Ok, so when I installed MKS, the gears don't work, when I click deploy it doesn't work, im at 1.3.1 because KIS works in that version, if thats the wrong version that im in, let me know, unless if I didn't add a part that makes the gears work, because when I go to 1.4.1, KIS won't work, I use KIS because it can be useful when you move things, such as building a base or cleaning up a mess, sorry that im off topic, is there anyway to make the gears work or did I not add anything that makes things work?
  2. USI MKS parts are not deploying as intended I do not know why ive tried the tundra parts ive tried all of rthe parts but they aint working sorry English isn't my first language
  3. MKS is a suite of mods from RoverDude with a focus on building bases and colonisation. It adds eleven resources that you can mine, along with various refineries to convert these raw materials into processed goods that can then be used for maintaining a colony. It also adds an additional level of difficulty where your kerbonauts must have large, decent accomodation and supplies so that they won't go stir-crazy. The goal here is to establish a fully sustainable surface base on Laythe - if a moon like Laythe existed in our own solar system with oxygen at reasonable pressure in the atmosphere, liquid water on the surface and 80% of earth's gravity, it would be the prime target for colonisation. However, this isn't easy - because of the atmosphere and the gravity, the landings are challenging. First the mod list: MKS - colonisation mod from RoverDude, including life support. Planetary Base Systems - effectively serves as an extension to MKS giving more part options for life support recyclers, habitation, and various other things. Extra-planetary Launchpads - Allows building of rockets on other planets given sufficient resources to do so. Easy Vessel Switcher - Allows you to Alt-left click to switch to a nearby vessel. Pretty much essential when you have a dozen craft on the ground. KIS/KAS - Inventory system and Attachment systems. Allows you to detach and reattach parts, and to join vessels together for resource transfer. MechJeb - Doesn't really help with flying the planes but setting up and executing maneuvers in space. NearFuture - gives me a few additional options regarding nuclear engines and batteries - nothing game breaking and more to save on part count than anything else. PlanetaryDomes - allows the construction of cool looking surface bases SXT - Stock extensions. Allows electric propellers, sea plane floats and additional plane parts. TacFuelBalancer - Allows dumping and equalising of fuel easily. I also have a few mods like FinalFrontier, PlanetShine, ScanSat, UnmannedBeforeManned installed that don't really impact the mission but add convenience or fun stuff. I do have HyperEdit installed too, but it wasn't used apart from simulating transfer of nuclear fuels (I can do it without hyperedit but it's such a faff - note to @RoverDude - please make this easier!!) Early Experiments The first job was really to test if I could actually get stuff to Laythe, and land it relatively accurately. For that purpose, an initial ISRU-refueller type plane was designed and landed on Laythe, called Heron One: As it's an SSTO plane, it was flown into Kerbin orbit before being docked to a shunt that could transport it to Laythe. This certainly wasn't my finest hour though - landing it is terrifying. The stall speed is around 120ms on Laythe meaning that powered landings are pretty essential, and on non-flat terrain in the dark, it's horribly difficult to land. This means that taking it back to orbit and back down again is possible, but very tricky. It simply doesn't have enough wing area to make it work as an easy to land plane. As such, after landing it twice it got redesignated as "surface fuel dump" and left there. It also scanned for resources that could be mined, and it turns out that the shores of Laythe have everything I need with the exception of Gypsum which isn't massively serious. The second experiment was to see if I could land an MKS Tundra module on the surface. These are big and bulky, but utterly essential to constructing a successful base on Laythe - I need to be able to produce material kits, machinery and specialised parts on the surface in order to build more pieces of the base - leading it to being a sustainable colony that can expand itself. The Barbet was an SSTO plane from Kerbin (just), so it was a simple matter to get it into space, dock it to a shunt for transport to Laythe. Landing wasn't exactly 100%, but the important bits survived and it's around half a kilometre from the Heron, so good enough. I also sent a cargo plane, containing essentials that would be required whilst setting up the base - some supplies to keep the crew fed, some fertiliser so that more food could be grown, along with a some small kontainers to store