  2. Ladies & Gentlemen, introducing the Stormwind fighter series. These crafts are long-range multirole fighters, quite reminiscent of the F-15, that can fit into almost any task, whether on the battlefield or fulfilling contracts. Stormwind Mk. 2 Especially when fitted with droptanks, this craft is quite long-range. Its large wings allow it to cruise at pretty high efficiency. While not as fast as the Stormwind II, this original variant is more efficient, slightly cheaper, and easier to use. Though it has some good traits, it also has stability problems, and will easily spin out if pushed too hard, although it is easy to recover due to its large wings and control surfaces. Stormwind Mk. 2 T (Two-seater/Trainer variant) This version of the aircraft is useful for pilot training, or missions where an extra crew member might come in handy. The addition of an extra cockpit has some serious impacts on the maneuverability of the aircraft, but it still flies quite well. Stormwind II Mk. 1 Now on to the second aircraft in the series, the Stormwind II. This plane is fast, boasting top speeds of over 1,000 m/s @ 10,000 meters altitude. Although it pays for this in reduced fuel efficiency (Read: This thing guzzles jet fuel like a champion chugger guzzles beer), it can still make it a significant distance if the operator holds back on the throttle and stays at altitude. In the second picture, you can see its interesting wing shape and canard layout. .craft files Stormwind Mk. II https://kerbalx.com/Wabbit/PA-Stormwind-Mk-2 Stormwind Mk. I hope you enjoyed, and I'd love to hear what you think, as well as tips on how these designs can be tweaked/improved.
  3. Good news everyone! The remnants of a vintage Jeb-Flyer flying machine was discovered last month! A curious engineer found the dusty pieces while rummaging though an old dilapidated hangar on the outskirts of town. Farnsworth Rocket Surgery has painstakingly recreated the antique contraption and added a few nifty safety features (just a seat belt). How to operate: 1. Eva out of the capsule and board the command chair. 2. Stage to separate the propeller from the flying machine. 3. Change focus to the propeller ( [ or ] ) and trim the roll all the way to the left (alt + q). 4. Make sure you yell Contact when the prop starts spinning! 5. Change focus back to the craft and stage again to release launch clamps. 6. Make sure SAS is on. 7. The flying machine will eventually lift off, eventually. Top speed in level flight is somewhere around 51 m/s. It can be flown without SAS if you trim the elevators a bit. It flies wonderfully! It may be the most enjoyable craft I have ever made. Special thanks to @The Optimist for the bearing design that I "borrowed". Download here! https://kerbalx.com/Dr_Farnsworth/Jeb-Flyer-MKII
  4. Though it may look, smell, and taste similarly to the real world Wright Flyer, the Orbitech Wright Flyer is different in many ways, the least of which is the presence of a single engine, a different wing design, and a electrical engine which has a habit of running out of power and/or separating itself from the main craft. Despite its flaws though, it shows that tiny engines can indeed be useful, even if they are a tad unreliable. Also, if it means anything to you, it's faster than the Spirit of St Louis replica I build for some reason. The craft is indeed based off the actual Wright Flyer, but I chose a different direction to go with it. It holds 2 crew members, but flies fine with 0 pilots due to the built-in probe core. Do not immerse in water over 18 degrees Celsius. Anyways, here are some cool pictures! Do be warned that this plane takes some more piloting expertise compared to my other craft, especially during take-off. Use trim to revv up the engine (ALT and Q), press 1 to lower RPM to safe levels, turn on SAS on main craft, and tap the D key at 35 m/s. Obtain your own today! https://kerbalx.com/WorkaroundIndustries/OrbiTech-Wright-Flyer
  5. I recently got a complaint from Jeb, who stated that he was getting bored of flying to Minmus all the time. I guess even the vastness of deep space and the serenity of the void lose their charm after a while. Jeb explained to me that there were those of little faith who stated that Minmus was as far as Kerbal-kind was ever like to get, and that a body as heavy and distant as, say, Eve would be forever out of reach. "Never!", said Jeb. "I shall personally go there and what's more, I'll prove it! I'll even bring back some rocks from the surface, so that none of ye may doubt the piloting skills of Jebediah Kerman again!" Next morning Jeb woke up terribly hungover, but unfortunately Bob and Bill had captured his entire ill-begotten rant on video, making it impossible for him to back out now. Luckily Bob and Bill both, after a nice chit-chat with Jeb who didn't threaten them with any form of corporal punishment at all, volunteered to accompany Jeb on this heroic mission. The only problem with their fantastic plan is that the unbelieving Kerbals in the bar the night before were not entirely wrong - the Space Program right now doesn't have anything that's even close to capable of returning home from the surface of Eve. Good old Werner von Kermann soon fixed that though, resulting in the following monstrosity: - The Lander - - The Returner - - The Complete Ship - The mission is to bring Jeb to Eve's surface, let him collect a nice bunch of science while there, and then return him and the samples safely to Kerbin. Bob and Bill will remain in orbit (in a duo impersonation of Michael Collins) to keep the return vehicle running. The imgur album shows several screenshots of the ship in the VAB, captions provided. http://imgur.com/a/DLmc6 Next post will contain the Kerbin ascent!

