1.0 Aerodynamics

Description

So, 1.01-1.02 rebalanced the aerodynamics quite a bit. The atmosphere is not soupy compared to 0.90 but it is in comparison to 1.0. It made SSTOs harder, rockets harder and most importantly it broke my stock Ranger which now can't aileron roll at all. So I've modified Physics.cfg to the 1.0 values. The original file was made by Squad, I take no credit for it, I've just modified some values.

Installation

1. Download the file

2. Go to the folder where KSP is installed

3. Copy it inside the folder with KSP.exe

4. When asked, replace

5. ???

6. Profit!

Download

Changelog:

did the 1.01 and 1.02 update really make changes to the aero system? I didn't see anything about it in the changelogs. Curious, because ever since those updates, all my craft that flew just fine in 1.0 flip out between 3000 and 9000 meters.

From the 1.0.1 changelog:

* New values for physics global drag and lift multipliers.

Did you upload the wrong file? I was checking what you changed and the uploaded file and the 1.02 default have 0 differences when string compared.

Can confirm. For those of you playing at home, these values are from 1.0 and are the first 5 lines in the Physics.cfg file (I think they're the only thing that changed).

dragMultiplier = 6.0
dragCubeMultiplier = 0.06
liftMultiplier = 0.038
liftDragMultiplier = 0.03
bodyLiftMultiplier = 8

dragCubeMultiplier = 0.1
liftMultiplier = 0.055
liftDragMultiplier = 0.025
bodyLiftMultiplier = 10.7
dragMultiplier = 8.0

Both my current physics.cfg (original 1.0.2) and the one provided by OP (supposedly 1.0 configs) seem to be exactly the same. Not a single character out of place. So, I think OP is providing the 1.0.2 physics.cfg file, instead of the 1.0 one.

Now, this post provides a code claiming to be the 1.0 physics.cfg file, and here are the differences:

dragMultiplier = 8.0

dragCubeMultiplier = 0.1

angularDragMultiplier = 2

liftMultiplier = 0.055

liftDragMultiplier = 0.025

bodyLiftMultiplier = 10.7

aeroFXStartThermalFX = 2

aeroFXFullThermalFX = 3.5

aeroFXExponent = 3

thermalMaxIntegrationWarp = 100

spaceTemperature = 4

solarLuminosityAtHome = 1360

solarInsolationAtHome = 0.15

convectionDensityExponent = 1

convectionVelocityExponent = 3

convectionFactorSplashed = 300

fullConvectionAreaMin = 0.2

fullToCrossSectionLerpStart = 0.8

fullToCrossSectionLerpEnd = 1.5

machConvectionStart = 2

machConvectionEnd = 4

machConvectionExponent = 3

partEmissivityExponent = 4

radiationFactor = 1

convectionFactor = 40

newtonianConvectionFactorBase = 2

newtonianConvectionFactorTotal = 3

NewtonianVelocityExponent = 1.5

conductionFactor = 10

internalHeatProductionFactor = 0.03

aerodynamicHeatProductionFactor = 1

standardSpecificHeatCapacity = 800

The ones marked in blue don't exist in the following code.

dragMultiplier = 6.0

dragCubeMultiplier = 0.06

angularDragMultiplier = 2

liftMultiplier = 0.038

liftDragMultiplier = 0.03

bodyLiftMultiplier = 8

aeroFXStartThermalFX = 2

aeroFXFullThermalFX = 3.5

aeroFXExponent = 3

thermalMaxIntegrationWarp = 100

spaceTemperature = 4

solarLuminosityAtHome = 1360

solarInsolationAtHome = 0.15

convectionDensityExponent = 1

convectionVelocityExponent = 3

fullConvectionAreaMin = 0.2

fullToCrossSectionLerpStart = 0.8

fullToCrossSectionLerpEnd = 1.5

machConvectionStart = 2

machConvectionEnd = 3.5

partEmissivityExponent = 4

radiationFactor = 1

convectionFactor = 40

newtonianConvectionFactorBase = 1

newtonianConvectionFactorTotal = 1

conductionFactor = 10

internalHeatProductionFactor = 0.03

aerodynamicHeatProductionFactor = 1

standardSpecificHeatCapacity = 800

Edit: Double ninja'ed. :)

Either way, I don't really have much of an issue with the drag, just the lift, which is causing problems with gravity turns.

Also reentry, but god knows which setting that is because both sets of variables had the same effect. I'm thinking maybe convection density is the setting, but I don't have any idea what the numbers needed to dial that in are.

Have you actually tested these settings? I used your config file and started hitting the ground at 150m/s with the parachute fully deployed. I'd pull the chute at least 2k up, it'd slow down a bit but it'd barely slow down when the chute opened up. This is with just a Mk1 capsule.

Worked fine for me with a solid strapped to it as well. You try verifying files then applying the fix?

I did, something else is wrong.

I verified the files, opened up the game and tested it, no problem. Applied someone else's suggested changes and launched a mission, same problem.

It must be another mod, but I'm not sure which one. Here's my modlist

I'll probably just wait until Squad fixes the aero and the rest of the mods update.

These are the same exact settings as in 1.0.0, why don't you open physics.cfg manually? You should see Drag 6.0 DragCubes 0.06 Lift 0.038 and Bodylift 8.

If you do see those, the problem is a mod. If you don't see those, then this OP isn't right.
