I posted a comment in a thread today about people adding/building weapons into KSP and it got a lot of responses both for and against it so rather than continuing to hijack that poor guys thread, I thought I'd start another one with a poll.

It feels wrong to me but that is my personal opinion and I'm not judging those that do it and I have no right to tell anyone how to play KSP.

How do you feel about implements of war in KSP?

Edit- wanted to clarify, the poll is not whether or not it should be allowed, it's a sandbox game with a great modding community that encourages creativity, so obviously it's up to the player to decide that. Squad has also made it pretty clear that they will not add them to the stock game. I just want to know what you personally think of adding them to your games. This could be really important with multi-player on the way.

I don't see a poll. My opinion: KSP is a sandbox game. The devs have made it clear that they won't add weapons in stock, because the focus of the game is on exploration. But it's a sandbox game set in space. Sci-fi space battles are cool, so people are naturally going to have them. I have no problem with it.

Sorry can't find your poll but it's a good question. Obviously based on opinion but I've found militarization can be quite fun, even if it does make me feel guilty enlisting unsuspecting kerbals. Even playing in stock it necessitates all sorts of fun logistical aspects. Ammo resupply ships, crew transport, rescue and recovery and of course armoring your craft. Frankly though, I'm back to pure exploration/science collection since the changes in 1.0 have made me reconsider design aspects. I may militarize again, but for now I'm content with the new challenges with heat and aero.

First off, let me say thank you. It's not often on the internet that I see 'I couldn't care less', and it drives me bonkers :P

Second, it's not really for me. I'm sure I'll tinker with it at some point, and I may even end up loving it, but right now I'm good. If someone else wants to, great.

If other's are too bored with the game or unable to compete with its challenges and start to shoot at things ... so be it. I don't get any satisfaction out of that either. In fact, i would be astonished if ksp would serve as a base of a wargame and will change orbit as soon as i see a suspicious spacecraft closing in.

I mean ... try to fight while in kerbolar orbit ... an exchange of fire may last years ... how thrilling ...

:-)

I've never really gone full warfare in KSP, but I've had a lot of fun building things with arms (I mean that in both senses of the word).

F.R.A.N.K was probably my best armed creation and I took the combat thing further than I've done before with that

I did also go through a phase (ages ago, 0.16 days) of building melee attack craft and for a while the Reaver was my signature craft

It could rip other craft to bits and capture their command pods, but that sort of design doesn't really work so well anymore.

I've also really enjoyed building stock bombers because hitting a target with an unguided "bomb" is a fun challenge and really satisfying when you pull it off.

But I tend to keep my more violent creations to separate sandbox saves, and the primary goal of KSP for me is peaceful exploration.

I voted "meh."

Blowing stuff up is all well and good (must try out BDArmory one of these days, it looks like a lot of fun) but I wish I could have humans to do it with instead of Kerbals. I'm used to humans blowing each other up in video games (although it does sometimes bother me if it's not handled in an appropriately grown-up fashion, which is why I haven't bought GTA V yet), but somehow seeing anything "adult" mixed in with the childish, cartoony little Kerbals just doesn't quite feel right. I don't know, maybe I'd feel better if I just retextured them to have pink/brown skin instead of green.

I'd actually like to see a "human Kerbal" mod for other, less explodey reasons too (RSS reasons, to be precise), and I've given some thought to how it could be accomplished beyond simple retextures, but that's a topic for another time.

Just to be clear, I would never INTENTIONALLY target a manned ship/station/craft...Unmanned is fair game though.

You can't play in my sandbox. . . . . . game. lol.

There is no reason for it in singleplayer but it would be great in MP. Just playing with BD Armory and flying in F22 lookalike while dodging bullets from ground sentries is a lot of fun.

I think there should be a penalty for firing weapons, like your space becomes congested with dangerous shrapnel that blows up your stations and lands on KSP destroying building in the space center.

Reality there is no warfare in space, its like a doomsday behavior, you attack others and the collateral damage takes your stuff out.

I don't have a problem with people crossing military with KSP if they feel like it. There's been a lot of crossover in the real world; almost all of the early space launchers were built from military hardware, the early astronauts were military pilots, and even today the pilots are usually active duty military. The difference between a missile and a space launcher is what's programmed into the guidance system.

Sometimes I want to go to space, sometimes I want to blow stuff up.

KSP is capable of delivering on both quite well.

While I wouldn't want to see Squad adding in weapon systems I see no reason to discourage mods/repurpoused stock parts, specially not in a single player game.

I'm not really excited for there to be weapons in the stock game, particularly given the fact that there's nothing much to shoot besides yourself. That said, I've installed BDA and I play with it all the time, because explosions are fun, but I also never really find a use for the weapons on serious long-distance missions. Weapons are best left to mods, if you ask me, but that doesn't mean mods can't do them very well, as BDA testifies.

I build lots of planes, and dropping cluster bombs on the KSC is good for the occasional chuckle. I'd love to do some kind of a 6v6 BDArmory battle in MP when thats a thing. Would need Kerbinside or something similar to let the second team launch off the island runway. Honestly its a small side gig for the occasional destructive urge, but for the most part I stick to shooting rockets off towards planets and hoping I dont go splat.

People can do what ever they want. Its not something this game should ever have stock, but people want to play the game they want to play.

I personally always have a little fun making mock "military" units with intentions of defending KSC against a kraken invasion, but I never went so far as to download mods dealing with actual weapons haha.

That reminds me of that "Armageddon" movie with that Gatling gun on the asteroid rover. Well, I'd say, everybody as he/she likes, but for me the exploration of space needs to be peaceful! Unless some badass aliens come around wishing to cause trouble...

Truthfully, I'm kinda sad that folks would want to take a determinedly non-military game - and then militarize it anyway. But at the end of the day it's their game and killing stuff has been a staple part of computer gaming since whenever, whether you're killing ghosts, mushrooms, ghouls n' ghosts or .... zombies.

Edit: Sigh, that should of course read, extreme right wing, national socialist type zombies.

It should definitely stay limited to mods, for those of us who want to mess around with it. BD Armory and its associated mods are a ton of fun and allow me to create scenarios and try things I simply couldn't elsewhere, so I find that to be fun and entertaining. Obviously it's not for everyone and should stay like that though.
