  1. Today, I encountered an unusually high number of adorable things. Now I am temporarily happy. I remember being at a big scout event, and the ISS went overhead in the middle of a speech being given by an astronaut. I swear they planned it but I know they probably didn't. The whole world needs to switch to the East Asian way of doing things and write it YYYY/MM/DD. Seriously, though, I always write dates like "4 Oct 95," so that way at least mine are relatively unambiguous.
  2. The Kerbal who was given the name or title of "Jebediah Kerman" is one of the most experienced and high quality kerbonauts, on the grounds that he had played a key and instrumental role in the rescue/retrieval mission that was necessitated by an autonomous machine's malicious software experiment on the surface of that orbiting body known by the inhabitants of the planet Kerbin as "The Mun."
  3. Ok, so I've done some more research (taking cues from your replies ) and it looks like I was a bit confused about what I need. I'll use OpenGL for graphics, and SDL for window handling and input/output. So far I've actually got the beginning of the game logic running in python with plain ASCII, and it looks good so far: (It's shooting three sets of concentric circles, one slow dense set in the center, and two faster, sparser sets on the sides.) One of my primary interests is low level programming. One of the most fun things I've ever written was an ATAPI driver in 32 bit assembly, running on raw hardware. Trust me, I don't need it to be easy. Anyway, I'm going to go make myself an egg for brainfood, and then I'm going to start reading through documentation.
  4. Language is an agreement between people on a method of communication. Sometimes this agreement is written down and formalized. That usually doesn't stay valid very long, though, because most often the agreement is intangible and constantly evolving. The only primary pronunciation, syntax, meaning, or anything else is the one that is understood the best. As long as both /gɪf/ and /d͡ʒɪf/ are understood, neither is the primary or variant. Eventually, though, one will probably die out, and my money is on the survival of /g/.
  5. 6/10 - A bit too small, hard to tell what we're looking at. I like the color combination though; blue and yellow is nice.
  6. Isn't it pronounced /'wɛb.ɪm/?
  7. I'm not super experienced in C, so I've decided to write a project I've been wanting to do for a while in C. It's going to be a bullet shooter engine, which can interpret different scripts to make any number of unique games. Think RPG maker but for bullet shooters. Anyway, I want the finished product to look something like this: Nothing too fancy, just a bunch of 2D sprites, animations, and hitboxes, as well as some info on the side somewhere. I've figured out the logic of the main game loop, and it's all stuff I've done before, so the only challenge with that will be C syntax itself. Unfortunately, I have almost no experience in graphics programming. I want it to be cross-platform, so I've done some research, and it looks like OpenGL and SDL are good candidates. I'm leaning towards SDL, because I have no need for 3D and I don't mind working at a lower level. However, I wanted to see if anyone has any experience or recommendations on these two or anything else. So, in general, what is a good C library for creating 2D games?
  8. Whoa, who said gore was allowed in these threads? Mods, help?
  9. 2/10 not enough room for snacks. Or fuel. Or propulsion. Or life support. Or science.
  10. My username is the old callsign of a Russian military radio station that broadcasts 24/7. My picture changes frequently, right now its a cute picture of a happy Tsukasa.
  11. "Sr. Spacecraft Engineer," huh... I hate it. 8/10
  12. pretty sure there's a rule against roleplay on the forums.
  13. Right, but there's no need to actually live there to get it. If I had the resources to create a Mars colony, I would put most of the infrastructure and people in low orbit, and have ferries to go up and down to get whatever is needed from the surface, such as water, soil, ores, etc.
  14. Just started a new game with new players the other day. I think they got bored with making characters, but hopefully we can really pick it up next time. Hopefully they'll follow the skeleton into the dungeon, and have fun with the traps and stuff.
  15. This might have been asked before, but what is the most frequently posted in forum or subforum? What's the most frequently viewed?
  16. So, I know this discussion is about terraforming Mars and all, but what's the deal with wanting to live on that rock anyway? Like Green Baron said on page 1, the soil is poisonous, there's nothing to eat, drink, or breathe, and on top of those things, there is none of the ozone that protects us here on Earth. All things the same, wouldn't it be safer to build space stations in orbit? That would mean no fuel needed for landing/takeoff, no landing legs, no parachutes, no sanitation rooms, etc. And, we could make our own gravity a la 2001. Not to mention that there would basically be no size restraint. I think the only hazard that we would be more likely to encounter in orbit as opposed to the surface would be micrometeorites, but we already have experience with that. Given enough time, we could even add radiation shielding (or even create some from dirt brought up from below)
  17. I just finished reading a depressing story and now I'm sad. I knew it would have a bad end, but I didn't expect it to be that bad. What do I do now? What is the point of living anymore, when there's nothing left?
  18. 10/10 - I really like how simple it is, and that you centered it all. Good work.
  19. It looks like your command pod is facing the opposite direction. The navball is always from the point of view of the currently controlling part.
