  1. Maybe a noob question, but I'd like to know if its possible to use Mechjebs docking assistant and dock on a station on the surface while beeing in an orbit. Reason is because I want to build a grid like moon station with dockingpods on top and have ships and modules dock on the to, but I'm not good with landing at a certain point (closest so far is 1500 meter) so I'd like to let Mechjeb do the job (I might use a skycrane to get the modules onto the ground) Is it possible to tell mechjeb to land at the exact location of the docking pod and then dock? Thanks for all answeres
  2. Rendezvous and docking are one of the most complicated maneuvers in spaceflight and like some of you I was a beginner too and couldn't even make it to orbit. So one day I sat down. Ad I told. My. Self that I would prefect my rendezvous maneuver well it didn't go so well. Any way to get to the tutorial part. 1.Use The maneuver node system. It will help you a lot 2 depending on the orbit inclination you have to match the plane that the orbit is on so basically just match your inclination to your target. Skip this if you are in a perfect 0 deg Inc orbit. 3. Depending on where you target is and where you are depends on if you need to go above or below your targets orbit. 4. Using the maneuver nodes and you will have to spin the around to get the encounter so play with untill you ge either one blue marker or one orange and dark purple or pink node hover over one or the other depending on whether which one has a shorter separation distance and you can tweak the node more to give you a shorter distance and you may even have to delay the burn for a couple of orbits to get close once you have got this set up go ahead and make your burn 5. You are now on an intercept course switch your nav ball setting to target mode the only two nodes you will use from here on out is the retro grade, target, and the (Prograde only for docking alignment) when you have made your burn and switched to target mode align your craft to retrograde position. At the closest encounter fire the engine until your. Relative speed to target is close to zero or S < 1.0 m/s. 6. From here on out engage your rcs system and you will point target and use rcs to get closer or if your still a couple of kilometers away. Use your engine and switch from target to retro grade untill you are within 50-100 meters. Of your target. Docking tutorial. 1. If you haven't selected target mode on your nav ball then do so. 2. Select control from here on your docking port on Your Spacecraft and select target on the target's docking port now you will need to align the ports an docking mode would be more helpful for beginners so use this that way you won't misfire you engine you switch between translation and rotation. Once you are aligned then slowly move forward with rcs. Wait until it tries to just grab it like a magnet and disable sas and rcs cause sometimes it won't dock until you do. and that's all I hoped that this helped you and I will edit this later because I am at highschool right now and I promise to add pictures if I can. And please if you have any questions or comments regarding this tutorial please feel free to post a comment.
  3. I've tried everything I can think of, hence the docking window instead of the staging window being displayed, MechJeb being open, and unlimited RCS turned on... This is really confusing, I undocked this exact part of this ship from this space station mere minutes ago, now when I try to reattach, it just won't snap in place..and I realize I'm not 'exactly' lined up in this picture. That's just a result of the picture, I was perfectly lined up multiple times. Is this a bug? http://imgur.com/IUs4s2k http://imgur.com/a/yRDfx wut
  4. I propose two edits to help with docking: Make the intercept markers red when within 10km, yellow when in 5km, and green when in 1km. When within 10m of targeted docking port, there should be an option to auto-dock. That would really help save a LOT of time, since I have to constantly mess with the maneuver node, then hover over the intercept, then repeat to get the intercept right. Plus, the autodock would save HOURS of wasted time.
  5. Somehow, I can no longer see the position and range cue for my rendezvous target, even at close range. I have still been able to rendezvous by using the nav ball cues and the range tip in orbit view, but it is a little clumsy to go back and forth between the two views. I used to have the cue at ranges less than about 25k, and I don't know what happened to make it go away. I am using 1.0.2.842 (Mac), with Kerbal Engineer, Precise Node, and Alarm Clock. My tracking station and launch pad are fully upgraded, and VAB and R&D are at Level 2. I'd like to get the rendezvous aiming cue back.
  6. This is a pretty mesmerizing video so I wanted to share it with you.
  7. For the last couple of hours I've tried to dock a fuel ferry to the asteroid base I am building around Minmus, but the clamp-o-trons won't connect, even though I get a perfect fit on the Dock Align mod. I've tried docking the ferry to two different vessels on the asteroid. The two mods I have installed are MechJeb2-2.5.6.0 and DockingPortAlignment-6.2. and the version of the game is 1.0.5.1028 I've checked and double checked that all the ports are facing the right way. I've tried so many times I usually get a reasonably good fit every time. Tried on another vessel on the same asteroid - same result. The debug log keeps repeating the same line without any change when the two docking ports connect. What is going on? Do I suck so badly at docking or is it not my fault? Thanks for any help.
  8. I have started a space program called KiSS. The space station is fully made of stock parts. I had done the ascent and rendezvous myself but I got messed up during docking. So I installed MechJeb for the docking purpose. Currently the space station comprises of 2 parts:KSS1(the crew habitat)and a KSS-node(for docking other parts of the space station). Stay tuned I will be uploading the images soon. You can reply me if you want the save game or give me some innovative ideas.
  9. I docked for the for the first time in the game.I ve been playing the game for like 2 years but i couldn't dock.I saw Scott Manley's Tutorial and tried and guess what,It was a success.
  10. The basics of getting those two annoying ships together, painlessly.
  11. hi i am trying to learn how to dock. i have done the in game tutorial but when i tried it in my career mode, and when i burn retrograde to slow down my interception node changes. is there a way to avoid this?
  12. So I've been trying to tackle docking recently, and I'm starting to get the hang of it, but I thought of a question that interests me. At some point, you obviously have to be going at a different velocity than the ship you're trying to dock with. But this difference in speed would cause the trajectory, and therefore the orbit, of your ship to be slightly different than that of the ship you're trying to dock with. But it seems to still work nevertheless. So what's going on?
