Docking ports can serve as decouplers however. But you'll have to decouple them manually or through an action group as they can not be staged.

If you don't mind modding, Tweakable Everything allows enabling staging on docking ports.

You could also use the claw that way aiming to dock isnt important.

I don't think the claw can be used as a decoupler, you can't have anything attached to it in the VAB.

You can lock staging with mod + l.

Decouplers use explosives to decouple. I don't think you can join back something that got blasted out. Then again, the kerbals can make spaceworthy craft from junk left lying on the side of the road...

Heh, I've done this too. I staged off the landing gear once, and the perfectly good return ship was laying on it's side...incapable of taking off...
