  1. Nah, Satellites dont look like planes and other misc aircraft. They litterally look like moving stars wheras arcraft will be green and red and will flash. Also sattellites will look like they have a wobble to them every now and then depending on atmospheric conditions. They are also silent
  2. Games take years to develope. However with the advent of early access gaming, alot of people have the mentality "I've paid for it, it should be finished soon" I remember when halo 2 got delayed by nearly a year. These things happen, we're just fortunate enough to be able to play the game and watch it evolve. Instead of having to wait for the end product, play it for 50 hours then move onto the next call of duty.
  3. Too many variables to just have 1 plan. First off is it an airbourne virus? what percentage of humanity is immune. What are the zombies like? Are they true to the definition IE reanimated dead corpses? or is it some sort of virus that causes zombie like symptoms? The "I am legend" style of apocolypse seems plausible and i would class those as zombies The 28days later zombies could work in a real life scenario as you only have to out live them. However the reason why an "i am legend" apocolypse would be the only feasable scenario is because of the outbreak method. Notice how the majority of zombie films/games will cut out the part where the world actually becomes infected? thats because like it or not the government and military would take some very swift action. They probably have scenarios for various bio weapon attacks which is essentially what a zombie outbreak would be like. So. In my plan the world is as follows. Either a) a vaccine with underlying zombie-esk side effects is issued to the economically developed world. a super power has tested a weaponised virus however instead of dying out (like a normal weaponised virus) it keeps on spreading, evolves to keep human hosts alive with a taste for anything that moves or a personal favourite scenario c) A fungus or some type of plant(either from space or genetically altered or evolved) that spreads through the air and gets into the hosts brain (havent quite figured out how but it happens to some ants) and causes them to be highly aggressive however, they are more aggressive during the day (as these plant/fungus/human hybrids) live off of sunlight and other plants for sustenance. This doesnt mean they arent active at night but they arent out on the prowl at night! (this also makes a nice change to the usual "zombies come out more at night" affair Scenario c)is pretty hard to suurvive as you cannot really be immune to a fungus growing in your brain. However a 1% immunity to scenario a and b is plausible. Either way I can survive quite happily in the wilderness and im quite proficient in vehicle maintanence. First order of business is to leave built up areas. Vehicle of choice is a diesel 4x4 my choice would be a land rover defender but you can choose more luxury if you wish however the simpler the better packed with various supplies including basic radio equipment and a small assortment of vehicle spares along with basic hunting euipment. I havent chosen a military vehicle as I dont know how to drive or maintain one and they arent fuel efficient so without a logistics devision to help out they are a bit of a no no. I would consider going back for a small apc as a safehouse to park next to my land rover. Again simpler stuff is better in an apocolypse situation, you wont have access to special manufacturers and repair companies if your stuff goes wrong. After a while or so, again depending on infected to human ratios, its time to make our way to small towns as my vehicle of choice will no doubt need some spare parts and as my defender is a pretty common vehicle i wont have to go to the more built up areas to find one. Next order of the day is to make contact with other un infected through radio or visual. Theres plenty of harbours near me so sailing around the costs in a christmas tree is possible but again, boats will have a limited range and I have no idea how you go about getting fuel for a small boat. Other than that its just a case of surviving. Dont forget to go find an electronics store and steal yourself a laptop and transfer your ksp to it so you have something to do until the end!
  4. Look up at the sky at near dusk and dawn. You will see a few satellites moving about. They look like moving stars.
  5. I also think mechjeb is kinda similar to a calculator. Sure i can do stuff in my head or write it down. However a calculator saves time. I can still do stuff wrong with a calculator but at least i managed to do it wrong quickly without ruining a perfectly good piece of paper. Why, just the other day i was adding up all my ebay invoices. I used a calculator? Does that mean i cheat at life? Isnt the whole "playing ksp because i cant be a real astronauht" kinda cheating at life? I know its not that simple but think about it. I could go and learn how to be a rocket man and actually go to outerspace. Or i can pretend goto outerspace.