  7. By now, our propeller division engineers were getting pretty confident in their propeller plane making endeavours. However, one day, an outdated C-42 was given to them in exchange for a different prototype plane (Which will be revealed eventually). Strapping two stripped-down engine blocks to its wings in place of the rusted jet turbines and adding in a remote control core, it was revived. Capable of carrying up to 1/5 of its own weight for up to ∞ seconds at a maximal speed of 62 m/s, making it completely free to fly. Also, since its predecessor could also be modified to drop bombs, it can too! Contra-rotating props make for almost no torque, and it is capable of STOL. However, keep in mind it is still a cargo plane, and all stunts attempted have a large chance of failure. A large amount of supplies/crew can be fitted into the cargo bay, through the fancy ramps. Which, by the way, should NOT be open during flight. Specifications: Weight: 35.4 Metric Tons Length, width, height: 41.4 x 12.61 x 34.09 Takeoff speed: 35 m/s Maximum cruising velocity: 63 m/s at low altitude Ceiling altitude: 7000 meters https://kerbalx.com/WorkaroundIndustries/Workaround-Industries-SAS-plane-6-8-Super-Transporter

  9. After hours of debilitation over how to make a VTOL jet without strapping an unsightly engine to the bottom of the plane, our engineers were struck with a genius idea. What if, instead of 2 different specialized engines, we used one for both vertical and horizontal flight. And so, the AN-1 was born. Equipped with a prototype light bearing both light and strong enough to keep a jet engine attached, and a special small-diameter engine module and fuel storage. Capable of almost instant take-off and (theoretically) landing, it is the first in a long line of effective VTOL craft. Instruction Manual: 1) Decouple the engine module from the main plane, enable SAS on both. 2) Switch to the engine module, press D until it reaches maximum inclination, and press Z and spacebar. 3) Wait until you reach around 60 meters off the ground. Then, press A until it reaches minimal inclination, and quickly switch to the main craft. 4) Press (1) two times to lock the engine in horizontal flight configuration. Fly as you would a typical jet Landing sequence: 1) Cut horizontal speed to around 5 m/s 2) Disengage locking sequence 3) Fire downwards jet at 40-50% power until you touch down 4) Pray nothing important explodes. 12. Today i have something a bit special for you. Something that i believe is the first of its kind. It's not just a floating metal plate with a tower and some engines. This time it has a hangar deck and an aircraft elevator. Designing the carrier: The design of the carrier is a bit of a fusion of the IJN Zuiho and the U.S.S Independence CVL-22. Instead of building a custom hull for this one, i took the battleship hull and made the carrier around it. Due to this, it only took me 3-4 hours to build the carrier and another 2-3 hours to test it. It proved to be a sound choice. I was able to keep the part count well under a 1000, while still being able to create a big enough carrier that can actually support aircrafts. And because the carrier isn't as massive as the Killyoustrious, it's very, very solid. So no tweaking was needed. The only thing that needed tweaking, was the electrical system. ( i ran out of electric charge during the night time test). But that's where the problem lies, while it can store aircrafts, they have to be small. Yea, even the Gull is too big to really fit. I would need foldable wings to make it fit, and even then, there is the risk of the propeller hitting the roof and exploding. But, there is one that can fit. Sorry for the darkness, the lights ran out due to electricity running out. That issue was fixed later on with some few batteries and RTG's. The SeaRaider is currently the biggest that can fit in the hangar. It's rudder is currently about a millimeter away from touching the roof. But there is a little more room in terms of width. It's a damn good thing that i made the elevator bigger than what it was in my original plans (actually, there was no plans, i just built it and hoped it would work). So yea, there is a lot to be proud about in this one, but, it's still not perfect. The hangar needs to be taller and wider to really work, and the deck could be longer to make landings a bit more care free. But still, im very happy about how it turned out in the end. My first taughts when starting this project where: It's propably just going to explode into tiny bits as soon as the physics kick in. That's because i had no idea that how well the hangar walls and landing-gears would be able to support the weight of the flight-deck. Anyway, lets get on with the: Specs and picks: Top speed: 30 m/s. Length: 150m. Width: 33m. Height: 26.8m. Mass: 2.487 tons. Parts: 754. This one has a little over 70000 units of fuel loaded. And there you have it, a new type of carrier. I hope you enjoy it . 