  1. Ok, I am at a loss. I know one of the mods is causing this crash, but I have no idea which one. And for some reason, Steam/Windows 10 is doing that crap again where I cannot delete any folder in the GameData folder because I do not have "administrator priviledges..."

But if someone smarter than I could take a look and see which one is the problem causing mod, I'd greatly appreciate it...

      @Snark:

I've done a version of that, but in the old song, One Piece at a Time, I've done it one mod at a time. Three of the mods are dead, and that will give me something to piddle with in the next few weeks - to rip out their guts, redo the parts, and repackage, and post. I'm wait and see if the mod creators respond to my inquiry under the CC rules.  It will be a new experience for me, but one that I am looking forward to, nonetheless!

As it stands, I am down to 1o mods that have not updated yet, but have a question about OPM... is it the same as it was before, where as long as Kopernicus is updated, it is good to go?

      monstah

If Kopernicus doesn't make any planet-breaking changes, then I suppose yes. My contract packs, for example, once Contract Configurator was updated I just threw them from my old GameData to the new one and they're A-OK.

That's good. I'm doing a test boot now. All looks good. Is texture replacer still functional in 1.3?

  2. Earlier today, I realized that it has been four months since my last violation of Forum rule 2.2 - the forbidden content rule. Now before any of you jump up and wonder, I will tell you that I love the art of political discourse. I also have a tendency to jump into a politically baited thread with both feet... which is clearly a violation of Forum Rule 2.2 (and this is why I have received four warnings from various moderators about such comments).

Well, today I was able to NOT take a swing at a low-hanging pitch begging for political commentary... and in celebration of that accomplishment, I present you the newest element of my signature:

20210125: During a signature update, I decided to share with those interested the exact forum rule that gave me the most headaches. I redid the image:

  3. Things to do today:

    • Try to figure out what I am doing wrong with my shuttle. I lose control once I've made it beyond the plasma.
      • This is perplexing. Once I drop below 38k and hit about 900 m/s, the stupid thing begins to spiral and flip over. The tail-end will be pointed in the direction of travel, and no matter what I do,  I cannot stop the spiral or change the orientation of the shuttle...
      • Any suggestions would help greatly.
    • Work on grading some assignments students have already submitted.
    • Laundry. Yeah, that time of the week. Laundry.
    • Work on some requested images for forum members.
    • Drink more coffee...
    • Change my header for my KSP profile.
    • Work on my Nohochacyum mod. I need to add the rest of the roughed planets, address the light curve issue, and try to figure out the asteroid thing.

  5. You know you really don't want to grade student assignments when:

    • You fold the clothes in the dryer which your wife said she would fold when she gets home from work.
    • You decide to go through the stack of paperwork which has been sitting on the corner of the desk for a week.
    • Repot three plants.
    • Wash the pots the plants came out of (don't want to store dirty pots).
    • Think of a new craft for KSP.
    • Consider keeping a vanilla copy of KSP just so you can play without mods.
    • Spend thirty minutes playing the piano...

    Yeah, one of those days...

'It's simply not possible!' Is a common answer, but not a good one. If something doesn't seem possible to me, i scavenge the interwebs for answers, this is what i found:

But here's the thing, even that website presents the "this is what we believe happened" thing. There are simply too many variables to say for certain.

In this article, What do we really know about Dino DNA?, there are some interesting statements made. Now I am not arguing the young Earth theory, but what I am saying is what if? What if there were dinosaurs or some sort of dinosaur descendant that lived around the same time as humans?

There are too many times we, as a species, have said "this must be the explanation" that we are not only wrong, but blinded by our own belief in ourselves.

No, I'm still kicking, @VoidCosmos. This semester has been very rough. At the community college I teach at, I gained two extra classes because a part-time instructor quit  in the middle of March. The instructor refused to take their classes to an online setting after our board of regents made the decision because of Covid-Wuhan (Covid-19). It wasn't an optional request...

Not having tenure, I really couldn't say no.

  8. Continuing to grade, I came across this gem in a student's term paper. The course is World Civilization to 1500:

    Quote

People from various religions would and still to this day travel to teach others about there religion. They are never forcing others to believe in what they tell them they are just telling their beliefs and practices to others in hopes people see the importance they see.

