Subassembly Only Attaching From Docking Port

I mad a lander with a sub assembly, and it has to face upwards, with the docking port to the sky and a detacher below the rocket. I made it a sub assembly and when I load it in, it will only attach from the docking port, not the detacher at the bottom. How do I fix this?

Make the detacher at the bottom the root part.

actually, nope. Make the root part attach to the detacher.

"New", place an arbitrary bogus part, load the subassembly, attach it to that part (by the port).

Attach two other bogus parts to the detacher (one to the detacher, the other to the first of the two parts.)

Select "Root", click the two bogus parts. Select "Edit" again, and delete the first bogus part (attached to the docking port).

Detach the whole lander from the two bogus parts and save as subassembly.