13. A bit of background for this project: I taught it was time to do a replica that has good performance and that doesn't have a ludicrous part count. So screw custom cockpits, interiors and rounded fuselages, the MK-3 parts will do. So, lets do something that works and is fun to fly instead of something that gets flown once and is then left to rot due to bad framerate. (I was supposed to upload this after the album problem gets fixed, but since projects where beginning to get packed up, im going to just use separate picks). On with the aircraft itself: Instead of going for fairings and radiator panels to make the fuselage more pretty and rounded, i went for a two layer fuselage instead. It actually produces some really good results while only using very little parts, tough passenger fuselages are a bit problematic, with the fuselage eating the windows. Cargo bays are also a bit useless, but it makes bomb-bays even more useful since they will have an actual "floor" in witch to mount the bombs. (You will get to see what i mean in a later post). Due to this part saving method, i was able to make the engines WAY more clean and better looking compared to the ones in the B-29 replica. Basically, because i didn't have to worry about the part count, i could use radiator panes to create a super smooth engine cowling (currently uses 11 panels per engine). The wing-tip tanks are just structural to reduce weight and in turn bendyness of wings. And yes, in real Connies, the antenna cables only attach to two of the rudders, the middle and left or right one. I taught it looked a bit weird, but i'm sure there are reasons for this. All and all, it's fun to fly and good to look at, but that's just my opinion. Specks: Top speed: 150m/s. Stall speed: 38m/s. Length: 56.4m. Wingspan: 61.1m. Height: 13.1m. Mass: 145 tons. Parts: 455. It should also have plenty of range to work with. Mod used: Firespitter. Download link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/3125njf09e73lgq/KTP-1490 Konstellation.craft?dl=0 And there it for you, a nice and clean replica of a Constellation. I hope you enjoy it .
  14. I have finally finished my stock coaxial helicopter. It is fairly reliable (only explodes in about 1 in 10 flights) The bearing is a modified version of @Jon144 design, except it has two different rotating parts. The helicopter flies quite well but can't perform any arial stunts (without violent explosions) but can carry about 7 tonnes of cargo It can carry 4 passengers and can fly for about 10 minutes To fly the helicopter apply about 1 notch above 2/3 throttle press space and then engage SAS (SAS in not strictly needed but makes it much easier to fly) 2/3 throttle on both rotors should be enough to hover and any less will cause you to loose altitude Adding or removing ore from the tanks will change how it flies (add more to the front tank if you are carrying cargo) Here is the download link: https://kerbalx.com/mrmcp1/Whirl-Wind Thanks for looking
  15. The product of an afternoon of toil, I present to you one of the ugliest propeller aircraft in existence, the PRMKII "Flywheel". Powered by a 24 blower turbine pushing a shaft nested in a heavily reinforced Stayputnik bearing, it can achieve a top speed of 80 m/s at high altitudes. Featuring a wheelless bearing, it can be much smaller than, say, the PR-0P series while having the same performance. Enough with the talking, here are the pictures already. In order to provide the high degrees of stability, the entire fuselage of the craft is part of the bearing. This keeps it from wobbling too much, but also can cause a complete structural failure if something goes badly wrong inside the bearing. A complex mechanism exists to stop the forces acting on the compressor blades from taking an unplanned