There is so much wrong with this statement. So much wrong...

@Daveroski, while the subject is history, there is a language proficiency component. It is this way across disciplines. It does not do any good to have knowledge about a subject but no way to communicate that knowledge in a standard language format.

I've been teaching at the university level since 2004. In each of the universities I have worked at, each has had the requirement in every disciplinary field that students must demonstrate proficiency in English. This is one of the reasons why, as in the case of the major research assignment in my course, a student's use of English is a part of the grading matrix. In fact, here's what I look for in a project paper:

      • The student's ability to state a thesis (argument or theory) and then prove it with data.
      • The student's ability to use historical data as that proof to support their thesis.
      • The student's ability to cite that data. I view history as a pseudo-science. It does not do anyone any good to do research and not allow others to verify the data on which you base your conclusions.
      • The student's ability to use standard American (or in some cases, British) English.

In this small excerpt, there were two major problems - the use of the English language and the "history". Do each of the major world religions (and I am only referring to the top ten) have some sort of missionary? Yes, this cannot be disputed. Do missionaries force conversions? Yes, they have in the past. There's the Moorish invasions which led to the Crusades, there's the Spanish exploration of South and Central America, the Spanish Inquisition, nearly 1,000 years of forced conversions at the hands of the Roman Catholic Church.

Then there is the long history of wars fought over religion. The Second War of Kappel (1531) had armies of Catholics and Protestants fighting one another, leaving somewhere around 700 casualties. The Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990) saw the death of over 150,000 people and was fought between Sunni and Shi'ites. The Second Sudanese Civil War (1983-2005) witnessed the death of over 2,000,000 and was fought between Muslims and Christians, much like the First Sudanese Civil War. And I've not even mentioned the Crusades, The German Peasant's War, The French Wars of Religion, the numerous wars in England, and the 30 Years' War.

The opinion was fine but only if she had some sort of historical fact to back up her claims. The part of the research project I quoted was actually one of the better written sentences of the paper. But where it might make a good philosophy paper, it is not a good historical paper. And one of the comments even stated " Only knowledge of the subject being taught should be considered" bears witness that the student does not understand history.

    3. Daveroski

All correct, rational and logical and the place she is talking about clearly doesn't exist.

Just imagine though how different and wonderful that world would be.

The facts are unfortunately much colder.

Back in the day, we feared and respected our teachers. The thought of rising up and doing  a teach physical harm... that was a line that none of us crossed. Even raising your voice or speaking in anger was a no-no.
Some teachers were just awful teachers and should have been vetted more fully and the teachers should have policed themselves much better than they did.
When one was caned at school for instance, it wasn't even so much the caning that students were afraid of. It was more the humiliation of being punished in front of your peers. Feeling all their eyes on you as you made your way to the stage in assembly where the cane would be administered. Everyone knew that you had reached the ceiling of tolerance and were now going to be 'put in your place'.

Now students have no fear of their teachers and when the fear left, so did the respect. As a species, humans have put themselves on a pedestal and believe their young have qualities that they simply do not possess. They are teased constantly on TV with commodities that neither they nor their parents can afford.
They can go to school in expensive clothing, setting themselves apart from their peers and even their teachers. They are allowed to use and carry technology that takes the individual thought out of their studies. In many cases around the world, exams have been simplified to raise the number of students who pass.

Students are taught that degree level jobs ensure wealth and respect.
' One simply must have a degree to be anything in this world...'
You have degrees. How are things on the Wealth and respect front for you?
How many people do you know with degrees? How many of them do you respect?
I went to school for several more years than many of my peers.I don't feel that I am more respected than anyone else. I'm certainly not incredibly wealthy either.

I don't envy you your job and I have the utmost respect that you are doing it. I feel somewhat amazed that you can get up each day and get on with such a monumental undertaking. Knowing that most of your efforts will be futile and yet you continue to try. My hat is off to you sir.

So here I am giving you an opinion that you are not really allowed to agree with, even if you do.
History is a vital subject, possibly one of the most vital. Because as you well know, if we do not learn from our past mistakes...

