  1. The Origin of this Thread (BORING INFORMATION): I wanted to post about my new career mode save with both MH and BG, as I thought we (that is, me + whoever decides to read my undoubtably poorly written mission report) would find it interesting to learn about the application of the robotic parts to career mode. I was going to post about it earlier, but I thought it might be nice to write about it a little. So I made up a vague storyline referencing something (if you get it I will give you rep) and somehow, I ended up with a not-half-bad graphic-novel style mission report. Mods List (SLIGHTLY LESS BORING INFORMATION): I am playing on Moderate difficulty (one harder than Normal), mainly meaning that I have to pay to research a part once I have unlocked it with science. I am also playing with a few mods installed. Here are the ones which impact gameplay: - Both DLCs - KAC, Transfer Window Planner, KER and Trajectories: Essential for any KSP play-through. - Stock Visual Enhancements and Scatterer: So my pictures are less boring. - KAS and KIS: In order that I can flat-pack rovers. - SCANsat: To give more purpose to probes and to add a little challenge. Also because I like the maps. - ReStock and ReStock+ : To make the parts look better (in my opinion) and to add some parts I feel were missing. - USI-LS: In order to make longer duration missions harder (but not impossible). - K&K Planetary Base Systems - they have a nice Extraplanetary Launchpad and an Algae Farm which turns Ore -> Fertiliser (+Mulch -> Supplies). - OSE Workshop - to produce spare parts if, like I invariably will, I forget antennae. - MIP (Modification of Inner Planets) - To add a couple more destinations. You will see them as the story progresses. - NF Solar and Electrics - Because USI-LS makes me use a load more EC. And (stock) solar doesn't work so well at Jool. Also NF Solar is *really cool*. - Heat Control - Because NF Electric makes loads of extra heat. - MkIV Spaceplanes - I HATE ROCKETS and now I can fly bigger payloads into orbit without them. - Kerbal Atomics - I love these 2.5m NERVAs. I am also imposing the restriction upon myself that there may only be 1 rocket launched per day. Chapter List (NOT VERY BORING INFORMATION): Links to Imgur albums. Only finished chapters included. Chapter 1 - Professional Kludges Chapter 2 - I Need to Do More Calculations Chapter 3 - Designing and Refining The beginning! (NOT VERY BORING STORY): Tune in next time for me going to the Mun and getting orbital science. Or don't. (Tune in, that is. I will be getting the orbital science anyway, and you cannot stop me. Muahahahaha.)
  2. This is gonna be a little series I came up with, but it will not include images, because some of the things that I hope to get to are way too advanced for me to play as a player and for my dang old computer to handle. While this series will mostly be following the views of Jeb, Bob and Bill may make occasional entries into the journals. Anyways, I hope you enjoy!
  3. I was watching a new KSP player streaming, and he was trying for a Mun landing early in his career game. Like a lot of new players he was smitten with SRB's... because they are cheap. I told him with the parts he had, he could do it with no SRB's and the rocket would be easier to control. I didn't have an early career Mun lander saved in my own game to show him. So I built a new one and tested it from launch pad to Mun landing, and back to Kerbin landing. So I figured I would post it up in case any new players were stuck and needed ideas. There are many variations of rockets capable of getting you to the Mun & back. For this particular build you'll need to first upgrade your launch pad & VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building) to level 2. Also, it's certainly possible to get there & back WITHOUT upgrading the tracking station... and I encourage you to try. Now granted I'm not a new player, so if you try this rocket you may not make it on your first attempt. Keep trying! I promise it will do the job. A quick tip I like to give new players: It is recommended before executing a maneuver node, or doing a major engine burn, that you press Alt+F5. This allows you to make a game save and give it a unique name. To reload press Alt+F9. By using Alt F5 instead of just F5 alone, you can make incremental saves throughout a mission. This is useful for practicing a particular situation... like the descent from orbit and the actual landing.
  4. NO MORE SCIENCE! Here's my first mod. It introduces a new strategy that exchanges Funds for Science points. I made it because KerboKatz is not updated anymore and I think it was a great mod that changed the way I play career mode. WHAT IT DOES: You don't have to do science experiments anymore. Just keep hoarding money from contracts and when you're ready to unlock a new tech tree node just buy some science with cold hard cash. The exchange ratio is 1000 : 1. Here's the Google Drive link (because I've been waiting for the last 6h for SpaceDock to send me the confirmation email!): [Download link snipped by moderator, pending posting of source code; see note below] All you have to do is put the 'SciencelessCareer' folder into your GameData folder. Screenie: NOTE: It depends on your playstyle and how you want to use it but I recommend trying it with minimal science rewards. License: CC BY-SA 4.0
  5. Career Mode Fixing Discussion Please someone suggest a better name Contributors: Sequinox | John FX Pthigrivi | Workable Goblin tater Kaos juanml82 How to Submit: State your idea with an explanation To submit, go to this link, http://goo.gl/forms/5eMyLdvSOv. If you want your name on the contributors list, please include your forum name along with your suggestion. Red - Not a good idea for stock and is likley to never be added, but a good idea for modders to look into. The list is under development. Science: -Science experiments should be more involved, such as studying the results. - Most experiments as well as crew and EVA reports should be automatically gathered and stored to await transmission to reduce clickiness. - Other experiments aught to require some specific flight action by the player, rather than just being clicked. - Data should be in principle 100% transmittable. To encourage crewed return missions surface samples should not be transmittable, and their science value should be much higher by comparison. Transmission losses could be handled entirely by the new dish setup. - Experiments should open new information to the player outside of unlocking the tech tree, such as making heat-bars visible and producing biome maps. - Different Biomes aught to