1. Pfft. I wish. The KSP Community doesn't count as helping my community I don't think. Especially since SQUAD is a Mexican company. I would be helping Mexico instead of America. Which I don't think counts as a service project. :sticktongue:

Endersmens, Endersmens, such a narrow world view...

By helping with the forum, you are contributing to the GLOBAL KSP community... so your "vision" is beyond the concept of nation, but the brotherhood of mankind... Just food for thought

  2. Aaaaand THIS is why the KSP forum fan base is so awesome XD

Reading these last few pages is hilarious. Be it in a strange sort of way. ^-^

I agree totally. And I will admit, I have had the "sour grapes" attitude, too  when it comes to the rep points. Although I would love to get into the light green group, I am just glad now that I cannot get any lower than what I already have...

  3. Does anyone know what kinds of things windows ten breaks?

    Does everything on steam work?

I've had pretty good success with the rollout of Windows 10. So far, no problems with the major programs I use for fun or for work, and yes, this includes Steam.

  4. I think that what Dr. Hawking means is, with the current state of technology, we do not have the means to run into other aliens. They will run into us, because it's certainly not up to our technology to search, find and encounter other civilisations. Hence, when there's contact with aliens, we're going to be the primitives and they're going to be explorers who discover us.

That's the Carl Sagan angle. For an alien race to be able to reach us, their technology is way more advanced than ours (doh). And their ability to destroy themselves in the process is also way more advanced. So, for an alien race to have the ability to reach other star systems, they must have weeded out aggression a long time ago or they would have destroyed themselves before they were able to reach the stars.

Personally I tend to go with Sagan. What would be the point for aliens to go to war with a bunch of primitives?

    • Resources? They can just take it from the outer planets or other solar systems. Earth is not a unique source of resources, I think
    • Slaves? As if you need manual labor when you have the technology to travel between stars.
    • Evil? They'd succumbed to civil war a long time ago

The only reason they'd have to destroy us, is as a pre-emptive strike to prevent us from ruling over them, somewhere in the future.

What about a combined Sagan/Hawking approach? You raise a couple of great points...

At one point in early space exploration history, the thought was that water was rare. We now know it is literally everywhere and in every form all through the universe. There is now speculation that the so called "rare earth metals" may not be so rare outside of Earth. This is one thought driving the current commercial interest in the harvesting/mining of asteroids. I imagine that any advanced space traveling civilization would possess the means to gather the basic elements while on the fly...

I imagine that we would probably see the use of technology in almost every conceivable area of manual work - UNLESS they subscribe to the current theory that some of our enlightened thinkers, again conjuring Stephen Hawking, on the innate fear of technology replacing biology. Ray Kurzweil theorized about the idea of technology actually ruling over us (not to mention being incorporated within our biology) as one of the great next developments of human evolution. He calls it the "great singularity" and he is not the only one that has speculated about this. Some sci-fi writers, such as Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke focused on the idea of humans becoming subservient to technology...

Depends on what their version of "evil" is. For example, I think that anything "Hello Kitty!" is evil...

Just like humans are not enslaving other species for food, work or entertainment?

    Darwinism...

[edit] Ah, a mix of both ideas... a "we don't know" as the real answer? ;) [/edit] There are symbioses and other animals that share resources and work together. There are many examples in nature where larger/different (advanced/complex are the wrong words to use) animals that depend on each other and work together. The more intelligent, the more likely for them to check before eating the other animal ("dumb" fish just gobble up anything near them :P ).

Yes, that's all I've been saying. Stephen Hawking does not have all the answers and there are plenty out there that could be just as viable as his. I hate it when any news or information outlet will focus on speculation from one "expert" who essentially then becomes the standard at the expense of all other probable theories...

  5. All your assumptions are equally valid to dr. Hawking's. He on the other hand has most likely thought about them a little more than you.

    1. Yes, it's possible humanity is currently the highest developed species in the universe. However looking at the age of human society compared to the age of the universe it's highly unlikely.

2./3. Any dominant species is most likely descendent from a predatory species. A prey species will almost never dominate its environment. We can only hope a more developed species has the emotional maturity to have overcome their predatory instincts.

Actually, I've been pondering this since I first became interested in astronomy and related sciences since I was eight. The problem I have with the media focus on Hawking is that yes, the man is smart; however, there are many theories out there that deserve equal attention if we are truly going to have an academic discussion on the possibility of intelligent alien life. I proposed the current topic as a means to generate such discussion here in this forum, where I believe it could truly be an interesting and challenging discussion...

