Devnote Tuesday: A big announcement

SQUAD

Recommended Posts

Can we get the official comments by the devs posted here and on reddit put in the main devnote so people dont have to hunt them all down?

Anyways, Im in the 'dont give a crap' camp. But there is a lot of crap on here from people.

1. Is this really a devnote? Not really but apparently they didnt have anything much else to say. Still working, read last weeks and it would probably be close. Though I will say that some actual comments from someone would have been nice, even if it was a link to the reddit articles or something.

2. Do we want a PS4 version? Mostly no it would seem but thats us. Others might. Harv wanted it on many platforms for a while but was limited. When one of those limitations was removed he went for it. (Coulda been why there was a rush to release.)

3. Will this harm the PC version? Nope. Devs said it wouldnt and it apparently helped with the move to U5 so its a gain for the PC crowd.

4. "But the PS4 version will be made by people we dont like." Who cares? Its the PS4 version. If they do good or bad it really doesnt matter to us so why fret?

5. SQUAD isnt a charity. They are a company who likes to make money. Suck it up. They had a chance to expand the kerbal license to another platform and get other people to do the work. If someone comes with an offer like "We like your product, can we sell it in our platform and get other people to do the work? We will give you a cut of the sales." Why wouldnt they accept it?

Just calm down people, sure, be annoyed that the devnotes were a single picture. No matter what it was Id be annoyed. But PC Kerbal isnt going to stop, PS4 wont effect you unless its something you want. In that case this is good news.

"Right now 1.0.3 and 1.1 are being made separately, essentially. 1.1 can be expected in weeks to months, 1.0.3 in days to weeks."

Well, that cleared that up - NOT.

It's time for a rant..... If your a fan-boy beware.

Christ, I'm fed up with KSP and I'm not the only one: I know four other friends - two of whom introduced me to the game & two I introduced to it - who were hard-core KSP addicts (I've been at it since 18.5). But, as they started delving more into 1.02, one-by-one they all lost interest, fed up with the bugs (my spaceplanes just hit the KSC in orbit and gone kaboom!), dodgy physics (how can one strut produce more drag than 4 wings?!?!!) and the stupid part balancing issues (frying nukes, anyone?).

Now I've stopped playing, too, waiting (probably in vain) for 1.03 to fix the issues and make KSP worth playing again.

Seriously, I think Squad has lost the plot: judging by some of the half-baked decisions they've made over the last year, they can't even manage the development of the PC version properly, so how the hell are they going to manage the PS4 port as well, especially as Flying Tiger are just a bunch of pound-shop developers, by the looks of it?

Moreover, as the game is built around mods, Squad can't fall back on them, in the ported, version, to plug over the gaps in KSPs functionality.

In fact, mods aside, I can't think of a game LESS suited to a games console because of its sheer complexity; (this situation reminds me of what happened to IL2 when it got ported: the ported-version became a dumbed-down, thumb-aching borefest, while the PC version became so buggy, it got blasted by the reviewers, failed to sell, and the franchise died in the process).

What is going on with this decision? Is this a joke? Are Squad so arrogant to think the existing player-base doesn't matter anymore? I've always felt these guy's were making it up as they went along and now it looks to me like, Squad are either in-over-their-heads and trying to sell-off the game before its development stalls completely through poor project-management - or their plan, all along, was to not to finish the game, but to bash-it-out and make a quick buck by selling the project off, half-done to one of the big-boyz to finish (or ruin).

Unfortunately for them, it's taken the FOUR YEARS to get it to that state and I don't see Squad making a bundle anytime soon: it'll cost them a-plenty to get "Flying-Tiger" to come up with something workable for the PS4 (which is a bit of a flop anyway) and even longer before all that investment turns into profit, so all this stuff about money being ploughed back into better development is wishful thinking, in my view.

The devs said it wouldn't affect PC version ? Oh great, surely that means everything will be alright then. It's not as if every single developer who ported a pc game to console said that, and every time it harmed the PC anyway. But well, this is squad so *surely* that won't happen !

Jokes apart there's no way Flying Tiger can port only by themselvesa game they don't know : some squad devs will have to work with them. And then, once the port is complete, who will run it, update it and fix it ? Either Flying Tiger stays in the works with squad (i doubt it though) or squad divides its resources between PC and PS4 development to run both platforms.

The didnt do it themselves, they worked with squad already and made the U5 upgrade easier at the same time. Im guessing it will be handled much in the same way as KerbalEDU only more hands off from squad because its PS4. They already stated they wont separate their development focus. Of course I cant tell the future and how things will work out but I dont see the need for pessimistic fear mongering based on things other people do.