various goods and some inflatable habitation modules and greenhouses. This wasn't an SSTO plane from Kerbin, so getting it into space was somewhat tricky. Introducing the Egret: Backups Building the base on Laythe is not going to be easy, and naturally, things might not work out. A single plane-crash could mean that the base simply isn't going to work. So we have backups - planes that can take the crew off in an emergency, the Red Kite, and the Erne - there's two Ernes at the start though I crashed one later on: We also have backups around the Joolian system, firstly a full featured base on Vall called the Emmy Noether, that can produce all materials. Getting stuff off Vall and to Laythe is a little long-winded but in an emergency can be completed in under a week. We also have the Leonard Euler station around Laythe - shipped out in 3 parts and joined together in Laythe orbit, it has lots of habitation and is used as a storage resource as well for the difficult to produce stuff - the Vall base has sent over lots of specialised parts, machinery, supplies, fertiliser, organics and colony supplies. We can always go and get stuff from the station as required as it has all sized docking ports for everything. The Madness Begins After the initial mostly successful experiments, I started designing the crazy planes that would be required to establish a fully working base on Laythe. All of these were tested on Kerbin first - can they survive re-entry into Kerbin, can they land at around 3000 metres altitude on Kerbin on rugged terrain (Laythe's air-pressure at sea level is roughly equal to 3000 metres on Kerbin, and Laythe's terrain is really not flat!). The first vessel is Ardea - some drills for mining various resources, along with two Tundra refineries that can turn raw materials into processed goods. It even has landing legs so it can form the basis of the first occupied structure on Laythe. With this it can take all raw materials and convert them to processed goods. With the addition of the Tundra manufacturing plant that has already been landed on Laythe, it can produce finished goods of Material Kits, Machinery and Specialised Parts which can then be used to create new vessels. We also have two Zeltornis - these carry large nuclear reactors to power the various parts of the colony, plus large KIS containers that have a bunch of parts that will be handy for base construction when they get to Laythe. With the award for the second maddest vessel I sent to Laythe, we have the Runway. This allows new vessels to be constructed using material kits and specialised parts using the Extra-planetary launchpads mod. Also contender for the most draggy plane I've ever built. It's not fast, but it does actually fly and land relatively well: I did say second maddest didn't I? We also have the Triple Heron. A 3-cockpitted, twin-fuselage aircraft that really shouldn't exist, or at least, not fly as well as it does. It serves as a backup for the Zeltornis craft above and carries the same cargo, nuclear reactors and large KIS containers: We also have a couple of other utility vessels, firstly an SSTO plane called the Wigeon, that can take resources such as machinery and specialised parts from Laythe orbit to the ground base, as well as carrying a couple of crew: And two Teals designed to be converted to rovers on landing by tearing off the wings and engines - these will be used to move crew and parts from vessel to vessel. I also sent a second variant of the Heron that looks identical to the one already landed at Laythe - however, this one's cargo is some Duna-style modules to help construct the first habitation portion of the base - a PDU (nuclear reactor), a logistics centre and a pioneer base. Getting to Kerbin Orbit and beyond Naturally, getting these "planes" off Kerbin is tricky. The best way I found was to surround it with large boosters to try and keep centre of mass low enough and not have the aerodynamics of the planes interfere too much. Massively overpowered to reach Kerbin orbit, I don't really care as all I want is for them to get there. And they're either designed to dock to a shunt or do get there under their own steam (possibly after some refuelling in LKO). Here's the shunt that pushed most vessels to the destination. Uses some NearFuture engines - they're not any better than the stock nuclear engine, but it helps save on part count when I want moar power: Landing on Laythe The place chosen for landing is a small piece of land of around 250 square kilometres called Ishmael Island, it sits on the other side of Laythe to Jool on the equator, so we get to see the other moons occasionally, but the choice of location was really determined by the initial Heron and the crashed Barbet that could no longer be moved. The main plan here was to get everything down and landed all in the same place ready for assembling. That meant landing