what happened in april 2013

i joined the forums in late '14 or early this year idk. i keep hearing about this thing from april 2013, something happening to the forums. what was that?

The forum server crashed, causing every post before that date to be lost.

Those of us who were there before are survivors of the April '13 forum meltdown.

I joined shortly before the meltdown, didn't lose a lot of posts

There was an old backup copy of the board, so you can still find posts from before 2013 on here, but there was a gap between that old backup and April 2013 where everything was lost (posts, memberships if you joined during the gap, reputation points, etc.).

Basically, we learned that DDoS is NOT all fun and games.

SQUAD used cloudfire services, I believe, and one the clients of the cloudfire service was suffering a DDoS attack; per agreement cloudfire offloaded some of the heavy incoming requests on to its other customers, this has the effect of keeping one site up while slowing down all the others. Unfortunately it caused all kinds of chaos on the server and caused massive corruption.

Basically, squad's server wasn't designed to take the load that cloudfire unleashed upon it and it suffered multiple forms of buffer overloads which pushed tainted code into the stack and hence destruction.