  6. I use mechjeb all the time. I have a craft i want to put into orbit? but i also have a hankering for a hot chocolate? Pop on the mechjeb autopilot and go make a brew. 9 times out of 10 the launch is still happening when i get back. I also quite often use it to fly my nodes for me. If its a tedious mission such as flying several new fuel tanks up to my space station then i really cannot be bothered to fly every single flight into orbit. The deltav calculator is extremely usefull as well as the intake control for space planes. Dont get me wrong i could do these things myself but sometimes...i just cannot be bothered to repeat the same launch over and over when i could infact have ksp running in the background whilst i make use of my time elsewhere...like coming onto the forums and getting inspiration! No one has to use mechjeb, but if you enjoy the game more using it then go nuts!
  7. did you know that if you put an unmanned pod upside down then the computer will think its pointing down when it is in fact pointing up. This wasnt a problem until i found mechjeb. I assumed mechjeb was just garbage and didnt work...it took me soo long to figure out the pod was upside down...so very long.
  8. Im with bainbridge. Actually designing and getting ym first craft into an orbit was by far the best feeling i ever had. Considering back then it was just slapping rockets together, keep flying up and hoping it would make orbit. It seems trivial now as its just second nature now and what was once a fantastic sight, watching kerbin rotate below me as i watch the sun rise behind the blue atmosphere with that gentle music, its now just the norm and the only time i really look at it any more is when im docking stuff at the refueling station in kerbin orbit because its kinda hard to miss. Sure there have been several benchmarks since then. Like discovering the node system, landing rovers on various planets, building ssto's that will make orbit...but i think that initial 1 kerbal i sent up into a stable orbit after so many had died was a great feat and i can rememebr just putting ships in orbit thinking "im a freaking rocket scientist god!"...those were the days
  9. Im pretty spot on at getting to the mun with that deltav map. But I just suck at the landing. What would be the best way to land and from what altitude. I have been trying all sorts from 20km to 5km with varying results. Hmm...Google may well be my friend here! *scurries off to google and youtube*
  10. According to that delta v map. From a munar orbit it should cost me 640 ms to land on the mun. However it costs me closer to 1000. So i was wondering the best way to go about landing. Do i do a retrograde burn from a higher orbit and drop straight down onto the surface and kill off my speed at the last possible moment? Do i do a gentle burn until touch down. I just cant seem to land on the mun using less than 1000dv and its really bugging me as it makes planning ahead difficult. I dont want any unessesary weight. Im trying to make it as efficient as possible so i dont want to take more than i need. EDIT:Now that i read my own post back...the title of the thread isnt exactly relevant -.-
  11. Ages ago I saw a challenge to land on the mun and back with a spaceplane without refueling on stock parts. I've been trying this challenge for weeks on and off and to be honest have gotten pretty good at making some efficient and pretty genius spaceplane designs on stock parts. However I finally have a good design that gets me to an 80km kerbin orbit with 2100m/s of dv. Ok so using this delta v map I need 1710 ms to land on the mun. Now obviously using that map. Im not going to be getting it home however after landing i will have mabe 20m/s of dv left. So im already 400m/s behind! Is there some magic trick that I'm missing here. Is it worth actually attaining a munar orbit or should i just aim to crash on the mun and skip the whole orbit thing? would this be more efficient? Im jsut stumped as I can seem to get close to the delta v that these maps seem to require!
  12. Your screenshot doesnt look like you have made the docking port your target. You will also want to select the docking port on your ship and select "control from here" this will mean the tagets on your nav ball will be the exact targets you need to dock. I dont think i have ever used the docking mode which uses the rcs thrusters to dock.
  13. After seing this i watched all your ksp vids. I tip my hat to you sir. The jeb movie is my favourite. Makes me want to cry everytime i watch the beginning!
  14. I know its not strictly related to this exact thread but are you able to alter anything on the current planets? ie make the muns gravity stronger/weaker?