offer different science multipliers on the same world, so as to encourage site-specific landings. Tech Tree: -Tech tree should be less linear. Game Mechanics: - Kerbals should either automatically level-up in flight or some method aught to be offered to allow them to do so. - The mechanics of gaining experience really needs better visual feedback, so that players can see what they need to do to gain experience and see when they've achieved it. - New abilities could be added for higher level kerbals, such as aerocapture and landing site prediction for pilots and perhaps simple KAS-like abilities granted to engineers. - Loans -Kerbonauts should spend time for training at the KSC. Training would cost money. Only after their training is complete they can fly on missions. -Kerbonauts can have more than one skill based on their training. -A mission planner and organizer: Set times to launch missions, name your missions, etc... Misc.: -Add more flexibility. Ex: Play with reputation but not money, science and money but not EXP. -Ability to play against other space programs, much like a space race type thing. -Procedural Engines: You can build your own engines and get breakthroughs in science. You can sell blueprints to other companies for funds. If you want to buy a pre-existing engine(which would be developed by other companies) you must buy the blueprint from another company. It would take science and funds to build an engine, but would give you science in return. This mechanic could be used in a part testing feature and the engine could have a chance to fail. Building Tiers: - Fill out the 4 tier system so that the step-ups are more manageable, with costs both distributed and reduced. - Tighten up the size and weight limitations for lower tiers on the LaunchPad and Runway. The runway aught to increase in size, but not smoothness. - Add an Alarm Clock and Mission Planner to the 2nd of 4 tiers at the Tracking Station and Mission Control - Add Delta-V and TWR to the the 3rd of 4 tiers of the VAB and SPH Missions, Contacts, Strategies and Milestones: -There should be a delineation between "Missions," designed by the KSC staff (Linus and Werner, et al), and commercial Contracts -System for generating non-commercial contracts. Ex: Set goals for the mission, time limit, etc... and the game will generate a budget for you if the mission is accepted. Mission acceptance will be based on rep. For more explanation, see Tater's post below on the 1st page. - Contracts could be categorized by the body they pertain to so players could more easily sort and plan missions. (Sort of like a hierarchy system. Kerbin -> Mun -> (Contracts and milestones) - Strategies that are already active should be adjustable at any time without disabling the strategy. For Modders: You are absolutely allowed to use this list to build a mod upon. You do not have to give credit to this thread if you do not wish to. 6. This is inspired by a lot of Kerbal Mission Reports, and I've been wanting to create my own content for a while, but the real instigation was Angel-125's Heisenberg mod and his mission report. Then I found Plan Kappa, and I knew for sure that I wanted to do some sort of Mission Report / fictionalization of my main game save. Mod List Overview I wasn't a big fan of the existing nation maps of Kerbin, so I made my own. I've been using Kerbal Konstructs for some time, so this version of Kerbin contains Kerbinside, Kosmodrome, the BAD-T airfields, and possibly additional bits and pieces. The basic history is analogous to ours, sort-of. The Kerman Empire 2,000 years ago built roads all over the place, setting up the preconditions for truly world-wide trade. There was an equivalent to the Hanseatic League, and there was a Great War, which is sort of a combined WWI/WWII without the genocide. The sudden appearance of the monoliths brought everyone to the table to resolve their differences at least temporarily, and now there is an uneasy truce and a joint effort to explore the source of the monoliths. The general public isn't aware of the monoliths (yet). PSA - The Panarchist Space Alliance The PSA was formed at the end of the Great War to investigate the origin of the monoliths. Kerbin Kerbin at the time of this story has 22 nations - 5 major powers and 17 minor ones. Most of the national flags are from @UAL002 's awesome flag pack, but a few are my own design or adapted from materials online which are CC BY-NC licensed. (see comment below for details) The Major Powers Kermania: Kermania is an analog to Earth's Germany. Originally a loose federation of barbarian tribes in the days of the Kerman Empire, they overran and defeated that power before collapsing back into a dark age of anarky. Later, under Konstantine Kerman, the tribes consolidated into several warring nation states until Kaiser Vilhelm Kerman united them into the nation of Kermania. Kermania was a major player in the Great War - part of the Triaxial League: Kermania, Imperial Kermanovia, and Yitalia. Kermania started the war with the invasion of Polan in year -5. (Year 1939 in the old calendar) After the Great War, Kermanian scientists were instrumental in advancing rocket science to the point where manned space travel was possible. Kermanian rocket technology was pioneered during the war, and at the war's conclusion, on Year One, Day Three, Kermania launched the first orbital satellite - the first peaceful use of rocket technology, using a booster intended to launch a new weapon against the USK. South Kijani: The nation of South Kijani was originally neutral in the Great War, until Kermania invaded their territory to launch an offensive against the USK. South Kijani then sided with the USK to drive back Kermania and take the pressure off their occupation of Keltica. Union of Kerbalized Kommunist Republiks (UKKR): Formerly the Kingdom of the Kermanovs, Imperial Kermanovia became a member of the Triaxial League during the Great War and led the offensive against United Kerbdom until Kermanovian workers rose in revolt against their imperialist masters during the Red Oktober uprising. The new Kommunist state immediately sued for peace with the UK and signed a non-aggression pact which made them neutral for the remainder of the Great War. After the war, the UKKR established Area 110011, the preeminent test flight facility on Kerbin, and the KKVLA, a new radio telescope to detect signals from space. United States of Kerbin (USK): The USK was one of the Allied Powers in the Great War, and led the bulk of the fighting against Kermanian expansion. United Kerbdom (UK): United Kerbdom, in a flip of "real world" history, was originally a