vacation mid-flight. And unlike other turboprops, this one can fly easily with stock drag enabled, and possesses very good low-speed handling characteristics. It does take a gentle hand and some attention, though. To get your own, follow the link and follow all instructions in the KerbalX description. The engine is a wholly original design, which is a first for me. (Laughing audience footage) Flies fine stock, but using a mod such as V.O.I.D for engine RPM readouts and Pilot Assistant to keep it pointed properly is recommended. Optimal RPM of 2220 (37 rad/s) Get one today! https://kerbalx.com/WorkaroundIndustries/Workaround-Industries-PRMKII-Miniaturized-Turboprop-Aircraft
  16. The space program is bankrupt from a ludicrious mission involving 97 Mammoth engines, 100,000 units of rocket fuel, and a sparking Z-100 battery. However, Rockomax has given them 5,000 funds in bailout money and has created a "Score Sheet of Awesome", where 1 point is 1,000 funds for the KSC. Their list is below (and quite long): Here are the general rules: Your craft must cost no more than 5000 funds. Your craft must have at least one Kerbal on board for each lander. A single ISRU refuel is permitted. Mods and debug menu are forbidden. If you do not return, your score is halved. Science Route: You may do science along the way to perform a 100%-committed Research Rights Sell-Out for additional money when you get home. Transmitting science is forbidden. The start: Medium-mode Career save, all tech unlocked, 0 science, 5,000 funds. Rockomax's Top Roadtrippers @ManEatingApe with 130 points and an initial cost of 4,976, which means 125,024 funds recovered! Christ on a cracker...
  17. After picking up some old radio broadcasts on Kerbin's largest radio telescopes, they decrypted them to find some sort of television program. Despite warnings, they watched said television program. Inspired, they sent a letter along to a few private space companies, and this is what they got. 18. I know it is a shameless repost (already posted it in the generic SSTOs thread) but I had enough good feedback to give it a topic of its own. So, the craft is a flying saucer in the Grendizer style. It can just reach LKO and get back home (or dock anywhere in proximity of 85x85). Considered the huge overall drag it is a very good flyer, allowing extremely low landing speeds and the common flight envelope required for an airplane (looping/tonneaux standard aerobatics - very good stall recovery). It is indeed a little nose heavy and it suffers from a lack of power at high AoA, but hey, it is a dish surrounded by a teapot... If anybody wants to give it a try >>>HERE<<< it is the link. (and here the imgur album) 1) toggle rapiers 2) switch mode It takes off by itself, no input needed apart from full throttle. Climb above 10000m as soon as you can (not too much AoA), at 10000m level to gain speed.
  19. The volcanoes rumble. The radiation strikes the surface. The Great Red Spot is almost directly overhead. There is a constant rain of sulfur and other materials from the sky. In the distance, Europa drifts slowly along with it in the resonance. That place, is Io. Io is the main objective of this mission report. The main goal is to land (and hopefully return) a kerbal to Earth. From there, an outpost will be made to help any missions to Jupiter. Io will be a great place to explore. Day 1: Within our Grasp Although seeing Io at least from afar did not happen, this mission proved that Jupiter is within our grasp. We can get there, but can we get to Io? The only reason for not seeing Io was solar power. I now know the true power of RTGs. Hopefully tomorrow, we can see the plumes over the surface. But of course, failures are expected. It will be a while before a kerbal can walk on Io, and a base is set up. I don't have time to add titles or descriptions to the pictures. Let us hope for a better tomorrow. Day 2: Io See you! We saw Io! Although it was from very far away. After harnessing the true power (lol) of RTGs, the probe kept functioning long into the flight. After the transfer burn, the probe drifted along the void. Io was only a yellow dot on the cameras, but it won't be next mission. Hopefully. Jupiter looks cool too. The modified Jupiter rocket, modeled after the 2nd version, does not fuel. A new rocket must be designed to at least orbit Io. Tomorrow or the next day, my friends.
