Question: if JAXA (Japan) or CNSA (China) magically received a larger budget to enable human mars exploration, what would they name their colony? No "New/Neo [insert Japanese/Chinese city here]"

(just a note - Mars in Japanese/Chinese is ç«星 [Kasei/HuÇ’xÄ«ng or "fire star"])

That's more something for the Moon... especially if it is located in Mare Tranquillitatis.

You can in fact expect this to be a rule of the thumb: a new settlement on a different celestial body is likely to be named after the area it was set up in. Not guaranteed, mind - but very likely. There are two reasons for this:

1.) Most areas are already named, sometimes down to quite fine detail, since craters offer lots of landmarks. Here on Earth, new settlements were often created in places where the settlers themselves decided the name because they did not yet have any name for it. This will be different on other planets.

2.) The first settlements are not going to start as settlements. They're going to start out as research bases, and those have an even higher likelyhood of being named after where they are located/what they are researching. Later these bases will develop into settlements, because settlers will stay where the infrastructure is. And they will continue to bear the name they always had, maybe with small modifications.

As such, it's possible that for example a research base erected in Endeavour Crater, which Opportunity is exploring right now, might start off as "Endeavour Station" and later becomes "Endeavour City".

Or well, you know, since Endeavour Crater is frickin' huge... they could go smaller. Start off as "Marathon Station" (in Marathon Valley, Endeavour Crater), later becoming "New Marathon" (since Earth already has a city called Marathon, in Greece).

How about Armstrong-Aldrin, Kinda like Amundsen-Scott in the antarctic

Then I would opt for Gagarin-Armstrong, after both of the first men.

Before anyone comments: Shepard was the first American in space, but that is just geography. It is time to move past that. Gagarin was first in space and orbit, Armstrong first on the moon.