colony of the USK Which declared independence and established a constitutional monarchy. The Minor Powers Arabnia: The Kingdom of Arabnia has been ruled by the Al Kaud family for generations, and has been home to desert nomads and kamel farmers for far longer than that. The Kingdom appeared destined to remain a minor power until the discovery of Liquid Fuel. Exploration revealed that Arabnia contains Kerbin's largest reserves of Liquid Fuel, and the Kingdom has successfully leveraged that fact to earn a place at the table. Cratery Coast: (more detail to come) DPRK: The Demokratic People's Republik of Kerbin is a misnomer, as it is neither demokratic nor a republik. It is instead a military diktatorship established during the Kaoist Skism of 115 (Old Rekoning). The DPRK has no launch facilities of its own, but contracts with Republiko Simios for use of the facilities of Sanctuary Mouth. The Simios government has largely stepped back from the use of that facility, happy to keep the cash flowing. Goreyo: Goreyan culture is one of the oldest civilizations on Kerbin, and perhaps the least changed from its origins during the Big Split - the initial divergence of Kerbalkind from their pre-historic origins. Erryday: Erryday is known for their world-famous bobsledding team, their world-famous koffee, and their world-famous relaxed attitude. Indeed, it's amazing they ever get anything done. The nation is an island paradise, and their citizens work only an hour each day. (or as the residents say, erryday) Erryday's space program started the same way their bobsled team did - someone cracked a joke and said they'd never have one, so they went out and started one. Erryday contracts with New Batavia and the Cratery Coast to use their launch facilities at The Shelf and Hanbert Cape, respectively. Finnlund: Finnlund maintains the largest commercial fishing fleet on Kerbin. (more detail to come) Free Republik of Kerbin: The Free Republik of Kerbin split off from the USK many years ago, after the UK successfully broke away. Some of the early rebels wanted to call the new nation "Kexas", but were shouted down by those who thought there were already too many kountries with a "k" in their name. The Free Republik is a large island, and prides itself on the best beef in all of Kerbin, and was also the heart of the USK's Liquid Fuel industry before breaking away. Since becoming independent, that industry collapsed due to over-mining, and now the primary economy is beef, leather, outdoor equipment and enormous belt buckles. The Free Republik managed to stay out of the Great War, but because they wanted to - not because they were cowards. (and if you imply they are, they will give you "what for") Since the war, the FRoK keeps saying they're going to launch people into space, and that they have a great plan - the best plan ever, the highest rated plan anyone's ever seen. Rumor has it they have built a Top Secret facility in the island's interior. Hellenik Republik: The Hellenik Republik is the kradle of demokracy and the birthplace of Kerbal philosophy and science. Sokrates Kerman, Arkhimedes Kerman (before he moved to Syrakuse), Pythakoreus, Aristokle... the list goes on and on. The Republik wasn't always a republik, however - in years past it's been a kingdom, a military diktatorship, an oligarchy, matriarchy, patriarchy, a true democracy, and a libertarian dys/utopia (depending on who you ask). Every type of government has been tried, because the Helleniks are nothing if not experimental and ready to try anything. Most of the time, however, they have been a republic, though many think they are an autonomous collective. During the Great War, the Hellenik army successfully held off several Kermanian advances, and ultimately caused enough casualties that the Kermanic offensive found an easier target: South Kijani. The deciding battle was fought by 300 Kerbals under Leonidas Kerman in the battle of Kermopylae. Leonidas and his brave Kerbals all died, but the Kermanic advance was halted and several thousand Kermanians perished. The Helleniks have a small facility at Sea's End, on the inland sea. The facility is known more for its research than any real attempt at getting into space. Kanada: Kanada is another former colony of the USK, but one which was intended to be independent from the start. It was a place for every Kerbal who found the USK to be far too warm. Kanada is sometimes called the land of milk and honey, due to all the goats and the bees there. Kanada is also Kerbin's largest supplier of waffle syrup. Prior to the Great War, Kanada lost its southern province when Imperial Kermanovia expanded northward. Since the Revolution, Kanada has opened talks several times with the UKKR to get the regions around Boostershire Farms and Dundard's Edge back, but the UKKR has so far refused to hand back the land they took. Kanada has a small space program, but one of the best astronaut training centers on Kerbin - the Polar Research Center on the northern ice cap. Kanada is currently training the next crop of Kerbonauts for a mission to Duna. Celtika (or is it Keltica?): New Batavia: (more detail to come) Polan: (more detail to come) Republika de Santa Kruz: (more detail to come) Republiko Simios: (more detail to come) Skaibern Empire: The home in exile of the Kermanovs after being forced out of Kermanovia by the Oktober Revolutionaries. (more detail to come) Skotslund: Skotslund is Kerbin's airship capital, and home to all things considered strange on Kerbin - hakkis, kiltz, bagkipes, and golf. It's also home to ridiculous amounts of lifting gas, which not only got Skotslund's airship program literally off the ground, but provides hours or fun at parties when people breathe lifting gas and talk in high-pitched voices until they pass out. Yitalia: The home and birthplace of pasta, and the world's greatest shoes. Yitalians also originated lawn bowling. Yitalia was a member of the Triaxial alliance during the Great War, but when they learned that Kermania was planning to launch rockets against the USK, they defected from the alliance and claimed the Kwiss alps region of Kermania, moving troops up to capture the Messerkerman factory there. After the war, Timekeeping on Kerbin: 1 "Astronomical Unit" (AU) on Kerbin is 13,599,840,256 m (45.4 LS) Kerbin sits in a circular orbit with a 23.5° inclination respective to the ecliptic, which means Kerbin has seasons similar to those on Earth. It has a 600km radius, which is 1/10 that of Earth. Year 1, Day 1 coincidentally is the first day of Spring in the northern hemisphere. (thanks to the mod "Harder Solar System" for the inclined orbit!) Sidereal Orbital Period: 9,203,545 s (426d 0h 32m 24.6s) Sidereal Rotation Period: 21,549.425 s (5h 59m 5.9s) Solar Day: 21,600 s (1d / 6h) Kerbin Year: 9,203,545 s (426d 0h 32m 24.6s) Kerbin has a "Leap" year every 12 years unless that year is divisible by 180 - but every 900 years *is* a leap year, and every 21,600 years is NOT. 1 year - 14 months of 30 days each, plus "Holiday", a 6 day intercalary month. (7 days on leap years) 1 light year (Kerbol LY) = 2,759,153,377,863.61 km 1 light year (Earth LY) = 9,460,730,472,580.8 km (3.43 Kerbol LY) Year 1, Day 1 is actually 1950.12.27 under the previous calendar, which dates back to the founding of the Kermanian Empire. It's been nearly 4,200 years since the beginning of recorded Kerbal history. Days: (5 weeks of 6 days each per month) Sunday | Munday | Dunaday | Joolday | Evesday | Sarnusday