  15. It would be nice if you could see your orbiting stations at dusk and dawn on kerbin (as you can in real life) as a small start going across the sky and remember, things in ksp are alot smaller than the real world. The planets and the distances between them and their moons. I expect that if everything was to scale in ksp you would still be able to make out minmus with a pair of binoculars and no atmosphere or light pollution getting in the way. So it makes sense that you can zoom in on it. Have you ever tried looking at a sattellite through a telescope? its not easy and it still jsut looks like a star moving through the sky. So does the iss (well it does with my telescope anyway)
  16. To push the boat out a little bit. Depending on our level of rocketry and the state of debris in our orbit> Maybe we could put some sort of object in orbit around the sun and time it to collide with the asteroid? Depending on what the object is and all the reletivve speeds the asteroid and object are doing then maybe a collision far enough away from us would cause the asteroid to miss us completley? If say the asteroid collided with our asteroid moving object near the edge of our system then maybe it would force the asteroid somewhere cool like jupiter. My physics is pretty poor but it seems like something that is do able. Hell, a 1 ton object impacting it at a bajillion m/s has got to do something. Isnt there a mission planned somewhere to measure the affects of a small impact on an asteroid? Would save us sending heeps of nukes through a debris ridden orbit. Can you imagine the fallout that could be caused by multiple nukes being detonated in low orbit? EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Quijote_(space_probe) Answered my own question
  17. I doubt i can even put up an argument here as i argue with myself about it. To me the space race ended one there was a man on the moon which NASA managed first...however the ussr managed pretty much every other feet first. First man to orbit the earth. First man to spend a day in space, first un manned space mission, first probe to the moon, first probe to orbit the moon etc etcPersonally I feel the ussr won If it were a points system with points awarded to the first team to complete a feat with all feats giving the same points then the ussr wins. If it were a traight up race to the finish point (IE a man on the moon) then the US wins so I'm completley stumped. I also feel thats when the "space race" ended. Once the first man was up there interest declined and so did budgets, along with the end of the cold war there was now now military need to continue to pour money into space programs!
  18. If you dont leave it manned or with an on board computer it will default to "debris" when you seperate from it. Goto your map and hover your mouse at the top and highlight debris. You should be able to find it there. Over the last 5 days I have been trying the challenge to get an ssto to land on the mun and back on stock parts without docking for re fuel. I have made several contraptions that normally start of small and efficient but end up huge. I also tried making a c150 inspired cargo spaceplane...i even managed to get it into orbit. The first two pictures are of an earlier desing which had to be scrapped due to the cockpit randomly falling off and the wings would just drop off before the plane even started moving. Unfortunatley my landing was so slightly off. I was about 5 meters to short and almost landed before the runway (which has a slight lip) this meant i had to engage engines to gain some altitude so i could land again. Unfortunatley i came back to hard and...well the pictures show the results. http://imgur.com/a/o9ZN0
  19. The way i had it explained to me was. Tennis balls = photons saloon door = solar sail. As you throw the tennis balls at the door the door gets pushed open slightly. I think theres a theory that this effect is what causes some asteroids and meteors to lose their orbit in the asteroid belt. (some science guy on tv when that big ass meteroite went of russia) thats the simple version anyway. the great thing behind the theory of solar sails is that momentum would constantly increase infinately. So a solar sail craft will just get faster and faster.
  20. Weening myself off of mechjeb. I started playing ksp wildly firing rockets into the sky hoping to make it and then some orbit. I had some success and made it to minums before the mun (completley by accident) Then I found mechjeb and it slowly made the game boring. So i stopped playing to take time out (to play other games...not to do anything constructive) and came back after seing the steam news feed about the upcoming 0.22. So all I use mechjeb for is the delta V calculations cos i'm too lazy to work it out (come on, one of the main functions of computers is to work out equations for us!) and when the night is getting a bit daylight i start to use mechjeb to launch rockets to an apoapsis. Since coming back though i gotta say I'm addicted to SSTO. Im currently trying to make a big ass cargo plane (got the insperation from a screenshot on here) 4 jets and one of the bigger rockets gets it to orbit (with the rocket helping it get off the ground!) and i can land it but it looks ugly as hell so I'm trying to refine the design. Is it sad that thinking about finalising the design is really exciting?
  21. Just wanted to bump this for such a great idea. Been reading the mission reports and has kept me occupied at work for the evening. I wish i was a commander on the list but i'm a little to nooby to be involved
