Make a craft as small as possible, That can reach as far as you want but if it is kerballed then they should be able to return (extra points for that) Points system : 10 points for in the Kerbin system 30 points (+10) for near interplanetary destination, if you do duna and eve then you get 80 points total+ 10 points if used mun gravity assist + 10 for minmus encounter + 20 for ike / gilly . (so basically more than jool v) Moho/Dres = 40 points (+10) Far : Jool/Eeloo = 60 points (+10) Jool three (vall, laythe, tylo) (flybys) = 90 points (+10) RULES : No parts more than 0.625m category No ion tugs than 510kg (so it is allowed) No more than 125 parts Not taller than 17.5m Gravity assists are allowed but must be clearly shown in picture/video Clear screenshots of every Important event (burns, assists, staging, etc.) No mods enhacing your ingame capability (Mechjeb pilot assist, part mods,)(I mean till the point you use the stock 0.625m parts its totally fine) Only Kerbal engineer NO CHEATS IF YOU WERE SEEN CHEATING YOUR ENTRY WON'T BE ACCEPTED All screenshots/recordings should have the deltav counter visible NO KRAKEN DRIVES Must have a picture of all your stages in extra screenshots or in kronal vessel viewer Must tell in the post where you are going No cheaty drives (but you can use the decoupler drive to give a boost during ascent from kerbin) No planet packs (i mean ones that add more moons to planets like moho and gilly) You can add side boosters to your rocket (just make sure they are 0.625 m in diameter) You can have only 3 layer of boosters not more than 8 boosters on the layer. Thats all of them. (any extra rules put in comments) Leaderboard will be moved around the thread pages as updates. (you will get a custom badge for completing this challenge)(winners will get their own badges) LEADERBOARD : 1. @Weak Player with 150 points for (eve 40 points + mun 10 points + 10 points for kerbin orbit + 90 points for jool 3) 2. @camacju with 120 point for using mun gravity assist + eve encounter ( its very tough to get encounters and do gravity assists ) 3. @Stormpilot with 20 points for minmus landing 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15.   2. Your mission is simple create the smallest plane possible. 1. The lower the score the better. 2. Add width, length, and height to get your score. 3. Only Jet engines are allowed 4. Part clipping is allowed, as long as You do not go overboard. Here is my submission to kick things off.   3. To any who decide to take this challenge: I may change things around for the challenge itself. There are some geniuses out there who are phenomenal at this art and skill, and I'm one of them, and in the very beginning (before I even started on this challenge myself), I gave set rules that must be met to succeed at this challenge. Those set rules, as I have come to find out, were easily met. As an overall point to be made, if you beat the original rules, that is easy mode, at least for this challenge. All is subject to change, however, if things are changed to be harder, then I will say it is for that reason alone, and will give a harder version of the original challenge. My weight limit WAS below 50 tonnes, and that was beaten 50 times over by one vessel, literally. Before we start, I'll give an example. Or two. Can range from a drone thats simply 6 pieces to a full blown barge that has 256. Like the one I built. Sadly my barge didn't make it out of LKO, and I used some of it's fuel to make that orbit stable, it wasn't gonna make it out of Kerbin's influence. However, it is a step int he direction I want to go, and this is what I wanna bring to the Micro-engineering challenge, so attempt 1 failed. Here's the challenge. Make the smallest vessel you can that can go to any planet in the system and is reusable 100% Requirements: cannot use any big parts (or if you do, use less than 5) Any part bigger than the OKTO drone core is too big, but I'll allow a small limit of 5, ya know, for a science JR or some such, maybe even a nice powerful relay/antenna cannot be over 30 tons. Previous original version (50t) was beaten, literally 50x over with 1 measly drone. Props to you, ya brilliant prick. Must have a stable orbit when changing planets (Optional harder version) Must be able to make a voyage between at least 2-3 planets in one trip Unrequired: Does not need to be an SSTO Does not need to be the size of a penny Going to and from the surface of celestial bodies Having a kerbal pilot the craft ___________________________ I wanna see what you