  7. Intro: So hear me out. The best way to get people back in the game is to make something new. Although I'm loving that they are making mods like infernal robotics a supported function of the game, it doesn't change the fact that a lot of us have been using those features for years. Same with the deployable experiments. everything added since the late stages of early access have been mods with the exception of their first dlc (which felt more like a groundwork than an actual feature in my book). With that said, there is one area of the content market that hasn't been touched, career mode and science mode. Besides for the rearrangement of the tec tree and the addition of a few new missions here and there, not much has changed. I've also thought the way these features have been implemented seemed a little shallow. What I want to suggest is a new overhaul for these two modes. The first part of this is looking at how it works in the real world. Science: (Continuing the comment the next day. Thought I would post it up here to avoid confusion) Problems with science: In real life, there isn't the direct correlation seen in ksp between science as we see it in the game and the advancements made in technology. The relationship in real life is 90% of the time closer to finding new problems we have to solve. This is never a problem in ksp because we are given all the information about all the star, all the planets and everything in between. what is the point of bringing a barometer to a planet where you already know everything about its atmosphere? In the real world, we had tests to see if space was a vacuum, we had to run many tests to see if we could pressurize a capsule, and we had little idea about any of the stuff we know until we sent something there to test it (Think about our recent visit of Pluto). Problems with technological advancements: The other problem with how career mode/science mode was made was almost systemic. I feel like what was implemented wasn't there original gameplan. I've come to this conclusion because of how little their parts actually fit into the tec tree idea they have implemented. The tec in the game was not designed to go into a tec tree. For the most part, the "tec level" is based on the size of a part and not actually how much knowledge was needed to build it. What I want to see is the implementation of iterative designs. My solution: Basically, you start out with a lot of junk parts. These parts look bad, don't work well, probably fail in environments outside of Kerbin sea level, and for good measure, have a base fail chance. Along with taking missions to study your solar system (of which you know nothing about), you would also take missions from your science team to help them improve your parts. unlike the test missions given off now. These missions would give you credits towards upgrading our parts. Along with these missions to give you credits. there would be general things like allowing engines to work in a vacuum, water, restart, throttle, etc. (All things we had to learn, and are still learning, in the field). This science would be collected by doing things like the barometric test and temperature tests we see in KSP today. A good way to think of this is the first capsule ou send to space should always be empty. It needs to be tested first. Without things like this, this game is missing out on some of the best parts of our job in exploring the world and beyond! Career: Problems with Career & the suggested improvements: The main problem with the career is how lightweight it really is. There is very little to it, and it's hard to actually mess up. This is fine for some, but I think a lot of us were originally hoping for a bit more. A lot of what makes career modes great is the management. You need to be able to see your expenses and take risks. Squad tried to implement this before launch with that one building no one ever clicks on but it really doesn't work that well. a career mode should revolve around time and funds managment. You should see how much it costs to maintain a team of engineers as well as how long it takes to build a rocket. An alarm clock and construction time should be implemented. You should be able to speed up the construction of a craft with part failure chance going up. you should be able to fire staff to lower your costs and hire them as needed. There should be a monthly/yearly expense report. These features would go a long way to making career mode a better mode. A few more ideas would be including things like kerbal konstructs, allowing you to spend money to build more launch pads as well as just more infrastructure. I don't like that particular mod too much because of how messy it looks but a lighter version of it could go a long way. The main point I would say is to look at a game like X-COM. It has a solid management system that would work beautifully in a game like KSP. even the kerbal upgrade sstem could be improved along the same lines.
  8. Here is my situation. I got a rescue mission for stranded guy stuck in debris around kerbin. So, I managed to RDV with object. The thins is, I can't pull out stranded guy from debris. It doesnt have anything I can control, neither docking module. So I did EVA to get inside that cabin. It seems solved, but actually it is not. I cant transfer both to my ship. I instantly lose control for crew cabin. So I have to choose one who will escape.(Obviously, this is inhumane. or I can say, 'inkerbane') This is my question: how can I complete this mission without sacrificing kerbal? I brought another kerbal for emergency situation, but this is not helping me for now. Because I cant remote control. I guess crew cabin without command module caused problem. But not for sure. I tried this mission for 6 hours. I dont wanna lose this.
