more like shrapnel)

i like it.

i just remembered torpedoes launched from torp.frigs from homeworld 2)

Not gonna lie, I already thought about weaponizing those fairings. :D

Who's to say 1.1 wont give you the option for bag of crisps vs clamshell?

From the sounds of it, v1.0 will already deliver that feature.

I have a suspicion that even if the Squad implementation of fairings adds the curved shell option, and allows separating them in whole pieces, I will still likely use Procedural Fairings. There is something to be said for unintended usage options, and the fuselage bits together with the highly customizable fairing bases just seem like the far more usable option. Click-outline fairings will be good by themselves I'm sure, but I have doubts about things like being able to adjust them after placement, or reusing custom-shaped pieces of shell for design elements, or doing any of the other things you can do with PF. PF interstages are especially great, allowing to dynamically create and resize "virtual cargo space" within the rocket - I somehow doubt the stock implementation will allow for something like that.

Going to wait and see how it actually works first of course. :)

If the options for separation are too limited, I'll just stick with proc fairings.

My hope is that we can control the sections lengthways and radially. Then it would be worth using.

Obviously we would want no radial sections to be a thing too...

Also the ability to burn engines through a section still attached to the current craft.

rocket_apollo_11_first_stage_separation_edit.jpg

These are things we can already do, we should be able to replicate them or the new fairings would be found... lacking.

Im sure hoping these fairings can be much wider. I REALLY hope you can fit an entire capital ship inside one of these as its painful trying to take off with wings on a ship.

And i dont know details, but i sure hope we dont have to separate them in alot of parts, its not like im a realism enthusist (most of my craft would never work irl anyways), but i just dont like the look of alot of random debris flying around when it looks nicer to have larger parts. But even if the separation is this way and only this way, ill live with that, still way better then no fairings.

Nothing in the game is really a direct analogue of real life,

...snip

I and probably a majority of folks would disagree with you - everything in KSP has a direct analogue in real life ---> including the decades old meme of "Little green beings from another planet".

(The modifier "Direct" vs. "Indirect" in this case is superfluous due to the definitions of analogy and analogous)

ON TOPIC: I "Think" the video was rushed. The only thing you really get out of it is a basic awareness that fairings can be built up bit by bit.

I stepped frame by fame through the video - in the end, the fairings separate into Kessler style fragments.

Also, and most importantly ----> Snaps to the Art Department for pulling in a VERY NICE 1950's / 1960's vibe with the fonts and styling. Very Very Nice Indeed!

So what we know now based on videos only:

1) Female Kerbals can clamber with a smile

2) Fairings can be built up in edgy vertical segments

That's a stunning picture of Saturn V stage, falling away.

It is indeed, I found it with a GIS for "Apollo stage 2". I had not seen it before, I assumed there were no pictures of that particular event.

E : I would hope that, at this stage, being within days of 1.0, it would not be too much trouble for just a few words actually here on the official forum along the lines of "We know there are concerns so we would like to tell you that fairings can be ejected in user selectable sections and segments allowing single rings up to (whatever the limits are)"

It's almost as though their thoughts are "We won't give them enough info on the new features as they would complain in time for their issues to be addressed before release" but that can't be right.

Why people are so whiny about the fairing separation? I don't see anything wrong with it

Because when you take a good, close look at the separation at the end of the video, it breaks up into six pieces instead of two.

Hard to see, but when you do it looks sloppy.

Come on, it's not as if any mod has ever been able to implement fairings right... Squad has no previous experience to build upon and we as players have no reference point against which to compare their implementation...

I have to disagree with you: Frankly, JohnFX has presented a wealth of "real world" reference points from not only his pictures but also his interest and specialised knowledge. Add to that many of us have experience with procedural fairings - so we do have a basis for expectations and comparisons.

Yeah... I think I'm gonna stick with Procedural Fairings...

Me, too.

The tip should be rounded, I cannot recall seeing any real fairing actually come to a point. That alone would make them look better.

Are these fairings just for aesthetics, or does the (supposedly improved) aerodynamics code make these fairings beneficial to flight efficiency?

The latter. Fairings, nosecones, other prettifying things, etc. will make ships fly more efficiently.

Fairings and nosecones will help now that the aerodynamics will be updated to make sense.

Wallygator, have you ever heard of sarcasm ?

Things like sarcasm don't translate through plain text. That's why we have these:

Yes, but it is sometime hard to discern via written text. I interpreted your comment based on the text only.

My point stands that a lot of people (including Squad) have a realistic basis of opinion regarding how fairings work in the real world.

We will see how the stock implementation works, and then the conversation can continue.

Yes and parts within a cargo bays or fairing will be shielded from aero forces like its already been for a while with FAR.

Cant wait to see their final version of the aero model

Hopefully 1.0 will be polished enough not to be harshly rated by reviewers which is very important to ensure a decent amount of new players.

Ultimately how fairings separate doesn't affect gameplay, so I'd have for them to take time to fix a working system when they could be working on final optimizations. Visually though: clamshell>confetti
