  1. The only way I would think that a VS mode in a multi-player situation would work for ksp is two competing space agencies. Ie a contract goes out to put a Grav detector in this crater on the Mun, which ever agency gets there first gets the reward. Inter-planetary missions would be especially hard to do since both teams have to worry about launch windows.. Weapons are a no go and perhaps there could be a setting which made it so that any collisions amongst players caused both teams to loose.
  2. I love the idea of probes having a use, along with cameras, mapping, etc all sound like good ideas. However, I would like to see the Mapping tool as something less passive and more interactive. I would like to see the mapping module have the ability to only map in a 10deg arc so that in order to create the perfect map with out gaps one would have to make at least 36 orbital inclination changes. Also to represent the probe scanning only a small portion of that 10deg arc it should take ten (or x amount of) orbits to complete one section. So really next we need a why, science, money, and or reputation would be good things to get out of this complicated process. However, a tool for mission planning should be the ultimate aim of any mapping project. The current map in the game is only so zoom-able and doesn't contain any information about bio-mes or anomalies like the lunar arch. A mapping project should give you a high resolution (as opposed to the current low res 3d map currently available in flight) 3d map that you can zoom in on so close you can see the anomalies (if you know where to look) but also find perfect base placement amongst several bio-mes. This high res map would only be available at the space center mission control. Cameras are something interesting, because you want to create photo albums like Nasa does but at the same time this is a game. Photos shouldn't be spammed in the name of science. Certain players will only take one picture of each thing like a checklist to milk the most science out of each mission. I know I would probably do it too. Yes photos are clearly scientific in nature from plain visible light photos to radio wave photo representations they provide a wealth of scientific knowledge. Photos should have two uses game play wise. One is purely about gaining scientific knowledge. The other is to bring our community together by sharing our missions with each other. The same is true about the real world, these photos bring humanity together in triumph and tragedy. So I suggest a collective photo bank in mission control that allows us to follow your triumphs and tragedies (if you post them to the service) and players can vote on pictures/stories they like the best for a small reward of money, and the highest voted pictures get varying amounts of reputation. As far as telescopes go, well I can't think of a use for them outside of discovering new planets, potential warnings of meteorites/asteroids, or gaining science from studying stars (but that last one seems a bit out of scope of this game since we will never be able to go there (un modded).
  3. First off I think people need to be clear on terms. Boats and Ships are two separate things. A boat is any vessel small enough to be transported by a ship. Usually under 100ft in length. A ship is anything over that. What most people are against are ship parts. While most people here that are advocating boat parts are advocating for just that, small parts that are used to create small vessels to explore the seas. I support any part that helps us explore. Boat parts should be included in the game so they could be used like rovers. Ship parts if included in the game should be used similarly to Bases or Space Stations. Also for the people who are citing that NASA does not build boats, ships, or have an interest in maritime tech; NASA has never built a base on another planet. Yet those are in the game. NASA has not built space stations around other planetary bodies and yet this is something which we can do in this game. The only reason why NASA hasn't built boats is because they have not had the need, money, resources, and ability to do so; but if they had the space program with the seemingly inexhaustible supplies that the Kerbals do they would build boats. In fact they are starting to because of Titan and Europa, but these things will be years off just like any space station around Mars or base on Io. If they are added to the game and in career mode then I would suggest that they be expensive and high up on the tech tree to represent the complexities of. (insert strange announcer voice here) Boats in in in Space Space Space...
  4. I love rovers, and I totally think rovers need some love.... err... wait um that could have come out better. Anyways I love the idea of an RAA and possibly a proving ground, like the one NASA uses near the Prius Battery plant, so that we can see how it will handle on various terrain features even if it is only still in Kerbal gravity. Fold-able wheels, retractable parts, and ways to store them on rockets, space planes, and bases would be great. Tweekable suspension is another great idea as well. A winch might also be a nice part to make, one kerbal gets out and runs out with cable and stakes it into the ground while the other turns it on; depending on where you put the winch and the direction of pull it should be able to right the rover. Also some basic rover chassis might be nice too.
  5. I landed on the Mun the other day and I was greeted by wreckage of previous flights to the Mun. Now I know I simply can X out all the debris I leave behind. However, I thought of a more interesting idea. So staring at all this debris I suddenly was inspired by the movie Flight of the Phoenix, with Jimmy Stewart, not the remake. Anyways, I think it might be interesting if on certain low gravity worlds the Kerbals can re purpose the parts and either create new creations, or use the parts to repair damage done on landing. The only restriction would be how heavy the parts are and how much a Kerbal can lift, or tools brought in for that purpose ie a crane. Later on as resources become instituted perhaps a Station/ Base part could be used to melt down and recycle said parts or store them for transport to KSC for recycling.
  6. Zero! unless you count my first probe. The "Heavy POS Mk1" is currently in orbit around Kerbin with lots of fuel on-board and no, nada, zero, zilch, power on-board, and no solar panels. Nor have I crashed on my multiple landings on the moons (still new), although I can't say the same for a probe I landed on the Mun, which had just enough fuel to get it high enough to fall straight back to the Mun and destroy it self.
  7. Space stations are a monumental feat in engineering, so the OP is correct that it seems silly that space stations don't add much to the science given the amount that is needed to make them. Space stations though aren't useless pieces of flotsam. They serve as orbital transfer points, and fuel depots. The problem is Space stations should have multiple uses and either you should be forced to build a smaller specialized station for one of the two uses mentioned above or possibly an orbital zero g-laboratory or a zero g-factory. Since what the OP is commenting on is science I will focus my ideas and concepts there. First, a new space station/base module should be introduced. This module should eat power and a small amount of fuel for all the Bunsen burners. Also, It should require scientist crew members to man the module. The reason for this is that either a small specialized station for science only can be built, forcing a player to make a choice. Do I use my crew quarters to hold scientist or pilots? Do I use the large fuel tank to supply outgoing rockets to far flung destinations or do I use it to fuel my Bunsen burners? With out any of the these resources the experiments stop. Thus partially avoiding the time warp issue, if you time warp to fast you'll just have to do a resupply mission to refill the stations fuel supply. But wait that's not all, there's more. Labs shouldn't directly generate science, they should be generating data. Which either can be transmitted to the surface of Kerbin, for a massive reduction in the potential science. The packets of data should be huge, so that with the lab running it would be a huge drain on the electrical system to transmit this data and run the lab. So a data storage device with the information gained by the scientist on the station would need to be sent down and recovered. Viola science points. Also I think the rate of science created should be highest at the altitude that allows only physical time warp and lowest on the surface (with samples from EVA's giving a boost to the rate, and samples from further bodies giving more of a boost) and lower as the time warp capabilities open up. So basically the lowest point for these labs functionality would be on the surface, and in high orbit.