  9. The time has come for Kerbal-kind to leave our small blue oasis on Kerbin and venture out into the great beyond - to the unknown worlds that beckon us from afar like silent lanterns adrift in the night. We are resolved to go to Jool! To unlock the secrets of the unknown, and hopefully also to come back! Prologue: What follows is my account of the planning, execution and aftermath of the Magellan mission to the Jool system in my career save. I have spend the majority of my time playing KSP within the Kerbin system visiting the Mun and Minmus ad nauseum, and unlocking most of the tech tree. Besides Duna, I have never visited any other body in a career save. My goal in this career is to send missions to visit all the celestial bodies in the Kerbol system. Some will be manned and some unmanned. With a Jool transfer window approaching in 41 days, I have decided to take a bold step towards this goal by sending a crew of valiant (or maybe daft) kerbals to this giant green world and her moons. Magellan Mission The Magellan mission will take after the great explorer Ferdinand Magellan in attempting a feat which has never before been done (by me). To send a manned mission to the Jool system, take science data on all the worlds therein and return to Kerbin. I'm calling this a Jool-4.5 mission because unlike the Jool-5 mission reports from challenges, there will be no flags or footprints on Tylo, instead I will have a probe land and report back with science data. But the rest of the moons will be visited by Kerbals. Here is the mission patch for the Magellan Mission : The patch shows the silhouettes of Jool, Laythe, Val and Tylo against a backdrop of stars and backlit by the sun as the spacecraft flies by. It is modeled after the STS-41 mission patch. The motto is latin for "To the stars through adversity", and was totally Magellan's rallying cry on his voyage something I thought sounded cool. This mission report is primarily for my own benefit, as something to look back on when this mission is over, but I hope others will find it enjoyable as well. I intend to chronicle my thinking as it relates to mission planning, vehicle design and testing and mission execution in a matter of fact way, and not to write a story or a novel. Right now, I'm not planning to do much if any roleplaying from a Kerbal standpoint, but who know maybe I will get carried away later on. Notes about my playstyle: At this stage, I have designed the vehicle and a rough sketch of the mission plan. I build and test all my vehicles in a sandbox save and then copy the craft files to my career save. For testing purposes, I am allowing myself cheats to get the vehicle into LKO, but no testing will be done in the Jool system. This will hopefully force me to think more carefully about what conditions I will encounter at Jool and will preserve the newness of the experience for me when I actually fly the mission in my career save. I do use quite a few mods, but no part mods (aside from SCANSAT). The mods that I use fall under one of three categories: (1) Visual enhancements (2) Sounds/Effects to increase immersion and (3) Gameplay tools (ie KER) What's Next: In the next posts I will be showcasing the design of the spacecraft, and possibly doing some on-orbit testing. Once I unlock all the parts I need in my career save we will get onto the meat of the mission.
  10. I think it would be cool if it would be necessary to upgrade the space suits as the game progresses. eg. At the start, the space suits would not have their own tanks and would rely on staying close to the ship to keep a kerbal alive (Maybe have something like a pipe attached to the suit so that the kerbal can't just float away.) The second update would feature an oxygen tank, the next: RCS thrusters. They could be upgraded in the Research Facility. What do you think?
  11. To satisfy their unceasing desire to launch themselves into the void of space on top questionable rockets, the kerbals rushed to form a space program. But in their haste to get started on this great endeavour, they forgot* to give it a name. Thus, it became known only as "the space program". *) I was too lazy to come up with one. =================================================================================================== This is a career I started in KSP 1.3.1 (later updated to 1.4.5) about a month ago, and that I thought I'd share here. I'm using a heap of mods (list in the spoiler below), with MKS and USI-LS being two of the main ones. It's my first time using these in a career playthrough. I'm not sure to what extent I'll use the kolonization parts, but life support will play a big role. Running out of supplies will lead to death, and death is permanent. I'm also sticking somewhat rigidly to the rule of no reloads. The presentation style will most likely be short descriptions of events, accompanied by lots of pictures, 'cause who doesn't like pictures. Hope you enjoy! MOD LIST FLIGHT LOG VEHICLE LIST
  12. The (Mis)adventures of FAST-NAO The Three Flags Hello! This is the story of my newest career: FAST-NAO. A space program just taking its first steps into the final frontier. The program names are all inspired by Dungeons and Dragons: Here are the mission logs so far:

  14. This is one of my best creations: a reusable launcher made with stock parts only. Average payload is between 20 and 40t: in career mode it prevents huge funds wasting, making contracts more profitable and missions more affordable. However, you can boost it up to 70t with some modifications as extra fuel tanks and a few boosters. For a full technical excursus on how to make this thing fly you can check craft's page on KerbalX or the video I made appositely. For a rapid overview I made a Quick Guide album on imgur, which pics are available after the video. Some specs (from KerbalX): Type: VAB Class: lifter Part Count: 110 Pure Stock!! Don't get mad with those fancy mods which just drain power from your gpu... Mass: 282.41t Cost: 159,700.0 (My average funds recovery rate is between 98% if I land ON KSC, 96% if I land in a range of 100km) I hope to get some feedback of any kind. I hope you enjoy! I hope you'll fly safely =.= Upload huge craft files to the space consuming no gigabytes, or just some fuel tanks... ...and no, you won't waste 'em either. Take advantage of re-entry warming up your snack on the cockpit. Get back to KSC in time for dinner. Land safetely enjoying all those balloons!
  15. i was just wondering what the community loves most. is does not matter how modded your game is as mods can make the difference between playing the one or the other.