  13. I have successfully docked onto my moon lander in a low orbit above the Mun for a refueling, since I am on career mode I only have access to the Clamp-O-Tron Jr. I attached an FL-T400 fuel tank to a clampotron and my Mod key+Right click is not pulling up the fuel exchange window! I have tried it with and without a adapter, and they have no effect. It shows that the ships have docked and become one, but no fuel transfer window. Help!
  14. So. I have two mods installed. TweakScale, and ModuleAnimateEmissive. Something I have noticed is that when I am getting close to a ship (Kerbal or other ship) and I try to use SAS or RCS, the other ship starts to move as well, making docking or getting into a ship while in space impossible. (side note: even when I have a ship face normal/anti-normal and then get to it, it's moved as well. Maybe it just does that if another ship moves at all?) Anyway, I also am running KSP independently of Steam, so I can update when I've saved my games. Any ideas as to what is happening? A Fellow Rocket "Engineer", CrashJay
  15. Is there a mod to make a tube that can be used to dock two vessels on uneven ground? I think saw it somewhere once but couldn't remember what it was called...
  16. Hey, for any reason I'm not able to dock. I use many different mods, but since I had a similar issue before I think it rather is an issue with the save. The latest one can be found here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1njeve8141savmh/AAC6JPntlmxxIM4bktwdD3Lba?dl=0 It's about the Vessel Station M1 II, which should dock at Station M1. Please note, that there are two docking ports at the M1 II, from which one has more parts on it which are not needed after the docking. Thx for the help. If you still need more data, I'll put it in the dropbox
  17. I would like a large equilateral triangle marking on the docking ports to remind me of the correct orientation during docking (the arrows should line up). That is to remind me of what I intended to do. Edit 1-7-15, To expand on this, I docked a new part to my orbital station. I had the camera zoomed in close for the docking. After docking I zoomed the camera out and discovered the new part was on upside down and tilted off at an odd angle. Due to objects jutting out of the main station, I had to un-dock and back up a good distance, rotate the part and re-dock. Not much of a problem for most people. I, however, am really bad at docking. I would rate a 3 on a 10 point scale for my docking skill. My new station part had no RCS thrusters or reaction wheels due to poor planning. The tug was under powered and sluggish, add in my lack of skill and you have a long, unhappy time. A large physical marking on the docking port outer flange would be a visual reminder to rotate before completing docking.
  18. "Asking for a friend"... no, seriously, I am about to start testing a large space carrier filled with various landing craft in cargo bays and other contrivances. Before I get going I thought I'd ask the community about their experiences. The landers are going to be relatively large (biggest is over 40 tons) and I know they are going to wobble like crazy during carrier maneuvers if they are only docked at one point-- too many degrees of freedom. The question: since 1.0.5, what have been peoples' experience with any or all of the following: -- simultaneous docking to more than one port, same surface -- simultaneous docking to more than one point, different surfaces (e.g. one on the ship's belly, one axial) -- docking to a port followed by capture at a different point with the docking klaw -- capture at multiple points with two or more docking klaws Am really curious about the klaw solutions: in prior versions klawing was a really great way to get krakkened, and if we're talking about multiple docks involving a klaw, then at some point wouldn't the ship be klawing to itself? Weird. Hope this will be as helpful for others as it will for me. Please help and encourage others by 'upvoting' responses you think are good, on this thread and on others in the Gameplay Questions section. Top responder here may get a comics mention __________________________________ Because of the way things get threaded (or not) in this Forum section, I'm going to add to the OP rather than reply to answers: ETA #1 -- I should have mentioned before -- stock solutions please. KAS, KJR, etc are great mods but I prefer not to use them. QUESTION to @Rocket In My Pocket -- to which orange tank surface was your "rock solid" three-port solution attached? End or side?
  19. I am attempting to dock two ship in space, each with a Clamp-O-Tron Docking Port Sr. I have tried docking twice now and each time the docking ports connect at around 0.1 - 0.2 m/s. Next, both ships explode... I feel like I am well within safe docking speed. Am I missing something obvious? Edit: Reply with screenshot is in a follow up post I made below.
  20. I have a miner/lander shuttling between minmus and an orbital refinery. Docking is fine when it is fully laden, but every once in a while I have to do a dock with the holding tank empty, and then what happens is that the craft yaws/pitches rocks widely during the final moments. Translation (IKJLHN) works fine but attitude adjustment (ADWSQE) produces wild and difficult to control rocking moments. (If I use Lock View at these times I can actually get seasick ) I assume this is because my craft is balanced for full holding tanks. I further assume that the rocking is caused by a bad interaction between the SAS and the RCS controls... But what to do about it? (1) Position the RCS thrusters midway between hold full and hold empty, ensuring it ALWAYS rocks, but not too badly? (2) Make two sets of RCS thrusters, one for each centre of gravity? (3) Is there a fiendishly clever mod that causes the RCS thrusters to slide between different positions to make up for shifting CoM (4) Somehow make up for it with piloting skill? If so, how?
  21. This happens reliably - three times in a row, now, which is frustrating. I have a space station with a small docking port, and when I carefully put a new station mast onto the dock, it seems to "take" correctly. However, when I then decouple the tug that brought the mast, it is taking the mast's deployable radiator, and in two of three cases the deployable solar panel as well. These parts then float in front of the tug as if attached where they were when the mast was being carried. I am running stock v1.0.5.1028 on a Windows 10 64-bit machine, though task manager says KSP is 32-bit. I installed via Steam. All of the crafts in question (the station, tug and mast) are from the most recent version.
