Black only hud ladders

Is there any news (or hope) on the problem where us Linux users cannot have HUD Ladders in any color other than black? While they're barely visible against the backdrop of the sky, they're completely invisible in space, or at night.

I spent a couple of hours on this last weekend, and I have not figured out what is going on. There is obviously something different about the way Unity's OpenGL renderer works compared to the DirectX renderer, but I haven't figured out specfically what the difference is in this case.
