  1. Inspired by the great works of our most prominent KSP modders, for the last few weeks I've been semi-secretly toiling away at a bunch of parts of my own. With enough content (and courage) to warrant a development thread, I present this mod under the working title of Some Very Alien Stuff (SVAS). Not surprisingly, the focus of this add-on is kerbalkind's discovery and utilization of various bits and bobs of alien origin. As of now, it is planned to depend on Angel-125's magnificent "Blueshift", as it reuses some of its assets, resources and anomaly spawning mechanics. Present Status of Mod is: Highly Experimental FULL ALBUM Currently available: Tetrahedron Scout Ship A variation of the Blueshift's Tetrahedron Anomaly; a two-seat, all-in-one part, controllable alien scout vessel. No IVA model. Uses WaterfallFX for its visuals (hull glow and exhaust). Powered by Blueshift's Graviolium (attitude control) and Electroplasma (very efficient non-atmospheric reaction engine). No RCS thrusters. Spawns as a rare class A space object/anomaly on a fly-by trajectory around a random body. Seize it while you can. There's not much else to it though, as this was a proof of concept intended to gauge my ability to get anything done in Blender and Unity. IMPORTANT: Dock with the anomaly (via a claw or a manually attached docking port of your choice) before boarding to convert it from a SpaceObject into a standard vessel lest the Kraken may disapprove! Alien Scout orbiting Kerbin More images of the scout: https://imgur.com/a/6cidRE6 Alien Excavator A surface attached alien drill. Small, light and efficient (200%/300%/300%), neither affected by heat nor generates any. Its planetary harvester runs on Graviolium and Electroplasma but comet and asteroid modules are (afaik) hard-coded to Electric Charge. Best mounted on an extendable arm. Beam and funnel made with Waterfall. Beam-based drill Alien Powercell A surface attached infinite source of Electroplasma to power the various alien gizmos. The hotter the surroundings, the higher its efficiency. Features a cliche animation (nothing says 'alien' more than a set of rotating rings) and a glowing blob of Waterfall effects. A powercell on a floating pedestal Tetrahedron Modular Ship An extension of the scout concept, this one has bits of mesh sliced off as separate parts for user customization. On a side note, aligning surface nodes on a triangular pyramid is not fun if you hate math. Modular Scout Ship with active Excavator Pylon Alien Pylons Attachable parts for the modular core: Blueshift FTL drive, Powercell, Antigravity generator, Excavator. There are also some other experimental/debug parts included but they should be hidden from view by default. In the works: Alien Fabricator An automated part printer. Requires one of the mods allowing for in-situ part creation (Simple Construction, Sandcastle soon and potentially OSE). The only way to produce new alien parts. Alien Tractor Beam Functions as a standard grappling claw but spurts Waterfall visuals. Alternate Chassis for the modular core: The result of "You discover Blender tutorials. Your blending skill increases by 2.3%". Plans, ideas and general direction: intended as overpowered endgame content for crazy fun and/or storytelling part names, prices, tech and resource requirements are far from intended values and subject to change alien parts should not be available in vab/sph, the only way to obtain them is through exploration and salvage (leveraging Blueshift's Anomaly Spawning system) or the Alien Fabricator ordinary (non-alien) parts should not be attachable to alien vessels add moar parts (isru, thrusters, alien death/heat ray, toggleable forcefield/collider, aerodynamic shell generator, alien themed fluff/fun props) and vessels! IVAs for the vessels rather unlikely? I'm relatively new to KSP modding (had a short stint in '16 but didn't progress very far). I have some coding and modelling experience but only as a hobbyist. Your constructive criticism is welcome and encouraged. Currently struggling at texturing to the point of passionately hating it. Hopefully for now, you will accept all materials as passable placeholders. Also if you happen to know a good tool for procedural textures with emphasis on hard surfaces - let me know. Generally I need something to cover for my utter lack of graphical sense and partial color blindness . And if you'd be willing to detail your workflows, that'd make me additionally happy. Just keep in mind that "I hand paint all my materials in mspaint.exe" is advice too exotic for me to follow. 2. Let‘s imagine that an alien spaceship or probe is coming in our solar system from interstellar space - How close would it have to be that we would be able to detect it and which methods could be used? Is there even a chance that we discover it until it has almost reached earth?