Yeah, I do understand this. But the world is a cruel place and not just for humans. Yesterday, during office hours, a student and I were talking about the whole global warming debate. And as I told him, the Earth has been around billions of years before us. Human existence, human industrial existence, would be the equivalent of a drop of water in an olympic-sized swimming pool. In the big scheme of things, we are nothing. And what really blew his mind is when I made a comment along the lines of "we are not essential to life on Earth. None of us is irreplaceable. Even within our own lifespan, once we die, the world continues around us..."

Your comments about the youth in the world, or at least the Western world, is pretty close to what I observe. It is natural for a young person to be driven by emotion. And that's where the West has messed up is the silencing of the voice of reason which comes from the older generations. Reason without passion is hopeless. Emotions without reason are dangerous. The two work together to bring balance.

      Quote

In truth, one can make a very comfortable living and gain wealth in a trade based job.

And the lie about "one must have a degree..." yeah, it's true, if you intend to keep universities financially solvent on the backs of the student. I often get both official and unofficial warnings from the university administration because of the way I advise students. I am honest with them - if they are not doing well in their classes, I ask what they are interested in. Some are more hands-on, and I do my best to match them with a career path which will fit what they enjoy doing. In my mind, if you enjoy your job, you get paid to play. And that's important.

Yeah, the Ph.D. wasn't cheap and while it does impress some, it does not buy much more than did my high school diploma. And you're right about the respect. I have a few former students who keep in touch; one had me when I first started teaching at the university level in 2004. But it is for more than the degree they respect me. It is because of who I am. The degree may open the door, but if I am a horse's rear end, there's no respect.

I hear you, I think the local plumber I use is more financially well-off than I am. But hey, I do enjoy, most days, what I do.

@adsii1970 I dislike part mods; they turn my save hostage to the parts.

I'm currently using around 15-20 mods (used to be 60-70 around .90), and the only ones I'm waiting to come out are FAR and Strategia! I must say I'm pretty satisfied with 1.2 :)

  10. Earlier on one of the three Facebook KSP groups I belong to, a member of one of them asked me for mission ideas for the Sandbox mode. While I am not sure I would want to make it into a thread, unless you folks think it would be a good idea, I could just post them as status updates here.

I HAVE NOT BEEN APPROACHED BY ANYONE ON THIS FORUM ABOUT BECOMING A MODERATOR

The moderation team has its own criteria for selecting moderators. If you look above my dots, it clearly does not say MODERATOR, it says MEMBER, or some other thing... but definitely not MODERATOR. @NSEP: to me, it is cheating. I'll give you one of my favorites from the 1970s - Jim Croce. On one of his records (I know own the CD release of it, too), you can hear him playing his guitar and right in the middle of the song, you hear the sound that every guitar player hates to hear... *POOOINGGG* as a string breaks... In today's music, that would have been digitally removed - edited out for the sake of a "perfect take", but in the 1970s, accidents like that remain - and even with the imperfections, they have more character. To me, today's music that depends on auto-tune is to music what Wal-Mart is to an old fashioned department store...

  14. The level of conspiracy theories and nuts never seem to know no end at all.

On an exam for an on-line class I teach about the U.S. in World War II, a short essay question simply asked what were some of the factors for U.S. involvement in World War II... and unfortunately I am not teasing you.

I had a student actually submit this response:

    Quote

Roosevelt and the Republicans in Congress saw the war for a way for the United States to steal more land and resources from both Europe and Asia. So Roosevelt ordered an attack on Pearl Harbor, very similar to the Japanese Mukden incident in 1931 to gain support for his and the Republican war effort. This class may teach the fake facts that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, but the intelligent should be able to see through the lies. It was Republican propaganda put in place by a republican congress, and at the order of a republican president.

    Yeah, um, ok...

  16. A public service announcement about animated GIFs and photosensitivity:

Until today, I have been relatively secretive about a topic near and dear to my heart. While I have, in the past, made an effort not to be offensive or demanding in the past, I have also neglected my responsibilities to speak out for the few forum users, and myself, who have a health condition which is triggered or made worse by animated GIFs that rapidly change colors or brightness.

Photosensitivity, in its purest definition, is the noun form of an adjective, photosensitive. And until the mid 1980s, most of the people who were regarded as photosensitive were those who had a physical reaction to sunlight and ultraviolet light.1 But by the mid-1990s, and thanks to the continued development of personal computers, there was a new condition where photosensitivity took on another form - it caused a physical and/or mental reaction when certain light types and stimuli are present.2 We now know more about photosensitive epilepsy now than we did in the mid-twentieth century. While the exact numbers are unknown it is expected that nearly 5% of those who have epilepsy may have seizures triggered by visual stimuli.