all the planes before sending a crew down. The Wigeon also went down but it stopped off first at Leonard Euler to pick up some machinery, specialised parts and two crew members. Most things landed safely, but not all. The second Heron crashed around 2.5km from the launch site (though retained all the important cargo) and one of the Zeltornis planes decided that it didn't like having wings and landing gear any more (self-destructed on physics load on the ground, though it landed ok). Building a working colony Once the crew were down from orbit (via the Ernes / Wigeon), it was time to start creating a base by joining stuff together, recycling unneeded parts like engines and wings. I crashed one of the Ernes on landing (not fatal for the crew, but it'll never fly again) meaning that I now only have one remaining Erne to take crew off planet. The first job was to sort out the Teals, tear off the wings and engines and convert them into rovers that could be used to move parts around. There's two of them (Cape Teal and Baikal Teal) and they are the true work-horses (or work-ducks) of colony building - moving parts from place to place. The second job was to take Ardea, tear all the wings and engines off, put it on landing legs, attach a reactor, add the Tundra assembly plant, and a million and one little jobs. Driving backwards and forwards with the rover to various different vessels, detaching parts, attaching them to the rovers, driving to Ardea, attaching the part there, and so on. This is all painfully slow and involves many steps but eventually I have a workable manufacturing hub. This has all the capabilities to go from mining the raw materials to processing them all the way up to producing material kits, specialised parts and machinery. Then it was time to sort out the runway, by adding a reactor, a workshop and some habitation: You can see the large a KIS Kontainer in the screenshot above - this is now all that remains of one of the Zeltornis craft - both have now been completely recycled for parts, with the exception of the KIS kontainers. Additionally, the Barbet no longer exists - once I'd taken the Tundra Manufacturing and storage container off it, it had served its purpose and was scrapped for its material kits value. The six crew are all required for moving parts around and often have to engage in team lifts to move the heaviest parts. The Teals always come in useful to ferry both kerbals and parts around. The brave pioneers are Tanris, Learigh, Maxalla, Stelya, Gersan and Madie (and technically, Jesra who's remained on Vall to build any emergency stuff that might be required). Rather than cobble together a habitation section from the parts I'd brought with me, all the scrapping of wings and engines and planes means I have plenty of material kits to play with. As I have a working runway that can build other vessels, I decided to construct a skeletal base that I could then attach the parts I'd brought with me. Unfortunately it was dark by the time it had finished, so final tweaks like attaching of parts I had brought with me had to be done in the dark. But finally, it's done - and the second crashed Heron was recycled for parts after all its useful bits had been taken for the new habitation base. All of my bases on other worlds are named after female scientists, and this one will be no different. Please give a warm welcome to Grace Hopper. At this point the base is effectively finished - it can keep up its supplies, has good habitation ratings and can produce its own vessels. Subsequently I did build other stuff - a nuclear fuel and fertiliser plant (I know, these don't really go together, but they were the two manufacturing chains I was missing) - I also built a plane do a bit of (fuel efficient) exploring. If we're going to live on a world, we want to explore! I did build a replacement habitation module that isn't fully equipped as yet - the problem is the initial one is slowly but surely slipping down the hill, gradually trying to get out of physics range where local logistics will stop working and eventually slipping into the sea. The plan is to replicate the base around 5 kilometres away where it is much much flatter, but that will take a significant amount of time to generate the material kits and machinery to build it. Finally, here's a screenshot of all the vessels I could get in a single shot. I have many more plans for the base, but for now - it's ok as it is, it can produce everything it needs to, it has long habitation ratings and plenty of supplies to keep the Kerbals fed and happy. I've had great fun doing this mission - my plane design skills have gone up many notches in the process and surface base building is always great fun. The nations of Gael united to create The New Colonial Alliance, with the aim of colonizing their solar system, innovating their society, and advancing Gaelan civilizations.