  3. (MPIO) = Main Planet Idea Only; I only have an idea for system's main planet (SLP) = System Layout in Planning; Currently planning system layout (WIP) = Work in Progress; Working on making system, note that System Layout may change in this stage (AD) = Almost done; Nearly finished with system (FNW) = Finished but Not Written; System is finished, but I'm currently too lazy to write it (FW) = Finished and Written; System is finished and I got off my @$$ and wrote it here -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So I recently decided to make an entire solar system for a li'l pink world I made art for, and I ended up making it a rogue star with a couple planets and moons. And then my mind decided "Hey, it might be useful for you to organize and share your stuff!", which is the most useful thing my brain has said in about a million years. I won't share the system I made for the pink planet, that'll be in a story I write that takes place in the system, but here are some other systems I'm making or are done with: Y-TYPES: T-TYPES: L-TYPES: M-TYPES: K-TYPES: G-TYPES: F-TYPES: A-TYPES: B-TYPES: My eventual goal is to put at least some of these systems in a KSP mod I'm planning that puts the Kerbol system in a globular cluster near the galaxy of Hoag's Object, a peculiar ring galaxy. And yes, almost all these systems will come pre-packaged with some sort of alien civilization(s), though B-types will only have colonies and I won't make O-types as they don't live long enough to have planets. Also, please note that I'm not taking suggestions for systems, though I'm open for suggestions for creative alien civilization(s)!
  4. We have a population of humans in interaction with one or more nonhuman intelligences. All of them are at least alien to the point you can tell they aren't human from a distance, meaning things like neanderthals are off the table. How would humans: - look at the other species? - look at themselves (compared to how we look at eatchother in human-only world)? - interact with the other species? - interact with eatchother?
  5. Anyone know what the heck is VVV-WIT-07?
  6. Picture is dark but the UDL Cheyenne is almost ready for pre delivery, includes a stowed and recoverable M577 app. Yet to be completed is the Sulaco https://imgur.com/gallery/HqmOeUb
  7. You see I remebered this planet and it got me thinking, the "goldilocks zone" on the planet itself (because it is tidal-locked) would only limit the diverisity, right? I thought of the mutation of life- one organism can go into hotter ares than the others, they reproduce and have babbies that have the same gene, a better adapted for warmth gene , or the normal resistance. This can go the "oppisite" (adaptaions for cold) way too so ... same. This proccess happens all the time, right ? and if so wouldn't that mean the limit of life going towards the extremes (poles) is only limited by the amount of time life has had to evolve. I guess this would be a hypothesis, huh?
  8. Title says it all. However, elaborate on what type of alien/what the situation is. E.g, 'what would you do if you saw a vaguely alien-like UFO in the distance,' or 'what would you do if you saw an alien ship land in your backyard.' Etc. Personally, if I saw a UFO, but never found out what it actually was, I'd most likely live in a tormented state of desperate curiosity for the rest of my life. If I saw an actual alien while alone in the forest, or, say, in my room, then I'd probably end up running away screaming. If it was in a public place, with other people around, then I might actually gather the courage to approach. Hopefully (The above photo was edited in GIMP. Sadly, the UFO is not real *sad face*)
  9. with the extensive discovery of exoplanets and discoveries near earth making other celestial bodies in the Kerbol Solar System, do you think aliens exist before you say no, listen to the evidence the milky way has over 200,000,000,000 stars each of those stars might have one or two planets around them, maybe more those planets probably have moons and that's only our own galaxy, there are hundreds of billions of other galaxies, each with hundreds of billions of stars, each with one or two planets, each with a chance of having a moon, the probability of us being alone in the universe is about 1 in 1x100100 at my rough estimate that took me longer to write then think the evidence against practically nothing
  10. This is Laythe, a moon circling the great green giant, Jool. For decades, kerbals have stared in awe at Laythe, planning, dreaming, wondering. The challenge is simple. Send a spacecraft to explore Laythe. No cheats are allowed (Hyperedit, debug menu...etc.). The probe must send back AT LEAST 500 Science! points. No parts can be lost without being planned before entering Laythe's SOI. You need to post part count, cost, Science! points collected, and at least one thing you found that was interesting(if you succeeded). Screenshots or it never happened. All non-cheat mods are allowed. "You Tried" Mode Fly past Laythe in 10 years or less. Easy Mode Fly past Laythe in 5 years or less, OR enter Laythe orbit. Medium Mode Land safely on Laythe's surface, it doesn't matter where. Hard Mode Land a rover on Dracoduck Island, Visit two island biomes OR land a boat and sample Laythe's ocean, and visit two ocean biomes. Dracoduck Island>>> Super Mode Land an autonomous, amphibious, walking robot on Laythe. Visit all 10 biomes with all available scientific instruments. Test for life. DMagic Orbital Science is recommended for this part. If you only play stock, that's okay. Dmagic is no requirement. Hyper Mode Any kind of manned mission.