I do not have epilepsy but I do have chronic hemiplegic migraines. In recent years, I have developed a photosensitive component to my migraines. While I do not have epilepsy nor any of the markers which aid in the diagnosis of epilepsy, the photosensitive component is very real.3 While I do not experience an externally visible seizure, nevertheless, the very nature of a hemiplegic migraine will trigger a reaction that is best described as a combination between a seizure and a Transient ischemic attack (TIA).4 In my own experiences, I have had seven such episodes since January 2021. Of the seven, six have been triggered by GIFs shared on forums, such as this forum and Simtropolis.

I have been hesitant to share any of this publicly and did allow a few other members of the moderation team in on this problem I have. This is the first time I have shared on any of the forums where I am a member of that I have this problem. Yes, there are times the GIFs do not bother me; there are times the GIFs will trigger an episode and usually it is when I have already had a migraine that has lasted longer than three days and on a scale of 1 through ten, the pain level has been about a five or higher.

The GIFs that are the worst offenders all have a singular feature - they flash from light to dark colors at an extremely fast rate of speed.  So, with that said, while I do not wish for the moderation team to become the GIF-gestapo, I do ask that for the sake of those of us who do experience photosensitivity, a little caution and self-reflection be applied when sharing GIFs. By all means, continue to share whatever image desired, but maybe tone down the animated GIFs that change and are designed to emulate flashing lights. :)

  17. Well, it's been a busy day.

I applied for an on-line instructor position at a East Coast university (for certain reasons, I cannot say which one). Anyhow, one of the things that was recommended is to set up a web page so that if hired, students could visit and get a good idea of my interests, hobbies, and the kinds of things I do in my spare time. With that said, I've set one up and immediately knew what I wanted the url to be: www.adsii1970.us.

It's not much, but I think it does a pretty good job of explaining, if possible, who I am...

I'll gladly take recommendations from y'all if I thik they will make it better...

@Dman979 and @Castille7: I played around with the fonts and think I have found a combination I like. It seems to be easy on the eyes and, well, I'll let you two be the judge of the results!

@Urses: Not a problem... I don't mind you following me around. There are a few that I've chased around the forum, mainly to learn various aspects of the game from them. Remember, this is a new site - and a bulk of the setup was done over the last two days. Over time, I will add more to the site...

  18. Helpful advice when you need your professor's help...

Never make the decision to call your professor at 3:30 a.m. to discuss your grade. There is a good chance if you weren't failing before the phone call, you've guaranteed a lower grade in the course. Why? Because it's hard to be impartial or unbiased in grading knowing your paper was already a week late and you woke your professor up to discuss your need to pass the class.

And it does not help to call your professor back at 10:30 a.m. to ask them if they've graded said late paper...

  20. Not a fun day.

Each evening, I spend about thirty minutes planning what things need to be done the next day. Today was going to be a productive day. I had some writing projects to grade, was going to write a chapter on Kerny's Journal, and do some laundry. But then life took a different direction.

Yesterday afternoon, while leaving campus, I was bumped off a set of outside stairs by one of our groundskeepers. He didn't realize I was behind him as he turned around. To avoid being hit with a weed-eater, I took a step backward and ended up slipping off the stairs. I felt something in my ankle pop, but other than that, nothing seemed wrong.

This morning, I woke up, and my ankle was tender to the touch and swollen. Called my doctor and got an appointment for earlier this afternoon. But, not wanting to be slowed down by the ankle, I put on compression socks and kept trucking, doing things on my to-do list. By noontime, my ankle was pretty sore, no discoloration, but swollen. I had to take the rest of the afternoon off.

Well, I am back home after the doctor's office. My "it's nothing to worry about" was wrong. I sprained my ankle. Oh, joy and fun.

I think it depends on what mods you're working around. I'm waiting on 2: OPM/Koperikus and Texture replacer. I could work around OPM, but I just made a bunch of new suits, so I have to wait on Texture replacer.

