"Broken mods, disappointment..."

I would like to commend the KSP staff for a great release. There are some pretty awesome vanilla parts that are simply great. As I was flying some aircraft I noticed some trees! TREES! Yes... something to break up the barren landscape was much needed! Again, pretty awesome.

As with any update, I lost a few mods to compatibility issues: B9 Aerospace, STX, SCANSAT, SETI Greenhouses. Of the most painful mods to lose was B9 - simply for the landing gear. The one thing that really needs to be added to the stock parts is landing gear of differing heights that would make it possible to have wing-attached gear and nosecone gear on smaller one and two Kerbal aircraft.

My disappointment is not in the KSP game itself, but that the large number of mods that I lose each time the game is updated. Not sure what we can do about it.

Contrary to popular belief, modders are real people, with real lives. Give them time, and they will update, or if the mod has a tolerant license, update it yourself.

Wow... that certainly didn't warrant that response. Cage the anger, man! We all have real lives and believe me, I am very aware of it. All I was suggesting is that it would be nice for those who program KSP to release some sort of hints as to what major changes in programming are going to occur - as a means of giving modders a heads up in what to expect. That way, they could begin tweaking before the release. And for grins and giggles, I was working on a mod in .25, but never got it finished before .9 and 1.0 was released. Between family demands, job demands, publishing schedules, and public speaking, I have a full plate...

But be aware there are some modders out there that no longer mod AND have simply walked away from the game without updating their forum announcements - something like "I am no longer modding or updating this mod..."

Look at it this way... When the mods do get updated, they'll be likely to stay fresher longer. Plus, there are so many changes that you may as well enjoy stock for the extra day or two (week or two maybe) that it takes for the more active and less obscure mods to get going again.

Um yea sorry it kind of did. I would counter with "hey man, if you don't want the hate, write what you mean rather than assume we can read minds". I would agree with something constructive, like Squad having some sort of modding program whereby modders could get maybe a final beta ahead of time to get their mods ready before release. But your OP had none of that constructive talk and read like someone just complaining that modders didn't have their mods updated fast enough.

Don't think Robotengineer was being angry, I agree with what he said.

tbh it's just one of those things we accept; each update means a week or two playing stock while waiting for mods to update (and really, if we're going to do good testing, we need to play pure stock to start with).

Problem with releasing versions to modders so they can update ahead of a release is which modders do they give an early release to? If they select some "key" ones, someone is always going to feel left out and disadvantaged for not being "one of the chosen ones". Or do they give it to all modders, in which case it's more likely that someone will spill some beans to the community, and some (less scrupulous) people might even pretend to be a mod maker as a way of getting early access. I think the way it is is just fine.

Actually, that seemed like a pretty measured, and diplomatic response to me. If something that the devs have no control over is updating more slowly than you'd like, do it yourself.

That came across more harshly than I intended. I would like to echo katateochi in response to the rest of your post.

Umm... We have had trees for a long time.

No, just a general announcement, would not really have to be very specific other than "changing the way we do the background textures..." or even "changing scripting language where X no longer means..." just keys such as this. No need to say, hey, we are going to add this new feature, this new part, etc.

My main disappointment is that I didn't do a complete vanilla download (as I did with .90). For some reason, I didn't think that it was going to be as much as a complete overhaul (and I was looking forward to the barn) and that so many of thedownloaded mods would be incompatible. I do understand the works in progress, and am patient, just wish there were a better way to do things. AVI is very good about locating most of the mod updates... I am definitely going to make my mod AVI friendly before I release it...

I do understand about the unscrupulous modders... too many already.

General announcements, tips, hints and so on are pretty much useless. Without the actual code in our hands there is next to nothing that can be done to update what needs to be updated when a new version is released.