Epic fail!

One needs to learn how to walk before trying to run. And KSP is not very stable on its feet. (Pun intended.) Win/Mac/Linux versions are nearly identical. Making those three side by side makes sense. But at least get those working without flaws before porting KSP to a completely different platform.

Sorry to say it but decisions like this start to make me loose faith in SQUAD.

Ohohohoho i won't be so sure.

As much as the FAQ claims it has speeded up the process and we have be always at war with Eurasia, i find it pretty clear the real decision to force the U5 upgrade into 1.0.3 (which was original supose to be bug and memory leaks fixing) and the delays on it is because of this in the first place.

No. Unity 5 was ALWAYS on the cards - they've been talking about it since Unity started pre-announcing Unity 5. Players have been demanding it since Unity started pre-announcing it! Unity 5 was always expected to make KSP better - better performance, better UI, better graphics. Also, Unity 5 is expected to fix the 64-bit problems under Windows, which has been a bugbear for a long time, especially for those with mod-heavy games.

With all those advantages, there was no way Squad were going to waste that opportunity, regardless of whether another company helped them or not. This deal hasn't changed whether we would get the Unity 5 upgrade, all it has changed is how long we have to wait.

Epic fail!

Squad are not writing the PS port. Another company, Flying Tiger Entertainment, is doing that, leaving Squad free to work on bug-fixing and the changeover to Unity 5. (Also, FTE are providing a lot of assistance to Squad with the Unity 5 work, which is helping things move on a lot faster.)

This is only for the good. We get the Unity 5 upgrade sooner, which means better performance, better graphics and a working 64-bit build under Windows. And Squad gets extra sales which will help them develop updates to KSP 1.x AND fattens them up for the long, hard grind to KSP 2.x, whenever that comes and whatever that turns out to be.

Glad I'm not the only one who suspected this would happen. It's plausible if the move went smoother than anticipated and explains the length of experimentals, but it would also mean a hell of a lot more bugs.

I give it a 50/50 chance

Hey everyone, I understand that this news is looked at a bit critically in a community that mainly consists of PC players, but I think we (as a community) are losing ourselves a bit here. KSP is coming to PS4, and that in my honest opinion is great news: it means more people get to enjoy Kerbal Space Program and discover how to rocket science. There are many great things to come to KSP both in the near future and further down the line, and it's sad to see people speculate or even state for fact otherwise when they have absolutely nothing to base this on; the same goes for the alleged "dumbing down" of the game. As Max said, partnering up with another studio even provides certain advantages for the PC version, such as the quick port to Unity 5.

Generalisations such as "console plebs" and "PC master race" really have no place in a level headed discussion. Any group of people is extremely diverse and setting a whole group aside as inferior is just silly and quite honestly degrading. They will not be condoned from here on out.

And finally, please be more respectful towards Squad. Constructive criticism, questions and even some scepticism are all fine, but in the end you're a guest on our forums and we do expect you to behave as guests.

Well said, This was getting out of hand pretty fast.

GL to you and the team! I hope to see ports over to XB1 in the future as well!

KasperVld:

That is great news and the rest is all good and just common sence (sadly lacking on much of the web), but just a tip: Please do not stray away from the regular Dev news next time, forum hero's love to eat that ;-)

Hmm.... hm hmmmm....

Haven't tried building to PS4 in unity5 but from the looks it will end up being...

-change input controls

-maybe make a flower ui thingy for action groups on console

-click build, select ps4, click start, then connect your pc to the ps4, run KSP

- maybe one button selects for groups of tweakable items (solar panels, bats, science etc.) then a set of cycle buttons to manage them all (this is good for PC too for faster fiddling)

Conclusion :

-Squad decided not to waste time doing easy but fiddly control stuff so they hired flying tiger (which from the sounds maybe not the greatest choice)

-They felt that because we basically know what 1.0.3 is already (mem leak, more aero/heating optimisation) that there was nothing more to say... (still lacking devnotes even if it was a "note") (ninja confirmed)

-Squad will continue to primarily develop for pc

-only foreseeable negative will be dumbing down of features to fit them on PS4, mnroe likely ps4 will just have disabled features

-people are pronouncing doom like its 2011 waiting for 2012 (this is opinion, ignore it, I dont want more flames)

Speculation:

- if they're delaying ps4 release till 2016, we must have some HUGE IMPORTANT features coming out before then to warrant it (this is hope for the doom pronouncers, take it or leave it)

edit: Kasper confirm ninja notes