And I'll call all of these great comedians and raise all of you a... Duckfather!!!  :sticktongue:

Yes, it did. I just replied to the thread and am thinking about assembling it as a two course spread. I don't like the idea of popping into manned spaceflight without any sort of pretext. Many of the comments were really moving and I could sense the passion of many about space exploration.

The only problem is the disconnect most have between space exploration and spaceflight. These go hand in hand and in my mind, you cannot have one without the other.

      Oh, and got you back...

      Jebediah needs a sledge-o-matic!

Mainly Fengist's Maritime Parts mod. I could go forward right now in 1.2 but would have to recall my ships. I currently have five out right now... with two crewed with 10 Kerbals each. I do have 1.1.3 on the desktop, so I could still do it in the previous version and simply wait for the mod.

OPM is later down the road in my narrative. I will say that 1.2 has some really nice things going on, although most of my aircraft fly pretty crappy now.

  22. An interesting article. Thought I would share it...

Scientists see evidence of an ancient tsunami on Mars

    Highlight excerpt:

A new study suggests that ancient Mars not only had an ocean, it experienced a tsunami unlike anything we've seen on Earth, reports Cosmos. The study in the Journal of Geophysical Research—Planets identifies a 75-mile-wide crater in the north as the likely source, reports the BBC.(Source: Fox News)

@Urses: There's a term for what I was describing, but I cannot find it or remember it. Your hypothesis of atmospheric loss may not be correct according to current data available from NASA/JPL:

      http://newsquench.com/article.php?n=nasa-says-asteroid-impacts-could-have-caused-mars-present-climate&id=122467

      and:

      http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2013/pdf/2608.pdf

If you read the second article, they suspect Earth also lost a good portion of its atmosphere...

The tsunami generated by the meteor impact on Mars was huge. I still think it lost most of its atmosphere in the aftermath of that impact.

  23. Things to do today:

    • Update the "Legends in our own minds" thread. I haven't done that in a while.
    • Pester @Dman979. I haven't done that in a while, either.
    • Try to figure out what I am doing wrong with my shuttle. I lose control once I've made it beyond the plasma.
    • Work on grading some assignments students have already submitted.
    • Work on some requested images for forum members.
    • Pester @Angel-125 regarding a part. Hehehe....
    • Drink more coffee...
    • Work on my Nohochacyum mod. I need to add the rest of the roughed planets, address the light curve issue, and try to figure out the asteroid thing.

@Angel-125: Yes, it does, but I need to go in and redo the light curves so the light is more realistic. Right now, I have three of the planets roughed out (put into an orbit). I have two more planets and then the moons to rough in before the next release.  :D It is a work in progress and I'm a much slower mod builder than you!

And the "ruh roh"? It might be an easy fix; you're more talented than I am. In the release of the DSEV cargo bays, how hard would it be to have them be roll-back doors, as you have with the Heisenberg Airships mod cargo bay, rather than hinged doors? In the tight space I am working in, the roll-back doors would work well. :D

      adsii1970

      @Angel-125:

I'm not worried too much about it. It will be a while before I can actually use the part. Right now, I am trying to figure out which pesky mod is causing my 1.3.1 to crash. I have two different installs of 1.3.1 -

      • the one I am using to edit Nohochacyum -
        • I have been told those who are still using older versions of KSP should be able to use it as long as they have the Kopernicus updated for their particular version.
        • I am going to have to get good at creating terrain maps for the planets. If anyone want to lend a hand, I will gladly list you as a co-writer of the mod in the OP.
      • and the one I am trying to upgrade Kerny's saved game to.
        • I am going to delete some of the mods I rarely use just so I do not have to keep them updated.
        • I have another mod I will need to update that's under my maintenance - InflightFlagSwitcher. Now I just have to remember the steps to get everything updated.

  25. Quote of the day:

raffael-plato.jpg"Astronomy compels the soul to look upward, and leads us from this world to another."

    Plato (427-347BCE)

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plato was the innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms in philosophy. Plato appears to have been the founder of Western political philosophy , with his Republic , and Laws among other dialogues, providing some of the earliest extant treatments of political questions from a philosophical perspective. Plato's own most decisive philosophical influences are usually thought to have been Socrates, Parmenides , Heraclitus and Pythagoras , although few of his predecessors' works remain extant and much of what we know about these figures today derives from Plato himself.
