NASA wants to send humans to Jupiter in the 2040s

LOL... NASA wants to do WHAT?

Give me a break, we haven't even sent a human into an orbit around another LOCAL planet, and we're talking about Jupiter?

Depending on how funding goes. I figure SpaceX is going to make a move to land on Europa. After all, there is a movie called the Europa Report in which took the Europa One capsule 19 months to get there. Not saying it will happen but hey it might be true.

Despite what you may have seen on certain sites, SpaceX is a launch provider, not some hybrid of NASA and Jesus. They have zero motive to land anything on Europa without being paid, and they don't remotely have the resources to do so independently is they decided they did.

And I'd like to visit a few other star systems tommorow. Unfortunately the probability of both is more or less the same.

If an asteroid hits the USA and does a moderate amount of damage(say, like hitting Romney) NASA will get a lot more funding.

Imagine the conspiracy theories after that. :D

While I don't disagree with the fact that NASA is not getting the funding it needs and that the US is absolutely falling behind in space exploration, has it occurred to any of you guys that even just TRYING to be optimistic about human spaceflight in the near future might help push other you come into contact with to support it?

That's exactly what I've been talking about. With the kind of attitude I'm seeing here, we'll never get anywhere.

Instead it's all this defeatist talk about how "no one else will ever care about space. Let's just give up."

In the Jupiter system there's not much that a human can do that a robot cannot. If you're drilling for ice, a robot can do that. If you're exploring oceans underground, a robot can do that. If you're planting a flag, a robot can do that. Unless there's life there, I see no reason for humans to go until we've used up all the space in less hostile environments like Mars or Earth first.

We as in America? Or we as in the human race?

Plenty of Cosmonauts have been in space more than 6 months at a time, on Mir.

I am european, so i wouldn't speak for american people.

You're right, some people could live for 14 monthes in Mir, though it's still protected by earth's magnetosphere. I doubt anyone would surive the same trip outside Earth's magnetosphere.

Eh..

It depends on the amount of shielding.