  16. I'm wondering about what's the most realistic one can make Kerbal Space Program (but would probably make some tweaks to make it remain "playable"). Because of this I decided upon version 1.2.2 for which a lot of the realism mods seem to be available. I've toyed with several configurations involving for example Realism Overhaul and Real Solar System; one involving the SETI tech tree, and then I went on to Realistic Progression Zero. Principia is also a wonderful mod that I found out is available, just not on CKAN. I've since started a video commentary (probably very on-and-off). Not that I'm even a good Kerbal Space Program player just yet; this just seems to be a not yet thoroughly explored idea for a playthrough so why not. Here are the mods I'm currently using. Indented are requirements for the parent mod, though I tried to only mention each mod once so it's actually the first occurence of the requirement I came across. Realism mods: Realism Overhaul Advanced Jet Engine Solver Engines Plugin Ferram Aerospace Research ModularFlightIntegrator Kerbal Joint Reinforcement Module Manager RealChute Parachute Systems Real Fuels Community Resource Pack RealHeat Real Plume SmokeScreen - Extended FX Plugin Real Solar System Kopernicus Planetary System Modifier Principia Realistic Progression Zero SXTContinued Firespitter Core Firespitter Resources config Retractable Lifting Surface Module Contract Configurator Custom Barn Kit Deadly Reentry Continued Ven's Stock Part Revamp Community Tech Tree Kerbal Construction Time MagiCore RemoteTech TAC Life Support (TACLS) (Semi)Saturable Reaction Wheels BackgroundProcessing PersistentRotation Dang It! Continued. (Okay, maybe TestFlight is the preferred option, but my engines keep losing efficiency and cutting off much before their rated burn time. Maybe I just don't understand the mod in which case I could reinstall it if I get better understanding of how to make workable rockets but as it stands it's just too much uncertainty for me to make pretty much any progress.) Kerbalism TAC profile (settings for compatibility: Signal = false, Reliability = false, EnforceCoherency = true) (since episode 8) Kerbalism (since episode 8) Other Gameplay Additions: EVA Parachutes_Ejection Seats Kerbal Attachment System Kerbal Inventory System KRASH - Kerbal Ramification Artificial. (I opted not to allow reverting of flights so this I felt like was a suitable alternative. I can simulate flights before putting my crew and a vast amount of funds in danger.) SCANsat StageRecovery. (I'm a bit hazy on whether this can recover even things that couldn't manually be recovered so I placed it under this category) TweakScale - Rescale Everything! Unfortunately I haven't been able to get Real Solar System Visual Enhancements working properly. The first time I tried with new versions of its requirements some distance up in the atmosphere Earth becomes all blue, while with the versions its forum page said the ground's all black. There's just too much clutter otherwise.) QuickExit. (It's tedious to exit from the game through menus and alt+F4 doesn't save the game) QuickHide. (Even though I tried to limit extra clutter, it was unavoidable with such a large arrangement of mods. This mod allows you to get rid of some of the clutter. However, for some reason it doesn't seem to hide every button it's seemingly allowed to. Help?) RSS DateTime Formatter Final Frontier. (For ribbons for your Kerbals!) Hide Empty Tech Tree Nodes As for the difficulty settings, I'm thinking of going with hard but with Funds Rewards at 300% (later was changed to 200%) (I expect a lot of failing and I don't want to lose the game completely), Science Rewards and Reputation Rewards at 100%, 25000 starting funds, 80% resource abundance, quick loads allowed, Kerbals Level Up Immediately, Part Pressure and G-Force Limits and Kerbal G-Force Limits, Require Signal for Control, Plasma Blacout. For these I'm looking for something that's decently playable and possibly fun to watch if I were to record it. So, any suggestions for any additions or changes?
  17. Kerbal Space Agency Program Benvenuti a tutti i lettori, occasionali, e appassionati.
  18. I finally got around to playing in Career mode, with USI life support (not colonization) and having to purchase parts to unlock them. The thing is, I have enough money that I can ignore it when building crafts, but not enough so the building upgrades are a concern. I could decrease the cash multiplier but that would make the building upgrades too much of a grind. Overall, I feel money needs rebalancing. So here is my suggestion: Make the cost of building ships (and unlocking parts in my case) be more similar to building upgrades, so either raise the part costs or lower the building costs Or, add in more cash drains, like say, a monthly upkeep, or having to hire more mission teams to fly more missions at the same time.