  5. So i started a new KSP-save and want to focus on colonisation and base-building like many here as it seems. I want a sustainable Base which can construct Rockets completly by its own (without those DIY container being sent from Kerbin). Pretty much like the old "extralanetary launchpad". With the mods i have i thought this should be possible. I researched "advanced construction" which is supposed to give me stuff like a extractor, kerbal-habbitation-support and ore/metal/rocketpart-tanks etc. All the parts from the "advanced construction" research regarding the Mods arent showing up when i want to construct a lander/rocket with them on Kerbin. This makes the start of the base pretty much impossible. Maybe you have some ideas how to fix it or what i have wrong... or maybe a mods-pack to be able to do what i want?   6. Version: KSP OSX 1.3 (Uncertain if 32bit or 64 bit) Mod List: Like some other reports, KSP is about at the end of the loading, when it crashes. A few mods seem to cause this, and a few examples seem to include BDArmory (but not Baha Turret), SM Armory (with SM Industries), and Modular Kolonization System (MKS). The above are the mods that DO seem to work, though adding any of the ones I just listed makes the game crash. I assume it isn't related to memory, because if I remove a big folder like the BoulderCo from Andromeda: Daydream and add BDA, it still crashes. Link to the Player.log
  7. Summary - MKS flex-o-tubes don't show up in the parts list in the VAB. I think I have all required prerequisite modules. The part didn't show up. I checked the flexotube config file, it said I had to have tech advanced construction, and I do. The part shows as owned in the tech under the research tree. The docs for flexotube only said I needed KAS. I checked KSP.log, it said flexotube needed ConnectedLivingSpace. Downloaded, installed, restarted, no joy. Checked KSP.log again and it now said I needed DeadlyReentry for that part. Downloaded, installed, restarted, no joy. KSP.log doesn't report any further problems with flexotube but I still don't see it in the VAB. Am I missing something? Am I doing something wrong? This driving me nuts, I have a base on Minmus I'm trying to finish and the docking ports won't line up...   8. Curie Orbital Akademy and Gas Station has taken between 3 to 6 launches, thus far depending on how you count. I'm learning / messing with MKS, hence the akademy module, and power distribution module. The original launch consisted of an MSL and Hitchhiker Can as a habitat, along with a set of Nom-o-Matics. While launching the second module of the Ada Lovelace Munar Kolony, I stopped by Curie to grab a couple of scientists, and also brought along a small truss with an inflatable mini-habitat, and the newly invented Docking Ports (not Jrs). I attached it with the Jr. Port on board. This truss also had an antenna, as I sort of forgot one on the original launch. Having accepted a contract to rescue some kerbals, I figured I could bring them down on my crappy SSTO which I have yet to successfully land. Crappy SSTO, "Reliant" I found after orbiting it at 72km, I didn't have the delta-V to get it up to 150km, where Curie lives. I was already getting ready to launch my first tanker, and figured I could rendezvous and refuel it en route. The tanker launch vehicle had extra lift capacity, so I included another Truss segment along with 4 de-orbit pods. The Truss had 4 docking ports around the middle. Turns out, my SSTO docking port was right at about the CoM, so instead of refueling it, I just attached it to the tanker's front docking port, and pushed it up to Curie. At that point, I realized I couldn't dock the SSTO to the truss docking ports, because there wasn't enough room. So I attached it to the end of the truss for now, with plans to bring up docking tubes in a later launch. On the 2nd tanker launch, I included hardware to de-orbit any other capsules I get on rescues (heat-shield, probe core + batteries, parachutes, and Konstruction Docking Port Jrs). The next big construction launch was to send up the MKS Akademy and required Power Distribution Unit (turned out to be overkill). This would be used to train up Kolonists for the Ada Lovelace Munar station and future Minmus kolony. I included 4 docking tubes along with an RCS tug to help put them in place and with future berthing operations. Here's an image before I de-orbited the last engine stage. I realized later I should have disassembled them for MKS parts, but oh well. So right now, I've got the SSTO berthed (on top), 2 fuel tankers with those great looking (high part count) inflatable tanks (replace when I unlock Mk. III fuselage), the Heisenberg Nuklear Tug below, and half of the Bohr Munar Bus (passenger trailer / aka "Short Bus") on the left. The drive section of the Bohr is picking up an empty 2 kerbal passenger compartment from a previous rescue, which I'll convert into a de-orbit vehicle for a tourist and rescuee. This was necessary, as I originally planned to bring them down on the SSTO in the lawn chairs in the cargo hold, but realized the tourist can't EVA to it. At this point, I realized I can't run the PDU for too long, while in sun, as the heat build up is too high. I included Konstruction Ports on the PDU with plans to attach trusses with Gigantor Panels once I unlock them to take the strain off the nuklear reactor. That should help make the fuel last longer. With the heat issues, I'll also throw on some more radiators.
  9. I'm not sure If anyone else has this problem, but can you inflate the inflatable habitation modules (with USI) during flight? The button seems just to be not there. I wanted to get a habitation ring in orbit for my journey to Duna, but I cant extend it mid flight (space). Thank You!