  20. first, i would like to give all the credit for the original idea to KmMango, who's thread was a success, faded, had a halfhearted comeback, then promptly died. This is the place to share with the world any stock craft that is armed with weapons that spit in BD armorys face and tell it that its overrated! There are no rules here, just creativity. tanks, SPG's ICBM's fighters, attack aircraft, bombers, naval craft, even armed space craft, lets see what you can do with only stock parts! here is the beginning of my air force with my 3 armed aircraft. The smallest one is nemisis, my escort dogfighter. it carries 4 unguided missiles and 2 machine guns. The biplane is Hyperon, my attack bomber\heavy fighter that has 12 unguided missiles and 1 unguided bomb. The one that resembles a rectangle with a hole in the middle is Demeter, my heavy bomber that is loaded with 12 unguided bombs, 2 guided bombs, and 3 guided missiles. http://imgur.com/oTpHNe8 http://imgur.com/ocaap4O http://imgur.com/WcCvKcl http://imgur.com/ey0cZiV http://imgur.com/lLOnfTL http://imgur.com/KV6hCoY
  21. Hi folks, I don't know if this is possible and I don't have an "entry", but I'm wondering if any of you have created low-tech spaceplanes before getting the last upgrades to the facilities. Restrictions on the plane: Must be capable of getting a payload to LKO. Small payloads are OK, large payloads are better. Realistically, 14 tons to orbit given the mass restriction would be fantastic. Must be capable of returning to the Space Center after deploying its payload. Doesn't have to be SSTO, but the less you drop the better. SSTO would be ideal. Doesn't have to take off on the runway, but c'mon, it's a spaceplane, not a rocket. I've already seen some very impressive SSTO rockets. No tech that costs more than 300 research to unlock -- that means NO: Rapiers, Whiplash, Aerospike, Ion (on a spaceplane?), shock intake, engine pre-cooler, or quad adapters (although bi-adapters are available and you can make a quad with 3 bi-adapters). That probably means Panther engines. Not more than 255 parts or 140 tons total weight. NO Mechjeb or WiseASS. The planes should be human-pilot-able, because hardcore stock If you really want me to score them, I will, but I'm honestly just wondering if it's even possible at this point. I am -working- on an entry but it decided to spontaneously fall out of the air at 6km and 600m/s just after the panthers started giving me 174kn thrust. And yes, that is two different flights with the wings and engines set up a little differently.
  22. A while back I posted a stock swivel jet VTOL plane (no infernal robotics mod used). It was a nice craft which failed to reach my original goal: achieve orbit with a swivel VTOL engine. The problem was my inability to dock in atmosphere to the main fuselage of a plane to gain access to more fuel. I do not know how but after many failed designs I got one model that docks fairly easily. I was unable to replicate it when trying to improve on this (my ultimate goal was a craft utilizing nothing but swivel engines). Introducing the Altamira MK4I (you can see how many iterations it took to get this working). Barely able to reach LKO, it can take off vertically and dock its VTOL engine to switch to horizontal mode and get just enough fuel to stay in orbit. This is a fairly difficult space plane to master. I only managed to reach orbit once. However with a bit of excess oxidizer left over, it can be reduced to save weight and increase the odds of success. Balanced by a single vector engine for VTOL, the craft chooses its own launch trajectory. Any attempt to wrestle the craft's yaw during the critical take off stage will result in the vector engine burning up the twin tail booms behind it. Shallow ascents are to be avoided if one does not want to burn up in atmosphere (except for when maximizing the scram jet momentum). This craft ascends steeply and quickly once it's set to horizontal mode so you can get to cruising altitude in no time. The horizontal latch can be doubled as a docking port to attach to space stations or other craft with narrow docking arms. After refuelling in orbit, it's ready to go on to other worlds (not tested yet). Despite 2 small docking bays that hold the VTOL engine & fuel, this craft doesn't do anything as it was designed for demonstration purposes only but that doesn't mean small science experiments can't be crammed inside. http://imgur.com/a/nNmOI

  24. Listen to this while flying . Here's a replica of the famous USAF/USN fighter/interceptor from the Cold War-era, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. Featuring fairly accurate scaling to Kerbal dimensions, and full function of twin Panther engines, this F-4 replica carries 2 crew in its tandem cockpit setup, and has a probe core in the upper fuselage for use as a training drone and/or for more accurate manned piloting ("fly-by-wire"). //ACTION GROUPS:// 1 toggles the engines, 2 toggles afterburners. If the demand is there, I might make a variant equipped with BDArmory munitions and gear. *WARNING: Be careful when taking off, as the rear landing gear might overstress if pushed too hard.* Download HERE
