Accident Review Board Hearing

However, while I did see the extra parameters (RMB) while right-clicking the chutes in the VAB, I could not see any means by which to edit them. Does this require a mod to change their deployment factors?

I was under the impression they are just sliders (or "clickable") like fuel amounts. Just click somewhere on the bar with the predeployment pressure to change it, and the number will reflect the change.

I fixed the responsibility on the design workforce of which come up with some sort of hobby in addition to trip strategy of which remaining bedroom pertaining to such a eventuality. Leaving behind some sort of free-falling, crewed pod unsupervised had been an undesirable strategy from the start, not to mention 5 of them. The planning workforce had been getting difficulty IMHO.

Accident? As if the review board would buy that. This was CLEARLY a test of some new Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicle design for the delivery of some horrible cargo to several targets simultaneously, but accounting said the R&D guys only had funding for one launch and this tourist contract had to be completed for the KSP to stay in the black. Don't think we'll let your negligence or your irresponsible decision to try and do both at once pass without...

...oh hey, you brought cake?

LOL Ok, that's the best response yet- and I can't believe I didn't think of it myself. MIRK. :)

I will hope my future enterprises are rather less embarrassing. Though, analyzing a Kerbal tragedy is a lively intellectual endeavor.

- P.S. & you *know*, I Did get a full Fund award for successfully delivering them to space, so the clandestine weapons test theory actually would have paid off in bean-counter land!

It was a rookie mistake on my part, not realizing that re-entry heating could occur so low in the atmosphere.

It all depends how fast you are going. I have had it occur right down to the ground! Send a massive rocket straight up really really far, then straight back down, and it will have so much speed it will still be experiencing re-entry on impact.

Oh! I get it, when the part is in the assembly area. Thank you! -didn't think of that, I was just in the panel side.

For 'chutes you can vary both parameters mid-flight as well. In general, if it is had a green bar or button you can change it. (Hint: after you unlock tier 2 R&D you can transfer fuel around your craft mid-flight in a similar way.)

Don't think we'll let your negligence or your irresponsible decision to try and do both at once pass without...

...oh hey, you brought cake?

Wow, that's interesting Zild. I had no idea that the physics operated that way. I see I'll be learning much about the physics of spaceflight as I get into this! Including perhaps why my first space-probe to Mun ran out of electricity after less than a day of operation, despite having 11 batteries.

I once head it with a recoverable tank that was both heavy (like, 40t) and areodynamically shaped. It looked like an artillery shell and was doing 600m/s@5km. Interesting enough, a single radial drogue was all it took. But capsules have a lot less weight behind a blunt surface... I'm quite surprise that it's even to be too fast.

  • 2 weeks later...

As a final epilogue to my attempts at bringing home MIRKs from orbit, I recently tried a 3-pod maneuver on a Minmus return. All the chutes wree set to deploy at .3 air-pressue, and to bloom at 500m. Two of the pods were trapped behind the burning up lander and so didn't separate away until about 6km, but Bob in the Science capsule slid free and was 17km down range on landing. Valentina & the tourist landed together and were fine, but Bob's capsule down range seemed to explode on impact. Bob is listed as Lost. The region is too remote for me to send a crew to, and no capsule shows in the CC. I received no "failure reports" during re-entry, so I almost conclude that the craft failed due to being so far from the pod I was commanding. Can this be true?

Unless anyone has any thoughts, the loss of Bob Kerman will put an end to multiple pod re-entries. A new 4-man pod is in development.

Good morning. I had my first fatalities last night, and am trying to assess where the fault lies (someone has to be cashiered, right?) . . .

I always attribute it to Pilot error, then realize that I was the pilot.

A chute being deployed too early is the reason my Jeb perished. :(

I was too blame, so I cashiered myself, then immediately rehired myself at half the old pay rate. Half of zero is still zero.