  11. I am a massive fan of Kerbal Space Program and a huge fan of Aliens. While watching Prometheus the other night the thought struck how perfect it would be to create a plugin that allows you to recreate the missions in the Prometheus and Aliens storylines. It would be absolutely incredible to recreate the Aliens universe in KSP. Anyone interested in working on this?
  12. What do you think about Fermi paradox? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_paradox Here I want to be translator from Russian to English Alex Semenov's research paper about Fermi paradox. Here is original text: http://alex-semenov.livejournal.com/10688.html (warning! terrible Russian letters) (sorry for my bad English) epigraph: When partners can't agree Their dealings come to naught And trouble is their labor's only fruit. ____________ Once Crawfish, Swan and Pike Set out to pull a loaded cart, And all together settled in the traces; They pulled with all their might, but still the cart refused to budge! The load it seemed was not too much for them: Yet Crawfish scrambled backwards, Swan strained up skywards, Pike pulled toward the sea. Who's guilty here and who is right is not for us to say- But anyway the cart's still there today. Krylov. Author of translation unknown. Fermi Paradox Crawfish, Swan and Pike Or horoscope for members to next SETI conferencion So, Fermi Paradox, or Paradox of silent Universe. If alien's intelligence exist not only here, and exist on planets nearly other suns, why we can't see they? Probably, at first, this paradox discovered by Enrico Fermi in 1950 in lunch-time with his colleges, when they watched newspaper's caricature to the Aliens. It starts from jokes. However, it led to formulation this paradox. It's normal for physics - starts from joke, and end with research! Really, where is they? Remarkably, but have a time to thinking, you understand: each person, who understand this bug of world outlook, forced to patch it by one of three main ways. And your choice depend of what you prefer to sacrifice (to exclude, if in case use sacrifice in English to much expressively - Polnoch) to fix your world outlook. Three "facts" are connected in loop-paradox, like a Penrose triangle Fact1. The life is born all over the place and in all time, and achieve a highly developed mind's stage. (Here P1 = 1, true) Fact2. All of minds produce the Impact Wave of Penetration, and fill Galaxy, and in next step, Universe. (here P2 = 1) Fact3. The Galaxy, Sol System, and Universe around us empty. Nothing around! (Here P3 = 1) P1 * P2 * P3 = 1*1*1 = 1 But it is impossible! As we see, it contradict each other! And we need to get zero, false, not logical true! However, not each of three "facts" not a real fact, and not a established truth. It just conclusions, like a truth, and we can drop each of "facts". If you drop first "fact", we called you Swan, and our equation is: P1*P2*P3=0*1*1 = 0 If you drop second "fact", we called you Pike, and our equation is: P1*P2*P3=1*0*1 = 0 If you drop third "fact", we called you Crawfish, and our equation is: P1*P2*P3=1*1*0 = 0 Other choices doesn't exist (in original text - Polnoch. Probably he's right) Of course, here can be intermediate options, but, in fact, all manifold of rational options reducing to this 3 corner options, because you can get it by minimum stress, sacrifice only one "fact". Let's go to expand about all of options. Let's start from me (from author - Polnoch). I'm typical specimen of this "animals": SWAN (here author write not-censored joke - Polnoch) I prefer to solve Fermi paradox by Swan choice. Of course, I can't believe about our Universe hasn't any aliens(fact3), but I must to agreed with it. for me, probability of this very low. May be, P3 =0.99...9 ~ 1 . Next, idea about Wave of mind's penetration for me obviously. We'll start the Wave, or die out. No other choices for humanity. And, this conclusions must works for aliens, but were is it? I don't want to discuss here about necessity of The Wave, but i want to convince you about I'm believe in it(author - Polnoch)! If any of alien mind appear in our Galaxy before us, then the Wave must cover us! To millions years before! Observe the Fermi Paradox, the Swan must to sacrifice fact of aliens exist. The Swan must to suppose about the life is really rare in Galaxy. And the Mind is unique. May be we are alone in