people will come up with. I will be taking this challenge up myself, but I'm gonna be doing it in career mode. Extra props if you do it in career mode before I do Extra challenge, if you do it in career mode, the end product cannot be over 50k Because I don't know how much a xenon ghost engine costs, that pruce may be subject to change I plan to use about 6-12 ghost engines, soooooo....yeah, probably subject to change. They sure sound expensive. ___________________________ Micro-engineering challenge 2.0 (Med) Weight limit of 20t has to be able to go to and from a planet's surface, or two. That does not mean you have to do all of this without refueling Stabilized an orbit around every existing celestial body ___________________________ Micro-engineering challenge 3.0 (Hard) Weight limit 50t Must go to the surface and back to orbit of every celestial body in the game (except that one moon rock thing that's too small to have a gravitational pull) Hell, if you can land something on that damn rock, you get the overachiever award get something into kerbol's local atmosphere and fly it back out Good Luck. You wanted a challenge, WELL HERE IT IS, YOU MASOCHISTIC [REDACTED]!!! ___________________________ The original concept was build something out of nothing but small parts. Yeah, you can have a 1000 piece object if it doesn't exceed 30 t for easy, 20t for medium, and 50t for hard, and it can even be as big as a space station for all I care. You're really just supposed to use nothing but small parts, but whats the fun in not using something bigger every once and a while? Majority part limit is 0.625m.
  4. Splitting off from NotAgain's thread. What's the smallest STOCK satellite you can manage that is still useful? How many can you launch at once for new exploration? Forgive me for not posting my designs until I get back from a quick trip. No TweakScale, no Parts Packs, no MechJeb, no KOS, just plain old KSP. We all know it's stupid easy to pop a probe core with a solar panel into orbit and call it a satellite, so none of that. I want to see actual, interesting exploration designs. Probes to go where no Kerbal has. I play on Career, so my plan is to experiment on Mun and Minmun with various manned and unmanned designs, before launching a large carrier with as many small probes as I can to other bodies. Each MicroSat must be able to communicate and transmit science back to KSC... how they do that is up to you. Below are suggestions for science packages - innovative packaging is a plus, as is ease of use. Ideally, A Carrier should arrive in system, pop it's cargo bay or fairing, and then KSC just has to take command of each probe briefly to slurp up that delicious science. Keep in mind that this is exploration at its best - the only place with a communications network is Kerbin. Points will be awarded for most MicroSats in a single carrier rather than outright mass. More science returned gives more points. Identifying specific landing locations for future manned missions earns more points. Setting up a full commnet around the new body / system in the same launch earns more points. If you can do everything in one launch with a bunch of little probes, you win the internet for the day. Call it 25 points per probe attached to the carrier, 5 points for each science experiment on a representative probe (one probe each representing comms, orbital science, and landed science), 50 points for setting a full commnet, and 10 points for each degree of ease-of-use. The lowest being full user control of each probe, next being high-level control (like put SAS in retrograde and hit the throttle) and best being zero user input needed (or at least just a few action groups).   5. Mountain Thrust Aerospace presents: THE SCAVENGER'S DAUGHTER A single-crewed micro-SSTO composed of only 17 parts, the Scavenger's Daughter is: Cheap! Cute! Easy and fun to fly! Composed of only 17 parts! Cute! Capable! Composed of only 17 parts! Did I mention cute? What about the part count? Did I tell you about the part count?! In the image below, you can see the Daughter in a 70km x 70km orbit and still has over a kilometer per second of delta-V in the tank. The craft's excellent range and uncrewed flight capability make her perfect for LKO rescue missions... and not a great deal else to be honest. But look how cute she is! Nnnggaaawwwwww! Vital statistics are given in the groovy schematic: Flight Manual: Ach, it's not that hard, to be honest. I'm sure you guys can manage. Just try not to explode on the way up. Action Groups: 1.