  19. Cironaut Space Agency (A.K.A - Yet Another GPP Playthrough!) So, after reading many of these mission logs/career playthroughs, I've decided to do one of my own. I know there’s been a few done for the Galileo Planet Pack (GPP), but as I find it’s the best planet pack I’ve come across so far, this is the one I’m using! I’m also not changing the size of the system, as I’m also using the GEP and OPM mods, so combined this makes an already gigantic solar system that I don’t personally feel needs to be any bigger. Also, I’m probably not experienced enough to attempt it yet! This is a list of mods and contract packs I’m currently using: Some of these are custom mods that I’ve tweaked, such as: Kerbal Renamer – I’ve modified this so that all the Kerbals/Gaelans have westernised names and surnames and I’ve removed the GPP developers - sorry guys! I’ve also enabled this to be called from other scripts/mods, specifically so that anything that may have used the default/stock KSP naming scheme can instead use this one instead. Contract Configurator – I’ve modified this so that it uses my custom Kerbal Renamer scheme to name randomly generated Kerbals/Gaelans instead of the default/stock KSP naming scheme. Also ‘fixed’ a bug that displayed Gael in lowercase. TRP Hire – I’ve modified this so that it uses my custom Kerbal Renamer scheme to name randomly generated Kerbals/Gaelans instead of the default/stock KSP naming scheme. Far Future Technologies – I’ve recompiled this for version 1.4.3 but I believe this still has issues with heating, which isn’t a problem with this mod but a problem with KSP itself. However, I like the idea of having anti-matter engines on my rockets so hopefully this will work out! New Suits – This is just some of the Replacement mods from GPP tweaked a bit for my own playthrough. The Kerbals/Gaelans have some recoloured suits I’ve made and matching sprites, and I’ve tweaked the male heads a bit so that they use the heads that were for the Admin staff instead. I also tweaked some colours in the descriptions, but this is almost the same as it is normally in GPP. This is all done through Sigma Replacements in the same way the GPP versions were before. Tourism Plus – I’ve removed the contracts that wanted you to take Tourists to specific biomes, as the biomes were specifically for Kerbin. Also given the first tourist a random name rather than ‘Tito Kerman’, as this was not in line with the new naming scheme. Bases and Stations – I’ve tweaked the Life Support-related contracts to support Snacks. I also submitted this as a PR on GitHub which has now been incorporated into the contract pack by its current maintainer (three guesses who that is!). I’m hoping that in this current career playthrough I’ll be able to visit all the celestial bodies in the Ciro system (incorporating the GPP, OPM and GEP mods) either manned or unmanned. I’m also hoping to unlock all the nodes on the tech tree, which considering I’m using the Community Tech Tree mod should probably take quite a while! However, I’m also using the Hide Empty Tech Tree Nodes mod so that empty nodes are removed, and to hide the tree nodes that haven’t yet been researched (except the ones that immediately proceed from already researched nodes), which I personally feel is a better approach to the tech tree. And these are the difficulty settings I will be using: EDIT: As requested by @HansonKerman, here are some screenshots of the solar system for this playthrough, taken in the Tracking Station: So, let’s get the Cironaut Space Agency started! 1. First Launch Whilst most organisations on the planet Gael that are trying to reach space are attempting to use computers to send unmanned craft instead, due to the obvious dangers of sending a Gaelan up into space, none of them have currently perfected this technology and are struggling to even get off the ground. However, the Cironaut Space Agency (CSA) have decided to throw caution to the wind and are planning on using actual Gaelans to fly their craft first! This should allow the CSA to gain a significant lead on the space race. The first batch of Gaelans to join the CSA are David Welch (pilot), Rita Coleman (scientist) and Dale Watson (engineer): The Mamba Program ultimately aims to build a craft that can send a Gaelan into space, orbit Gael, and return safely to the surface - without killing the pilot inside in the process! The first craft is named Mamba I and has a small Crew Capsule (with capacity for 1 Gaelan), a solid fuel Flea Engine, a Parachute and some science experiments on board: First, the science experiments that are onboard Mamba I are run on the launchpad by David Welch, the pilot: Then the rocket is launched from the Gael Space Centre (GSC) into the sky: It eventually reaches a height of 8,436 metres above sea-level before starting to plummet back towards the surface: When the craft reaches about 1,000 metres above sea-level the parachute is deployed, which slows the craft down and stops it from crashing into the surface: The craft then safely lands back on the ground. The pilot has survived, and the mission is a complete success:
  20. Computer Generated Image Of A Space Station In Another World, Dated Year 105 *Editorial Mode On* I have finally decided to get back in to KSP. More importantly, GPP! Since 6.4x seemed a big tough to accomplish (especially with no Realism Overhaul & ludicrous DV requirements), I have since decided to go with 3.2x. The main difference between this and my last GPP save is the introduction of several new mods, and the perspective change. This series will be through the eyes of Jimeno Gaelan (Seen Below), the CEO of Gael Rocketry United, and his decisions in the program, including the progress of the space program. Only every now and then I will step in to provide background or details. Jimeno Gaelan: Age 55 (Gaelan Years) Also, here's the mod list This time, I'm implementing Kerbalism, and a couple new resource mods, including TheGoldStandard. A couple other mods to spice up the game, and my personal favorite for a 3.2x save, Procedual Parts. Always a big fan of making spacecrafts look amazing, and Procedual Parts & it's part textures are the way to do it (I even added an extra texture pack for Procedual Parts). Main features of this career save: Kerbalism (A resource and environment mod which will probably cause me to accidentally kill Kerbals many times) KRnD (A parts upgrade system that uses science to turn into more efficient spacecraft parts) Tourism Plus (A pack which encourages space hotels & other tourism things) The Gold Standard (Which adds Gold and Unobtanium, both things you'd need for a space empire) Scatterer, EVE, SVE, Various other visual enhancers (to make the experience for both me and the readers more enjoyable) Ground rules: Do stuff in the way that any space program would progress (no unrealistic progression) No overusing of the same kerbal in every single mission Kerbal R&D should be used sensibly, not to make one singular OP part Unique names for spacecrafts! No playing around stories. I will try my best to play this as if it was an actual career mode, and not just a novel waiting to be written. Goals for this career save: Build a space empire (with a large amount of funds) Land or flyby every body Not get tired out if I'm stuck at a certain place (or have the struggle of getting back into the game after I need to take a break from pc games, etc finals starting in 2 weeks) Ask the readers for suggestions on as what to do next! Max out the tech tree (duh) One more thing of note is that I may add GEP in the future, but for now am sticking with just the Galileo System Now, let's get into the SCIENCE! 21. Kerbal Rocketry, Aeronautics, and Space Hub (KRASH) This is the story of KRASH, and its adventures into the unknown. I just got bored with my career save. I unlocked the whole tech tree, and to be honest, landing on other planets just wasn't fun anymore. So I downloaded Outer Planets Mod, and it really helped me get back into this very successful career savegame. This is also my first forum topic, and I got inspired by reading so many of the incredible mission reports in this section. So, we'll see how this goes! Prologue is live! Index to the Chapters/Sections
  22. After some troubleshooting, we've managed to get the impressive planet pack by @Gameslinx up and running in 1.22 Linux x64. I'll be chronicling the adventures of Kerbalkind as they explore this new system. On first impressions, the graphics and the work that has gone into this are outstanding. The first orbital flight with the giant rings overhead and a sunflare are giving me back some of the wonder that made KSP grab me in the first place. Some images from the first two flights follow. A quick sounding rocket for science, then a very clumsy orbiter mainly powered by SRBs. Ended up in an elliptical orbit out of fuel, and Jeb had to get out and push to make it home.
