Not really sure why people feel they need the terrier to get to orbit or even to the Mun, sure it's a bit better on fuel and lighter but it's not strictly required.

The obvious answer to me would be that you very quickly get the micro landing legs, so if you want a larger engine you need to make a kooky contraption if you don't wish to land on the engine bell itself. That said, I think landing with a mk1 capsule is sort of absurd, as there is no possible view of the ground (try flying a landing in such a craft in pure IVA).

Nobody in the history of mankind has ever started a game on Easy, especially not when there's a Normal. Not even in Touhou.

I generally agree with this hyperbole. I'd figure most people start games on whatever the default difficulty is.
