people share ideas you have already hashed over a hundred times. Just because you are sick of talking about it doesn't necessarily mean the rest of the planet needs to "Shut up about it already." Don't open the damn thread just to troll it. If you hate it, pass it by.
  21. Ha! Love katateochi's post on page 3 (I missed the quote button apparently).Tongue in cheek, all worries to the wind! @Whackjob, you feel free to tell us everything you are doing multiple times. If I either get to hear your enthusiasm, or people sick of hearing others enthusiasm, I'll take your grinning mug all day!
  22. Good flying, gotta appreciate a perfect landing too. Kudos!
  23. Okay, Let's say 25 or 30 of us are on a KSP server, playing a multiplayer, persistent world. . .and a couple of you guys have put up nice, habitable stations around kerbin. So, stay with me here, 3 guys are on a station docking/refuelling etc. . .I am on the pad about to launch to said base. What's to say those guys couldn't just play at 1.0 compression, while i jump 4.0 to expedite my journey. Would it have any adverse effects, really? Okay, you couldn't time a rendezvous with another player correctly if one of them time compresses and another doesn't. But places and such should be easy to meet at. . ."Hey phil, meet me at Jool in 20 minutes!"it wouldn't be "realistic", but it would be accessible. You guys got any thoughts or obvious holes in this concept??
  24. I'm on board with ya, minus 4, 6, 7, and 8. Nice thread!