I got Valentina to plant a flag in his memory on the Mun... and the new Mun Base is named after him. What else can I do? I feel guilty, do they expect me to go to prison for a few years?

:(

Recently had my own failure, not so bad as yours, one dead but the other 4 (and more importantly Jeb and Valentina) survived.

Realized I had screwed up on the construction of my mother ship, rather than disassemble it in space and then reassemble it I decided to just deorbit the ship and start over.

We decided the blame was on a defective solar array. How was it defective? It somehow survived re-entry as well as the ship snapping in half causing the poor kerbal bailing out to slam into it :D

I had my tourist land their craft on they own once, due to design/pilot fault. The reentry capsule stack got broken in two due to stress and lack of struts. Luckily both parts had their chutes activated and they deployed properly. Despite no fatalities have occurred, the "fly real spaceship by yourself" option have been withdrawn from offer for untrained civilian tourists for safety reasons.

It's been my experience that chutes will not deploy in a vehicle you are not controlling. Even if you pre-deploy them, they will never fully deploy and will crash into the ground.

So, if I understand your scenario correctly, I suspect that is the problem. Although I haven't actually tried it recently, I think the last time was in .90. I had boosters that had chutes attached, and when I staged them, they simultaneously jettisoned and deployed their chutes. The system didn't work, though. Although they clearly pre-deployed, if they were not controlled by me, they never fully deployed.

I lost my first 1.0+ kerbal last night. Standard reentry, 2 kerbals coming down from 2 rescue contracts. The view looked nice....

I clicked EVA instead of IVA...

I am so sorry Gillitina, so...so sorry....

Did you happen to record the names of these so called "tourists" ? More likely you have just been hit by a top level espionage team from a rival space company

THEY are known to use this as a means of crippling your fledgling operations into the "paying tourist" industry

methinks you may have a covert operative feeding this rival company information

you may need to sterilize (read that as vaporize) your entire staff and hire new staff after carefully cross checking

I think there is an opportunity to create a specific subforum for accident reviews - that could be interesting - a specialised area where we can all go for a sort of formal review of accidents.

Just a crazy thought. It might never happen.

My first real accident came with my initial launch and recovery of a MK1-2 pod. it was .25 and I hit the water under time acceleration. Condolences were sent to Mrs. Kerman, Mrs. Kerman and Mrs. Kerman. The ARB shrugged and then went out for a coffee.

I think that's an excellent and fun idea! Having had to put off moving to v1.0 until Icould replace my PC, I've only just trasnitioned from v0.9 straight to v1.04. So I did a few test flights in sandbox mode. Jeb died during a high suborbital hop because I forgot that heat shields have to be added these days, they are'nt integral to the command pods. Bill died because the chutes either burned or ripped off from being deployed too early. Bob is undergoing back surgery from a very hard landing because - well, I actually don't know quite what I did wrong on that one, but I thought he was going to die more than once, there was tumbling, stages not separating when they were supposed to, and one of two parachutes going AWOL. Val''s ship also tumbled like crazy (I need to get my head around what's needed to stop that sort of thing on teh wya up) but staged well, had a heatshield, and the parachutes worked fine, so she landed at about 5.5m/s

I blame the design team. Buncha useless wossnames.. :-}

I've got a lot to relearn - and me with over 300 hours playing time! :-}

& I sec- err, 3rd that motion! Though, and accident review could easily just be started on an "as needed" basis by the user, I think a sub-forum might be a fun idea.

One thing that *I* always thought needed investigating was Scott Manley's Interstellar Quest loss of Sean Kerman. So, we are to understand, that the person who always ends his posts with "Fly Safe!", thought it was a Good Idea to have a Kerbal ride a Flying bicycle through Duna re-entry????... If Anything screams INQUEST, *This* does. :)

I can just see an ambitious You Tuber start a new series where we write in and tell him/ her about the "event". He/ she then recreates the event and has the Kerbal review board meet to deal with the event. Oh, the drama.
