  1. Wasn't this the Goddard Problem? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goddard_problem
  2. Try messing around with asymmetrical rockets perhaps? If you adjust thrust between the spaceplane and the rocket it's attached to it's possible to keep it under control with default gimbal ranges
  3. The few times I've done it I went from Minmus, shot around Kerbin and got caught by the moon on my way up towards apoapsis. (first few times I did this was a mistake though.)
  4. I agree with this. Let squad make something different if they want, and not be too expectant on what comes next.
  5. Personally I think it would take too much dev time to get this working, and for what? How any units of charge would this give back?
  6. Giving Minmus an atmosphere height of 10000 with a pressure of 500000 didn't do anything (for reference Kerbin has a height of 5 and a pressure of 1). I did set the "Has Atmosphere" to true as well.
  7. I've been wanting to edit Minmus to have an extremely think atmosphere that lies only just above the lakes (in the canyon things). Hyperedit can't do this is seems, is it because I have an ancient version (haven't updated since .21). Is it because of how outdated my plugin is or because it can't give Minmus an atmosphere?
  8. I'm by no means that good with this stuff but I'd wager a guess that Ike's storing heat from the Sun, and tidal heating would also play a part
  9. Personally I use a periapsis of around 24km right above KSC, and then maneuver as necessary to come down on the runway. EDIT: I use FAR so this may not apply to you
  10. Not much science involved, but try creating an aircraft to fly to the poles and back?
  11. Honestly they need to give more reason to go to other planetary bodies. In 500 hours played I've landed on Duna thrice, Eeloo once, and done a few probes/flybys of the other planets. I don't play career mode either, I find it's a grind fest to unlock parts so you can go back to playing sandbox mode. Until they add budgets and reputation and that sort of stuff I won't really touch it
  12. I'd be more than happy without a pilot, it gets rid of human error. Also like others have said people tend to add a lot of weight to a spacecraft and they aren't really needed.
  13. Also correction about deorbit burn, I was wrong. This is a bit more complicated than I thought it would be lol
  14. Where do you get your energy requirements from? I'm using KSP with RSS for my estimate. Also from a 300km orbit, not a 420km one.
  15. I've started getting bored of rockets so KSP is more of a flight sim for me nowadays. I enjoy building planes with FAR and B9, today I've done a mission to the south pole and back, and I'm currently circumnavigating Kerbin (1 hour, 6 minutes in - around a quarter done)
  16. Ah, I was wondering about something like 100m/s or so. I was mostly talking bull with a friend about taking a bottle up to the ISS and putting a mentos in it while on EVA and seeing it shoot away. So nothing like what would be needed to deorbit from the ISS's altitude (irc 1km/s or so)
  17. What would the exhaust velocity of a 2L bottle of Coke with a mentos thrown into it be? Mostly because I want to calculate the delta-v for it really. If for some reason you don't know what I'm talking about, this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diet_Coke_and_Mentos_eruption
  18. Half the reason I did it was because I wanted a bi elliptic transfer
  19. I've tried messing around with gravity assists to achieve a bi-elliptical transfer, and I've currently gotten myself into a 998.929Gm by 63.6351Gm orbit after doing a 150km pass of Jool with a burn at closest approach to speed up. What kind of breaking burn am I looking at to circularize my Solar orbit at a very low periapsis? And is there some way of speeding up my 34 year wait till apoapsis? Krag's Planet Factory doesn't seem to have it's higher time warps enabled.
  20. Yeah I've played around with RSS a bit too much now to build big. I find it makes my lower stages way too big, besides I almost never take more than 20t to orbit. Don't really see why I should bother with ungainly rockets
  21. Ehh I just turn off the games music and listen to metal really
  22. I generally build to delta-v requirements. I also like using the lightest, smallest vehicles. That heavy LV-N makes your first stage quite a bit heavier (generally my stage to orbit in stock sizes, minus boosters of course)
  23. I use solid boosters for when I need just a bit of thrust to help my first stage burn fuel until it's TWR improves to over 1. Generally I'd have an initial TWR of 0.7 boosted to 1.5 by SRBs from KW Rocketry. By the time the boosters fall off my first stage has burnt enough fuel to accelerate faster than gravity can accelerate the rocket
