Counting down the days until KSP 1.0: Day 3

Anyone else see a kOS on the cockpit console?

Do we haz scriptable autopilot?

The original kOS modder is back with an improved version of his original mod, and that screen in this trailer might be a relic of an un-used asset he had originally created. There is a video/thread somewhere that he explains it's origin in.

Are those airbrakes?

I think they're backwards though *has no idea what direction they're supposed to face*

Aerobrakes are supposed to disrupt the airflow around a wing, mostly cancelling the lift, so the whole plane's weight is on their landing gears for maximum brake efficiency :) (if part of the weight was supported by the wings, the landing gear would have insufficent friction) - now, on airliners, if they are 'armed' aerobrakes will deploy automatically when the landing gear touches down the landing strip :) now, if they were opening 'backwards' and a malfunction occurs during flight, guess air pressure would make it much harder to close back :) whereas in the position they are, if you cut the hydraulics, the aerobrakes would close back on their own :)

Airbrakes you say? NO! Soooooo much more!

-Deployable winglets! Empty fuel tanks Change your center of mass? Now Ill be able to change my CoL around where i need to mid flight!

-Stub wings! Want that capsule to glide back instead of going ballistic?

-Deployable stabilizers! Wanting to do a SpaceX style 1st stage return? now you can! (easier anyway)

and then theres all the other expected stuff....

But... imagine if you could attach stuff to the moving portion of it..... that would be revolutionary in KSP...

EDIT: doubt moving joints will be in 1.0 or even 1.1 for that matter.... but maybe someday

Actually, if they are also disrupting the lift they are technically acting as spoilers. An airbrake is essentially a flat plate stuck out in the airstream for lots of drag, but with no affect on lift. They are often used in slippery aircraft for descents.

Sorry, but I believe you are describing spoilers. Airbrakes are NOT designed to affect lift and are usually built on to the body of the aircraft, looking very much like the ones seen in the teaser video. They are used to dump excess speed during flight (often during the approach to a runway) without risking the aircraft stalling and falling -- which is what would happen if spoilers were used.

You are right about airbrakes being mounted that way round for safety reasons, but there is another reason: they are more effective opening that way, because they create more turbulence.

Yes yes yes. Come on guys, just one moving hinge... just one little part, it doesn't have to be fancy or anything... squad pls

Zombie infestation time. Imagine a hoard of zombies outside of SQUAD headquarters yelling,

"give us hinge...squad...plss"

Spoilers spoil the lift.

Air brakes produce drag an can as well be mounted on the wings but mostly in the rear as shown in the video.

And then there are flaps and slats and oh - pls someone make/find a tutorial, so we are prepared for LIFTOFF.