    1. In the defense of humanity, most of our technological advancements happens in great spurts (for lack of a better term), the most recent being the miniaturization of technology we are currently witnessing and the increased micro-processing power of computers (we are nearing a stall point in computer technology according to some experts). These spurts are normally the outcropping of our volatile nature (even here in KSP, how long was it before the various armed mods began creeping into the game? :) ). Even if we just take the American Civil War, there were great advancements made in medicine, weaponry (Gatling Gun, Dirigibles as combat vehicles, submarines, ironclads, brass cartridges, and the repeating rifle), photography, and transportation. I would suspect if we did come into contact with a superior species through radio communications (such as SETI), we would undoubtedly begin to contemplate newer technologies and tactics to neutralize any perceived threat.

    2. Not necessarily - one thing that the colonization of the New World has taught us is that genetics contains the key. There have been great strides in figuring out where various populations of peoples originated from based on the human genome. Now, I will admit I mainly threw out this point for the sole purpose of trying to generate discussion... but it does have some interesting ideas. What if xeno-human settlement occurred where a native humanoid species already existed and interbreeding occurred for a number of reasons (biological diversity for future generations to be able to survive within the biological conditions of the new home being one of these) as suggested in the SyFy Channel remake of Battlestar Galactica? Do not get me wrong, I am not saying the SyFy Channel is going to promote strong science (Sharknado, yeah, historical documentary on global climate change?:D ) however, the idea that a superior or advanced form of life would forsake technology as a means of ensuring survival is a common sci-fi theme for those, such as Issac Asimov, who saw the dangers of rampant technology usage.

    3. I agree with you with the consideration of Darwinism into the alien life equation - but would throw out the possibility of a prey species forced to become technologically advanced. As is witnessed in Earth's biodiversity, there are creatures that have evolved defensive mechanisms (coloration, horns, chemical smells/poisons) to deter attacks by predators. Imagine if a planet had the development of a sentient organism that had been historically prey (I kind of think Kerbals here  ). At some point, it would allow for the development of technology for a totally different purpose than for conquest (but would still be able to use such technology for an offensive purpose). One of the reasons I enjoyed Star Trek Voyager was because there were a few episodes that actually dealt with this sort of idea. Ideally, it would be one of these types of alien civilizations we would want to come into contact with...otherwise...

  6. A few days ago, while reading an article on Space.com, there was an article about Dr. Stephen Hawking's latest statement regarding the possibility of alien life. In short, he said that if we do encounter life in space, it will be much more technologically advanced, would probably seek to conquer us, but we should seek it out nonetheless. I found his statement to be presumptuous at best for a few reasons:

    1. What about if us - on earth - are the most technologically advanced? Yes, I know the earth is not that old but what if...? Surely there is room in the scientific community to inquire into this possibility.

    2. What if we are actually the descendants of a space-faring species, much like is written in Issac Asimov's Foundation series? What if human life did begin on another world, much like the prelude on the original Battlestar Galactica series from 1979... If this is the case, then it is possible that the advanced life out there would not see us as a species to be conquered, but as a colony to be refined to its fullest potential. The question would then become "what is our true purpose."

    3. Hawking places the teachings of Charles Darwin in the driver's seat; the idea that a superior organism would use its abilities to conquer lesser organisms is a part of the natural world BUT... any advanced organism would have similar traits of curiosity, compassion, etc. Not all would be ALIEN-like predators or bent on the enslavement of humanity.

There are more possibilities than what Dr. Hawking proposes; what I want to know is how does he become a xeno-species expert?

  7. I have now upgraded to Windows 10. So far, as far as performance goes, I find the experience actually fairly decent. I use a lot of programs (SPSS, VideoPad Video Editor, Audacity) besides KSP and Cities: Skylines that can really tax system resources. So far, Windows 10 seems to be handling it...

  8. I am so confused at this. Would you mind explaining?
Well the short answer, it's run by people with money and if you don't have money you better be on the good side of the guy who does.

    I wasn't.

Early in my life, I knew what I wanted to do and on that list was I wanted to be a professional with the Boy Scouts. I did serve as a "unit serving executive" for six years and left disillusioned. As of December 2011, I severed all ties with the B.S.A.

As a volunteer, I had no problems. I had been a volunteer from 1988 to 2011 with two three-year terms as a professional. In my volunteer capacity, I served as Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner, Assistant District Commissioner, an Assistant Council Commissioner, member of an executive board, a Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and a Merit Badge Counselor. I loved what I did. Yes, I was a "knotter Scouter" and by the time I left Scouting I had four rows of knots, four knots were earned as a youth (Eagle Scout, Explorer Achievement Award, Arrow of Light, and Religious Emblem).