Galaxy, at least, first intelligent. If it's required, I suppose our unique state in Universe. By this reasons I interesting ideas of Create Filter. The density of Mind in our Universe must be very low, because the Wave don't cover us. May be, aliens exist at least 100000 light years or more... The Swan, to save world outlook, can drop "fact" of aliens worlds exist. The subjective proximity of "dead Universe" is P1 = 0.00...01 ~ 0 . In this case solution of Fermi Paradox is: P1*P2*P3= 0.00...01*0.99...9*0.99...9 ~ 0*1*1 ~ 0 PIKE On the one hand, the pike, like a swan, can drop a "fact" of Alien's marcs in Sol system, and in Galaxy too(I think, Alex Semenov mean in interstallar space here - Polnoch) For the pike P3~1. But by second hand, the pike can't drop idea about aliens Worlds. for it P1 ~ 1. The pike want to sacrifice "fact" 2. In any case Pike's answers about excluding interstellar travelling. May be one or two interstellar flights per each civilization history, or no one! The Wave of Mind is idiot idea, and doesn't exist! At first, interstellar flight is very hard and too much expansive! For high-tech civilizations too! At second, if it's possible, why high tech civilization to create the Wave? It's extensionally growth! It doesn't need a empty big spaces and resources! May be we trying to think about High Tech Mind by our history? May be they are prefer high tech growth? And sitting in one place during billions of years? For the Pike P2~ 0 And Fermi paradox solution: P1*P2*P3 ~ 1*0*1 ~ 0 I have opinion, about all of SETI-interesting persons are pikes! In this cases, high tech civilizations must to have chat with other civilizations to extend knowledge. All civilizations requires a help! And, we need to find similar signals, to connect to the Greate Ring (here Alex means "The greate ring" Novell of Inan Efremov- Polnoch) In this case, if anybody can't visit us, and anybody can't invade us, we can start METI transmitions. The World is very large, and brutal to the Mind, and radio(laser - Polnoch) communications is just only one way to get invaluable information. Fantastic - we can receive and transmit more-thousand's years information! In this case, at once, we can visit another civilization by digital copy of our brain. (Polnoch - I think, Pikes doesn't exclude dangerous of METI) CRAWFISH On the one hand, The Crawfish, like pike, can't drop a "fact" of existing Alien's worlds, P1~ 1. On the second hand, Crawfish dislike to be at home during billions of years, and like Swan, it wants to be the hitchhiker to the whole Galaxy! It permit s interstellar flights, like Swan, but millions and millions light years with non-mind planets with primitive life (planets with mold in original text - polnoch) the Crawfish dislike! And, observing the Fermi Paradox, the Crawfish has a conclusion about the Wave of Mind covered us to many years before! And we locate in cultural place, other civilisation(s) alive in around place, including our Sol system. P3 ~ 0: P1*P2*P3 ~ 1*1*0 ~ 0 But why we can't observe Aliens? Here the crawfish must to back: they are here, but don't want to tell us! They are invisible! Asking crawfish, we can get information, about he believe to the UFO, Ancient astronaut hypothesis, and in some of pseudoscience/pseudophysics ideas (it's Alex Semenov! I know some of Crawfishs with science-like world view! Polnoch). however, advanced crawfish believe to the E. Braswell probe. Theory about museum-preserve for the humanity(about aliens discover us, and safeguard us like museum, lab, zoo) better to the crawfish then died universe of Swan. Listen to yourself. What better for you? "Zoo" or "Died universe"? What is your choice? If zoo, you are Crawfish. Crawfish, usually stupid(in original text here is Russian idiom), Crawfish believe - at once we can accepted in family of high-tech civilizations, if we can't be more clever, more friendly, more humanity... Crawfish's opinion of the SETI problem (in text. Typo? I think, Alex mean Fermi's problem - Polnoch) look like a view of God believer. ==== Below locate conclusion, but I don't translate it because I get tired. You can skip it (no new ideas) or to use google translate. Sorry for errors. Difficult to translate a large tech text. It's my first experience. Here must be mistakes.
  13. So what are all the types of exotic life possible? And how crazy can they get?