  23. Convert a NEW stock career-mode into the NASA Space Program! Version overhaul update for KSP 1.3 DOWNLOAD HERE Original Content is released under Creative Commons: CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 This mod uses the some dependent parts packs along with custom content to transform your stock career mode into the NASA space program. Some stock parts which don't "fit" well with the nasa-theme are removed (the stayputnik, for example) and almost all of the dependent mod parts are renamed, re-arranged on the tech tree, or modified in some other way. Rockets tanks are grouped by name for easy reference. VAB ships are also included for the major crew pods. Adds custom flags. Also, a placeholder IVA is added to crewed parts which currently lack one (the "hitchhiker storage" IVA is used as the placeholder). Boosters and Capsules are named using original, but related, names to their nasa counterparts. Requires: Additional Progression Contracts ModuleManager TRAILS Plus Contract Configurator Optional: Kerbal Planetary base System This mod uses a modulemanager patch to handle parts - it doesn't delete or modify any of your existing files. Incompatible: Any mods that contain extra parts. Sorry. Credits : This mod contains, with permission, parts developed (forked or were abandoned) by Beale, Ledenko, CobaltWolf, and SnowWhite, all under Creative Commons. A few were unfinished beta parts which I completed myself. Also includes some icons from Community Tech Tree This mod uses modulemanager patches to handle parts - it doesn't automatically delete or modify any of your existing files. What you get: A bunch of new parts, which combined with the dependency parts allow you to construct NASA vehicles and launchers including Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Orion, CST-100, STS, Explorer1, Ranger, Redstone, Atlas, Titan II, Titan III, Saturn I, Saturn V, Ares I, SLS A generous amount of new contracts, based around specific program missions. Completely new tech tree, redesigned from scratch. Pruning parts out of the dependent mods that don't "fit" with the overall theme of the NASA space program. Heavy editing of parts in the dependent mods to fit in the modified progression tree, and for balance purposes. Craft files for most major systems, including subassembly parts for boosters. Installation Instructions: Unzip the contents of "gamedata" into your "gamedata" like most other mods. If you wish, copy the craft files from the ships and subassemblies folders into your save. Gameplay Tips: Turn on advanced tweakables, and use autostrut for some of the larger boosters! The Saturn/Sarnus boosters in particular will wobble like wet spaghetti without this! Try not to "get ahead" of the objectives you get contracts for. (Wait to do an orbital EVA until you get the contract for it in the Castores program) Not required, but it makes the game more interesting. Known Issues: A few of the included booster .craft are slightly overpowered, which is almost unavoidable in a KSP mod of this sort.
  24. Contract Pack: Bases and Stations Continued This is an update to severedsolo's fantastic Bases and Stations contract pack since they have stopped supporting it. Original thread: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/102390-122-contract-pack-bases-and-stations-361-30042017-formerly-kerbin-space-station/& I plan to add a few more features and try to fix some of the lingering bugs, please let me know if there's anything specific you want me to add! Introduction A complete overhaul of the stock Space Station and Base missions. Featuring no fewer than 15(!) extra missions for your stations/bases when they are in orbit. Also stops continuous "build a new space station" or "build a new base" missions. You'll only be asked to build one if there isn't one already on that celestial body. The Pack This pack will completely disable the stock space station (and build a base) missions, and replace them with my own flavour of missions: The Missions Additional Mods that are required or supported by Bases and Stations. (that isn't to say other mods won't work, but these are the ones that B&S is specifically aware of). Contract Configurator by nightingale - available here - REQUIRED DEPENDENCY Module Manager by sarbian - available here - REQUIRED DEPENDENCY StationScienceContinued by ethernet and tomf is highly recommended because it's one of my favourite mods and the pack is specifically written with it in mind. It is available here NearFutureElectric available here TAC Life Support available here USI Life Support available here IFI Life Support available here Kopernicus Support available here Contract Pack: Tourism Plus by nightingale is also recommended The Legal Bit This pack is licensed under MIT License It also contains elements of CosmoBro's Base Construction pack (with permission) which is licensed under MIT License (see below). I have sublicensed this under CC-BY-SA-NC 4.0. Contract Configurator is licensed under MIT License. Mini-AVC is licensed under GNU General Public License v3 Thanks/Credits Massive thanks to Nightingale for all your help, and Contract Configurator - without which this would not be possible. Thanks to metl for your time, patience and massive amounts of code contributed to this project. Thanks to CosmoBro for allowing me to take over Base Construction Agent Flag by Dale Humphries on www.flaticon.com and is licensed under CC-BY 3.0 Thanks to severedsolo for the original creation of this pack Known Issues Possible problem with vessel definitions. More Data needed. Please see this post if you can help. ScienceExperimentModule may require a scene change before it will complete once you recover the science at KSC. This is a minor enough issue that I let it through the net. I think it's a CC bug and nightingale is investigating. Life Support checking is... sloppy to say the least. Don't rely on the pack telling you to send up a crew only when you have LS on board. Check first (working on this) Planned Features Installation CKAN Download: https://github.com/LemonSkin/KerbinSpaceStation/releases
  25. Is it OK if I play KSP in sandbox everytime, and not play career at all? Does the community accept mission reports and stories that are done in sandbox?
