Welcome to the single stage to your choosing challenge

Version 2!

Now that everyone has had a chance to play around with the new aerodynamics, I am going to revive this challenge. If you want to check out what we accomplished last time, check this out!

This challenge will be for almost anything and everything single stage. Lets see what we can accomplish without making a mess of orbit.

I may modify or add rules depending on how this challenge pans out.

If you have any suggestions for rules or formatting, feel free to send me a message.

Rules and Restrictions

  • No single stage to orbit, low Kerbin orbit lifters, liquid jets that "just fly" (or hover), Kerbin circumnavigators, or ion gliders.
  • Your craft may not use any additional stages in the staging controls, action groups are fine though.
  • No re-fueling with other crafts. Feel free to create a single stage craft that can harvest and convert resources though, I would like to see it.
  • Your craft may separate, but all pieces must be recovered together. No using SSTO lifters or ditching stuff in orbit.
  • It's ok to lose pieces of your craft while attempting to show it off (i.e. crashing), but it should not lose pieces by design.
  • Information, autopilot, and visual mods are allowed. No other mods please.
  • All stock parts, physics, and solar system. No file tweaking or modding please.
  • No over powered game exploits like kraken drives, or infinigliding. Part clipping is allowed.
  • No debug menu shenanigans. Please be honest, nobody likes cheaters.
  • Must provide pics of your accomplishments, my bandwidth usage limit doesn't like videos. Embedded albums rock! If you don't know how to, you can learn here.
  • If you like this challenge please rate it, and give me rep!

Scoring

Please include at least 3 pieces of information for scoring, feel free to add additional information that you feel is relevant to your design. If I start to see some competition I will create categories, but for now here is what people have accomplished with a single stage.

Here is my entry to get things going

Sooooo.... At first I was a little dissapointed that nobody had even commented on this challenge, and it just slipped onto page two. But now I understand why. It is REALLY HARD to make Single Stage to ANYTHING!!! But having said that, I am a little surprised that nobody has come up with at least ONE Single Stage to Mun or some such. I mean, check this out.....

Really nice Wanderfound! I'm going to create a modded etries chart because I like yours so much. I do have to point out though...

  • Information, autopilot, and visual mods are allowed. No other mods please.
  • All stock parts, physics, and solar system. No file tweaking or modding please.

I noticed that you used Infernal Robotics and Ferram Aerospace Research. Which raises two questions for me.

1. Would the craft make it into orbit with stock aerodynamics?

2. Can you make a stock craft do the same thing?

Infernal Robotics was installed in the game, but it isn't used in that design. The mining parts and scanners etc are all stock, as is the rest of the ship.

But it is a FAR design. Someone could probably make something comparable in stock aero, but it won't be me. Like a lot of the FAR-crew, I find stock aero intolerably unpleasant to play with (it's a lot better than the old aero, but it's still not a patch on the real thing).

If anybody wants to try and fly it in stock, feel free; it would probably even work if flown right (i.e. ride the edge of overheating until you've maxed the jets for both speed and altitude, raise the apoapsis on the oxidiser and circularise with the nuke). No guarantees, though.

Ahhhh, the nuke is on the belly. I though it popped out the back once out of orbit. My bad.

I might try it out, I just fear that the air breathing engines wont breath as high, so it will probably rob some deltaV from the design.

?!?!?!?!?!?!

What is going on people? Is this challenge to intimidating? Am I taking all the destinations?

This is the only challenge I seem to be doing recently, I'm having so much fun with it. But I'm considering asking the moderators to move it to the spacecraft exchange and post craft files unless people start participating. If you can't think of anyplace to go, just try and beat one of my designs. And if you can't, rep me please. I'm starting to think that I'm the only one with any interest in SSTO+ spaceplanes.

I mean check this out!

Yeah, that isn't going to work. I can't even get it transonic.

I have a six-seat SSTO plane that can flyby any destination other than Moho, and return from most of them.

Pic in LKO:

(Disclaimer: I have HyperEdit installed but didn't use it for this ascent)

I haven't got the stats on it available to me at the moment, I'll put those up when I get back to my KSP computer.

It costs 110,120 and masses at 48,400kg on the runway.

It's not really clear to me how the entries are being scored.

So add some turbojets. Plenty of room under and behind the wings. :)

You do it! It's your plane. :P

It's not really clear to me how the entries are being scored.

I wasn't scoring entries yet, because I hadn't seen anybody trying for the same goal. I'm thinking of creating a category for each goal though, to encourage people to try and beat each others designs. In which case scoring would be dependent on the goal.

Does anybody think I should change it to something like that?

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
