Where there's smoke...

...there's fire.

We've got a forest fire about 10 miles from my house, 100 acres worth burning at last report, and of course the wind is blowing the smoke right in our direction. The air here is pretty thick with wood smoke, burns the eyes, and it's a bit harsh on the throat too. Unfortunately the fire is ravaging one of my favorite places to ride (mountain bike), a state forest. :(

Let me guess, you're a Californian too!

My immediate thought was Washington (where a few weeks ago you could be 100 miles away from the fires and the smoke was still so thick you couldn't see the Sun)... But no, his profile says he's in Jersey (not the old one).

Correct, New Jersey. I like the smell of a campfire too, but this was a bit overwhelming and there was no escaping it (except to stay indoors and keep the central air on). As of early this morning, they claim it's only 50% contained. Depending on my schedule today, I might take a ride out and take a look.

Somehow every year i hear about extreme, "exceptional" forest fires in the USA...

That's just the media hyping everything - ignore it. We've had forest fires here in NJ every year for as long as I've been alive and then some. There were forest fires before man was here (Indians included). It's normal, natural. It's actually beneficial, especially to Pine forests... here in NJ or anywhere. Same with floods, hurricanes, snow storms, etc... it's called "weather".

Oh wow I'm in New Jersey too I hadn't heard about this. I'll probably see it on the news soon enough. Yea it's really dry. Hasn't rained in months and there's no rain in sight for even more months.

Strange enough we saw a median today with grass plants on fire driving down route 73 going towards Berlin. Can't wait for rain. CANT WAIT FOR FALL. Screw summer it's the worst season ever. Especially if you work outside like we do. Just a completely terrible season.

Yeah, and then you have the people that think it's the grandest thing ever while laying out in the sun getting skin cancer and then staying in air conditioning 90% of the time. I like the fall better, something cozy about it. Summer's just one big, boring oven.