As a professional, it became all about the numbers - and what was really sad is that the council I was employed by was extremely "top heavy" where nearly all the funding we raised (as much as 60%) went to staff salaries and not into the program. I also worked 80 hour weeks, often paid for Scouts who could could not afford to pay for their registration or to attend key events. Over the years I have been awarded a number of recognitions for something that became a life-calling...

  9. Well, I don't have any pictures for this but about a week ago, I decided I would no longer use the WARP feature. I would simply play the game in real time. As of right now, it has taken my brave crew of three Kerbals five days to achieve Münar orbit. Yes, it has made the game painfully slow and makes every maneuver more carefully planned... because the chance to try again after a blown maneuver could make the mission more challenging or even impossible... :)

  10. Do you use CKAN? I've seen many modders saying that they won't support CKAN installs, and only recently I've discovered why: it does not do a great job at cleaning a previous version of a mod when it updates. So, files which don't exist from one version of another, of which were moved from one folder to another on version change, may still linger in your install if you update from CKAN, and these old files may end up raising all kinds of hell in your install.

I uninstall the old mod through CKAN and once it has been removed, I check the box to add the new edition... It works for me so far.

  11. Sorry for the lack of replies over the weekend guys! I erm um totally lost the weekend and yesterday eve to playing Elite Dangerous!!

I can see a couple things wrong with your sig's syntax...

    Try using this;

This craft was constructed on a computer with the following system specifications:

Operating system: Windows 8.1; Processor: AMD E2-1800 APU with Raedon HD Graphics 1.7GHz; Installed RAM: 8.0 GB; System type: 64 bit operating system, x64 based processor

Note: to make it so that the green text starts on a new line (rather than a new paragraph which puts a bigger space between the lines). put a return at the end of the green text line and two spaces. the two spaces are important, that tells markdown to make a new line. Or you can put multiple returns in so there is a blank line between the text and that will be interpreted as a new paragraph.

oh points! yeah, I'd kinda forgotten about putting points on the profile page, thanks for the reminder!

i'd sort of lost interest in the whole points system because no one upvotes, or at least very few people upvote things. Which I'm kinda surprised by, I thought people would be upvoting lots! Is the upvote system still unapparent?

I'm sure at some point, someone will do something that requires moderating. At the moment I'm the moderator, and I do look at each craft page that is posted (I don't download all the craft though). At some point I will need others to help with moderation tasks.

Anyway, points. I will add the running total and a break down of points on the profile page. I think it will be that other users viewing your profile will just see the total, the break down of your points is only seen by you.

I will add that in soon.

    adsii1970, you have 9 craft on there! -> http://kerbalx.com/adsii1970

Thanks for the pointers. I followed the advice; I think the signature description about the system I am using to design my craft will work nicely.

I'm kinda OCD and often check in on my stats twice a day. If you need help moderating that group, I will be glad to help in any way possible...

  12. You are most welcome good Sir!

So, DB upgrade all went well, didn't actually take too long to migrate it over. Glad that you can notice the speed increase, but the site was being really sluggish before so anything would have been better!

What I could do (which might have other benefits too) is to allow you to write any text description to go with a mod-pack. Then you can write whatever you like in it, comp-specs, description of intent...whatever. But your point has also made me think about allowing the CKAN download to be adjustable by whoever is downloading it. So for example if I created a mod pack with A,B and C mods, but you didn't want C, then you could un-check it before download. That adds a bit of complication so I'll ponder it while I get the other mod pack features working.

This morning after doing some much needed grading for my online college course, I had a brainstorm. I simply took the craft signature space, removed the tag I had, and replaced it with system specs. I tried to make the text smaller using the correct GITHUB format, as specified in the help documents you provided, but the tags did not seem to do any good. Anyhow, take a few moments and take a peek!

  13. I have to turn off KSP's music because it's exactly the kind of ambient throb that gets into my brain and keeps me awake at night :(

Yes, there are/were other games that do the same thing to me. Simcity 3000 had that funky song at startup and occasionally through the game. Then there is the theme from the Mario Brothers franchise that sticks in the brain. During my comprehensive exams for my degree, I remember staring at the wall and hearing the music to Tetris... :( With that said, I do enjoy the game so much AND the music that comes with it, I leave it on...