  11. How might one plan an interplanetary trip (2-way) to planets such as Moho, Eve (ive done Duna already and it was difficult), Dres, Jool system or Eeloo? Its easy in the base game without life support but with life support it adds extra difficulty as you have to haul along several years worth of supply containers with you, which in turn drastically reduces the total Delta-V for your ship. Even shipping it up in two parts was difficult for duna as there was literally only 830 m/s of dV from low kerbin orbit to get to duna and back. Please can someone give some tips if they know any? Thanks.

Launch rockets from a Construction Port. Features: No extra parts No RAM usage Simple, configurable and adds levels of depth to the gameplay. Requires: Module Manager Download: Released: SimpleConstruction After testing out Extraplanetary Launchpads and Roverdude's MK/OKS, I had the idea of creating a simple, user friendly mod that would allow you to build rockets without taking a 200MB hit to RAM or having to juggle multitudes of resource pathways. If you know how to set up a drill, ISRU and a fuel tank for an Ore to Fuel conversion, then you should know how to build rockets. Completed: ISRU converts Ore into Metal Mobile Processing Lab converts Metal into RocketParts Docking Port Jr. renamed as Construction Port and acts as a launchpad InterstellarFuelSwitch patch works correctly. Final testing. In development: Planned: Simplified Productivity parameters (locked into the .ddl for now.) Changelog: v0.1: A something. v0.2: Included a fuelswitch patch for testing purposes. Released on KerbalStuff. v0.3: Cleaned up folder. v0.4: Ore tanks can now switch between Ore, Metal and RocketPart capacity.   13. In MKS, you need electric charge, mulch and fertilizer to make supplies for your Kerbals. Electric charge is easy to get using solar panels and mulch is created by kerbals. However, fertilizer is the one where i cant seem to think of a way to get other than shipping it from kerbin. Is there a way to get Fertilizer when on a ground base? (there is mining in KSP now but i havent touched it much as i recently started a new modded playthrough so im yet to encounter mining). Maybe certain resources can produce fertilizer, but im not sure which ones do and what machine is needed to extract and process this into fertilizer. This might be a noobish question but like i said i recently started a new profile with life support and therefore havent had much to do with mining yet. Thanks.

I stopped the development of this tutorial because I didn't have time anymore and because all calculations change after minor updates, and it takes a lot of time to interpolate all values and generate all graphs and formulas. So I lost interest because it changed too muchm but I know this is with the best intentions of Roverdude to make this mod as balanced as possible. There are some awesome people updating the Wiki right now. If you want to help, this is the thread: ___________________________ I'm doing a MKS tutorial because there is no one updated to the lastest version and I think it's a hard mod but also very enjoyable. Note that all information listed here was tested at the day they were added. It's not a copy of changelogs or from any other place, everything was tested by myself. There is a changelog at the bottom of this post, so if there was some update/bug fixing on MKS mod and I didn't updated, please tell me. TL;DR: Cut machinery chain off if you are starting/learning how to play with this mod by sending Kontainers with it. You'll not need to worry about it if you just do this. Machinery production is complex (but consumption is slow, for example: with a big industrial workshop, working at 22500% load, you'll need about 8200 machinery per YEAR), so don't bother with it before learning how to do supplies production to your kerbals. If you agreed to do this and don't want to read the full tutorial, just use the Base planner 1 - Supplies. It will show you what is needed to feed how many kerbals do you need to. Update (Nov. 24th): Math behind efficiency just got way more complicated after the last 3 updates of MKS. I got the calc to see how much machinery you should have to feed the number of kerbals you want with Duna and Tundra parts with efficiency, but I'm fixing the Fertilizer production now. The modifier of profession bonus is taking way longer than I wanted to figure out. Once I finish Agroponics, Cultivate (S), Cultivate (D) and Fertilizer production I'll release again. With th eedesign of the UKS modules for 1.2 i'm wondering how people are landing these modules on planets i can see the cradles but how are people landing multiple modules together to form bases. Is it just using vtol engines and then disassembling them after wards? Just looking for some ideas for inspirations short of landing them and tipping them over unless thats the only solution at the moment?
