Subject Change: Docking Port Magnetic Kraken Drive
Captain Sierra replied to selfish_meme's topic in KSP1 Discussion
THE KRAKEN DRIVE LIVES! Prepare for rampant abuse. -
KSP, due to its propensity to inconveniently crash (particularly when modded, which it borderline needs to be), true Ironman mode is not possible. The thing about XCOM is it autosaves after every move you make. KSP doesnt do this, so you have to manually do it via quicksave. If the game crashes, use debug menu to unlock quickloading for a minute, and reload your previous place (I believe the game autosaves on quickload so the persistence is instantly caught up). Also, unless you're a seasoned craft designer and use KER, I highly advise the use of a sandbox test save.

What do YOU do when a new KSP is available?
Captain Sierra replied to problemecium's topic in KSP1 Discussion
My standard procedure is pretty similar to RIC's. I'll download the zip within a day or two, set up a stock isntall, and determine if the feature additions are worth suffering through the lack of my must-have mods until they update. (since I can count on Engineer being updated usually within 24 hours) I will sometimes play on that if new stuff > must-have mods for a few days. Otherwise I go back to my old installs. I need to get in the habit of moving saves over. I haven't colonized Jool again since 0.24.2 and with me now getting into OPM, I need to start doing save migration. -
So I decided to make an engine cluster with SpaceY parts.

And this is what happens when Whackjob gets ahold of your mod. -

I live in the middle of redneck nowhere, so I don't believe its my house wiring as much as it is the power infrastructure around here. My PSU can output 600 watts and I'm pulling almost 550 of those at max load. I have no doubt I'm highly susceptible to that. Just that 2 in one day both while playing CS:GO raised some red flags (anyone who's built their own rig knows that thing is like your baby, and when your baby starts having problems you get concerned). My power supply is a 600W Corsair and its less than a year old. I know I run it hard, but Corsair is a sufficiently reputable brand name. I don't think my PSU would be going bad already.

Being stupidly paranoid about heating from my old laptop, my gut reaction is to put my and to the exhaust fans. Didn't feel ant hotter than normal. Processor using factory cooler but with arctic silver thermal grease. I don't believe in coincidence with computers so I'll mention that both times were during games of CS:GO (and my system is beefy enough that doesn't tax it). Will give a quick look yo the intake filter in the morning

My rig decided to randomly shut down on me today. This wasn't windows or some other program doing a restart, this was a hard shutdown as though I'd pulled the cord out. Ordinarily I wouldn't actually be concerned, as I'm pulling close to my power supply max wattage and slight dips in local power (not uncommon) can do this to me. Mow, it did it to me again. I have not booted it back up so I can check the crash logs. Rig is a custom build under a year old so hardware going bad is unlikely. Because it didn't blue-screen on me I'm a bit unsure where to go digging for said logs or other troubleshooting references. Advice apreciated.

[1.10.x] Mark IV Spaceplane System (August 3)
Captain Sierra replied to Nertea's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
This is a problem with the stock offset limits. I recommend using the NoOffsetLimits mod, which as an additional benefit, removes this problem. -

We all like the visuals of the KW fairing bases, but the stock fairings just don't do that. Here's to making them look a bit cooler. Using a size down of decoupler and two sets of struts (I used 6x for the 2.5-1.25m conversion) with some offsetting, you can create this. Hope to see some people making slightly less awful stock fairings with this.

How do you have your subscription settings set?

Specific threads (namely the Nertea mods) to control panel. My inbox is cluttered enough. -
I find this site to be incredibly useful.

Did someone order a truckload of delta V?

Due to Dres' inclination and the sizable braking burn involved, its probably more efficient to just go straight for Eeloo rather than the pit stop, but this is KSP where realism and efficiency are taken with a few grains of salt.

Airbus presents concept for Mach 4 passenger plane
Captain Sierra replied to Frank_G's topic in Science & Spaceflight
It won't go commercial because its a huge up-front investment to make your fleet supersonic. Why would they spend small fortune for our convenience when we tolerate the current arrangement and they're making stupid amounts of money? -
Well, light reflecting off of something is never a perfect redirection of energy. Some of it is lost as heat in the material. Realistically I'd expect the light to dissipate as heat almost instantly after some bouncing. Though, since you specify perfect reflectivity, I have no idea.

Well good to know a single harvester can break even. Now time for my mission overengineering skills to kick in and try and get a net profit from it.

So I'm looking for some general information, thoughts, and opinions on the dres-deroids. (There may be a third website revamp in progress and a mission series incoming. ) Some specifics I'm interested in: What's the altitude/inclination/eccentricity range they spawn in? How much luck have people had mining them? Is it even theoretically possible to break even on a resourcing op?
