The Ultimate Jool 5 Challenge - 1.0 to 1.3

Recommended Posts

My god...just been reading through this thread and now im starting to doubt my capabilities. However, im still going to give it a try as for me this would be a massive achievement.

Its actually quite worrying just thinking about the mission...

That appears to be without landers attached. You can't drain fuel from the landrs, so they equal a net loss of delta-v. I, being a VEEERRRRYYY cautious person, would sugest around 8km/s of delta-v with landers attached. It's doable :)

Do you need to launch at a certain time. Does it take some fancy orbits to do?

Well, you should launch at or around a transfer window to Jool. You can always timwarp to the next one...

And as for fancy orbits, they're not necessary, unless you are on a tight fuel budget, in which case many gravity assists would probably be used, I myself don;t know how though.

Okay, I'm going to replace the Mk1 tanks with Mk3 tanks.

This thing's useful, although I've forgotten how to use it since the last time I used it: https://alexmoon.github.io/ksp/

Hi all :)

Mission successful !

The 4 Albums are on the Mission Report here:

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/130960-isru-rhino-ssto-explorer-mk1-jool-5-mission/

Fly safe with Valentina :)

Congratulations @astrobond, you have completed the Jool 5 Challenge on the ISRU Level!  You have one of the most compact all-in-one ships I've seen, I'm impressed by the efficiency both in engineering and in cost!

@Findthepin1 leaving debris is allowed.

@Racescort666 your mission is looking great so far.  Good luck in the Jool system!

@Mad Rocket Scientist watch the clipping on the crew pods, otherwise your mothership looks like a good start and is very lightweight.  That's good for efficiency but also means your landers will have a big effect on your delta V (especially that 24 ton Tylo lander).

@sdj64

Thank's a lot for the review of my mission, and for keeping alive this excellent challenge ! :)

I'm planning on only putting one kerbal in each of those two-pod pods, would that be a problem?

Finally got around to starting this challenge, been meaning to for a while.  My idea here is to land the same command pod on each planet using a fun little claw tug to move stuff around and various bodies for each planet/moon.  Planning to try to stretch this into a "Landing the same ship everywhere" Grand Tour, but we'll see about that.  Tylo and Laythe landings are finished for now, just have to mop up the easy ones next.  Because it's just Val, I expect this will only qualify for the "Easy mode", but having a blast with my outer space Lego-stye mothership.

Hi all. I accept the challenge and plan to fly it soon and post video. I have had one failed attempt already, and I am just saying this to warn everyone... If you are planning on aerobraking, test out your ship's balance at Kerbin first! My vehicle was not balanced properly and flipped into a tumble whilst aerobraking that no amount of f9 could rectify.

I've had a similar problem at Jool, and found it wasn't worth the effort. For a few dV, it's not hard to get captured from a decent transfer. I found the heat shield weight, balance concerns, etc were extra mass that could better be turned it extra LF.  This time I was lucky and caught a free gravicapture from a Laythe intercept (shows it in one of my album pics), 0 dv used, then a gentle nudge to get a Tylo intercept.

Part 2 completed. Val has successfully landed on the remaining 3 moons of Jool, then for no apparent reason headed for Eeloo instead of home. More bizzare reconfigurations of the Cosmic Lego.  Seriously, wait until you see what it becomes at Duna.  Val and her trusty command pod are going all the way!

Part 3 finished.  Val has left Eeloo behind, and stopped for a quick investigation of Dres.  The lego ship switches around, ditching the fuel section, the reconfiguring again for a lopsided aerobrake into Duna, followed by a landing with parachutes in another configuration.  Then a quick hop to Ike, and a jaunt over to Gilly to wait for the Eve lander and Moho diver to catch up. Just Eve, Moho, and back to Kerbin.  if she survives, the same command pod will have made its own little Grand Tour.  We'll see how it goes.

Yikes!  Just read the rules more carefully, and realized that the way I'm running this mission would disqualify me, as I am not returning directly from Jool, but meeting another ship before I run Eve and Moho.  So I forked the savegame, and instead of continuing on, here's what Val does if she's trying to just complete the Jool 5 following the rules.  Instead of going to Eeloo and on to the rest of the planets, she just does a simple return to Kerbin, landing safely behind her giant heat shield and leaving the mothership in orbit for another day.  This concludes my Jool 5 entry for easy level, but the adventures will continue over in the Ultimate Challenge thread.

Also, mission info:

- Which game versions did you use? 1.05
- What mods did you use, if any? only KER for information
- How many Kerbals are on the mission? Just Val
- How many launches was needed to start your mission from Kerbin? One
- How much did your mission cost? 774,913
- Did you needed a refueling mission? No
- Did you bring additional stuff like satellites, rovers, etc? No extra ships, just a variety of bodies to land a single command pod
- Share the delta-V information too, if you tracked it! Impossible to track, as the ship reconfigured completely 6 times.  Something like 20K total, mostly not used for the Jool 5 part but going on to the rest of the planets
- Any additional note or description? It was a blast playing with this ship, I never intended to do more than Jool 5 when I was building it, but I was able to do a ton of moving stuff around and tailor it in flight like Legos for a variety of uses.  Particularly happy with the Duna aerobrake later in the flight.  The versatality of the Klaw tug I included at the last minute really allowed me to do a lot with this ship.  Also I should have added an RTG, solar power was very borderline, and I wasted a bit of fuel to do brightside manouvers.  I didn't test anything before launch, and I didn't pick great windows for the most part, this while mission was very seat of the pants - felt very Kerbal :)

Taranis mission now has it's own thread: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/131750-jool-5-challange-trials-and-tribulations-taranis/

@sdj64, I will update that thread with my status until it's all done then I'll post to this thread once it's all finished again. Thanks for the go-ahead, this has been a fun challenge so far.

Good luck is all i can say.:)

How on earth did you get 8km/s dV out of THAT?! When I build something of a similar size and fuel-capacity, I was lucky to get 3km/s dV! My current attempt at Jool-5 is a MONSTER, so any way of trimming the mass would be appreciated....

Hi :)

The best way to lower the total mass is to lower as much as possible the landers !

The less payload you have on your mothership, the more Dv you have with less fuel, less engines, etc :)