  16. I did a little Drill Calculator to show the amount of resources gathered per second. I always wondered how it worked and now I know. If anyone have any question, just ask! How it works (after you download a copy, because it's set as read only on google sheets): Chose Yes or No if you want to mine Dirt; Put the resource concentration at the point you will mine; Select drill to use; Select level of most experienced Engineer inside your vessel (there is also an option to put if you don't have an engineer around); Profit. You can also wirte the desired amount per second and it will calculate how many of that drill you need and how much thermal controllers you'll need. Hello, I'm wondering how to make a big base with MKS but now that only one Duna and one Tundra modules have planetary logistics distribution (only with things attached directly to it), how do you think it's a good way to do this? Sending a Duna Logistics module to every mining location to store supplies and the mined resources? (By the way, to make logistics work, does it need to have a pilot?) MKS 'Ranger' Scout-200 Power Pack can supply under full load can hold up to 1000 days, I think it's enough. But since it isn't rechargeable, and can't be grabbed (with kas) by one kerbal, I don't know if it is the best option. Thanks for any help!
  18. I am running a (somewhat) modded build, including USI Kolonisation Systems version 0.2.4, on KSP 1.1.3 (64-Bit). In both career and sandbox, many parts are missing from the VAB/SPH listings. These parts do appear (and can be sub-purchased in) the CTT, however there is some error whereby these parts cannot be listed in the VAB - I attempted to add them to a category manually, with the following custom category: The parts did not show in the custom tab, nor the normal tabs (including the USI one) nor on the search bar. All mods were installed manually, tell me if you need logs. If you need any more info, please tell me, otherwise I hope someone knows of a solution! (Or could be I'm just an idiot.... take your pick, just tell me the solution anyway)
  19. As a followup to this question, I've started using MKS Lite instead of MKS. I had my MKS base up and running smoothly, but I found that MKS Lite is more to my taste/gameplay. However, I cannot see the MKS launchpad anywhere? Is it not part of MKS Lite at all? Is it possible to "mod it over" somehow? Alternatively, what's the "best" way of building/launching rockets from my Munbase via MKS Lite/EPL? I've never used the EPL parts, as I liked the look and feel of the MKS-L replacement parts.
  20. In my most recent career save I've explored Eve, Duna, and Dres with probes and I have flotillas on the way to Jool and Eeloo to explore them. Since they're not due for another 2 years, I figured I'd send a manned ship to Duna to start a base there. I decided to make a multipurpose space ship rather than just a one-use rocket for the mission, so I built a pretty self-sufficient ship that should be able to house and feed four kerbals comfortably for a few years, with a modular nuclear drive section. With that in place, I decided I wanted to make bases on Minmus and Duna for replenishment for the first ship in a future fleet of interplanetary ships, but I haven't really looked at MKS much and it's looking to be much more difficult than it seemed at first. My plan was to send a robotic base at first to start harvesting resources and at least have all the infrastructure there so that when the crew arrived they'd have everything they needed to supply themselves with food and power. However, since I realized that all the converters need machinery to function, it seems like I would either need to send huge supply ships very frequently or set up large surface manufacturing plants that use technology I haven't unlocked yet. How do you all usually start with MKS? Is it necessary to set up giant supply chains or send shipments all the time, or am I just overestimating how much machinery they'll use? Pictures would be appreciated, since I'm also a little unclear about how to assemble all these parts.

Alright, so I'm now at the point where my MKS-oriented munar base is almost self-sufficient (The crew shuttles bring a small amount of materials now and then, which is enough to keep life support running for years). The goal was to have this be a staging ground for crewed interplanetary explorations, and with time I'm hoping to do the same on Duna and Laythe with time. These bases will also be where I build the required hardware (ships, additional base structures, etc). So now that I've gotten the base up and running, i'm having some problems wrapping my head around Extraplanetary Launchpads and how it integrates with MKS, so my questions are: * What materials do I need (produced or flown in) to build ships? I've accumulated a lot of MaterialKits from recycling leftover dropships while building. How do I turn these into rocketparts? (From what I've understood, RP is what I need to build and launch the ships) * Which structures do I need? I see that both MKS and EPL comes with launchpads, so I must admit I'm at a loss what to bring to my base. * Any other pointers/tips?