It would be really cool if KSP would play different music for different planetary bodies (or even based upon your situation). It could really set the mood for some missions.

I agree. I would love to see them use what I believe would be the most appropriate out there - Gustav Holst - The Planets.

Having provided music to short films and multimedia projects, I think the people at Squad did a great job and made good choices with the game's soundtrack, the two highlights being, in my opinion, the title theme (which captures that Right Stuff feeling in an efficient MIDI-ish, childlike-fun way), and the ambient track when a vessel reaches space.

    You're exactly right...

Now I'm pretty sure they are aware that making an everlastingly listened soundtrack for a game like Kerbal Space Program would be difficult. The game is slow, played many times, the tracks are heard over and over again. And it is a sandbox game, it puts the emphasis on its user's creativity and feelings of appropriation : people build their very own vessels, people mod it, etc. So it's no surprise that at some point, its soundtrack gets customized as well.

More tracks, different ones for each celestial body, for night time and day time, even for each biome would surely be enchanting. But I feel that due to the nature of the game, and after being heard over and over again, it would lead to the same result : people would start cooking their own earfood.

Writing this made me think of that very clever tool Maxxi put in Spore. Spore was also about its user's intimate experience, - letting him build his own stuff -, but they implemented an easy-to-use 4-track sequencer, that allowed the player to customize the music of his planets. I think there were two tracks for background ambiences (offering a choice of presets), one for the rhythm, and the last one was the melodic line, which could be programmed. Tempo control, the possibility to mute tracks, and a set of basic sounds for the melodic line were also available.

It was neat and very enjoyable.

    Cheers

Maxis did that with SimCity 4, then included that feature in The Sims, although it was buried within the configuration settings menu. I actually uploaded my own playlist into SC4 using that function and included songs like Jefferson Starship's We Built this City, John Cougar Mellencamp's song, Pink Houses, and Men at Work, "Who Can it Be Now?" and "Land Down Under". Yeah, I had a bunch of other songs but those were the ones I just happened to remember.

I find this music perfect for this game, I have played for hundreds of hours and still cant get enough of it. And if I got cut off from KSP for couple days I start to listen to track 03 :)

    I agree totally!

  14. Should also include a couple other minor new features; search by .ckan metapackage files and (rudimentary) mod-packs.

    - If you use CKAN to install your mods, you'll be able to go to your CKAN folder, grab the installed-default.ckan file from there and drop it on the site and KX will find craft that are compatible with your mod setup.

    - Mod-packs are custom groups of mods that you can create and either load into the search (ie if you have a couple different mod setup, create a mod pack for each one and be able to quickly search for craft for either setup) or you can share them with others and they'll see a list of your mods and be able to download a .ckan file to tell their CKAN to install those mods. These are just in their basic form right now, need quite a bit more work but the basic bits are in place so I may as well release that and updates will follow.

The sharing aspect is kinda the main point of these. Instead of always having to write down what mods you use, just post a link to your mod-pack on KerbalX and as you change your mod setup just update it in one place.

This sounds like some pretty awesome updates! I cannot wait to see them put into action. I love the idea of having a downloadable CKAN file; The only problem is that I use an older computer, so I would be hesitant to download someone else's CKAN file because of the prospect of crashing KSP. I'd like to make a proposal:

On the user profile page, have a section that lists specifics about the computer the craft was designed on. For example, you could include the following information. I have used my system specifics in this:

    -- Operating system: Windows 8.1

-- Processor: AMD E2-1800 APU with Raedon HD Graphics 1.7GHz

    -- Installed RAM: 8.0 GB

-- System Type: 64 bit operating system, x64 based processor

This way, if someone wants my CKAN list, they can understand the basic system resources I am using to run KSP. If they had 4 GB of RAM, then they would probably not want to use my list...

    Just an idea...

  15. Fixed, made a mistake. Try now.

Sorry, still do not see the poll...

    It felt dirty just voting.

I would rather feel dirty voting than to not wipe and go commando...

Why the hell would you want to stand while you do this?! By standing up you close your buttcheeks and that can make things messy. Ew. Stay sitting like a normal person.

Good observation; I also carry a single wet wipe in my wallet for those rare times when rest area toilet paper just doesn't seem to be enough. Wet wipes, never travel without them!

This is the strangest poll I've ever seen on the forum. :P

Stick around for a while - there are some stranger than this...

Sock sock shoe shoe, or sock shoe sock shoe? :P

Nope, sock, sock, then shoe, shoe. Even with sandals, I wear socks... I was raised in Germany and that's how I roll... :P
