Advanced Grabbing Unit (AGU) Issue

Recommended Posts

I'm running version: v1.0.4.861 on Windows 7 64bit, using Steam

I had a lander that was stranded in orbit around Mun, another craft with an AGU docked with it, to bring it back to my Orbital Station. Upon arrival at the station, when I attempt to release the AGU so the lander can dock at the station, the craft with the AGU releases from the craft, and the lander has focus. However the AGU snaps off the other craft and starts floating away at a faster than normal rate. The AGU also still responds to controls even though it is not in focus.

Other issues follow, which can be better explained by watching the below video.

This is a screenshot of the 2 docked craft.

I have the out_put.log, the original craft files (pre-launch), and the affected save file, but since they're fairly large I didn't paste them here.

Here's my system specs:

There are numerous known bugs with the AGU. Hopefully they will be fixed in due course but in the meantime you should seriously consider installing (at least the relevant part of) Claw's Stock bugfix mod as this works around several of the issues and makes the AGU much less likely to cause weird things...

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately after installing this mod, the issue still exists. Will this mod only affect newly created craft?

If you can, please upload the save.

This bug happening when trying to disconnect is an unusual one. I don't see it reported too often, so if you have a repeatable one then that would be very helpful.

One bug in my fixes has to do with docking, and the other with fixing the joint. So undocking it is a new one. I have some ideas, but having your save would help out.

Also, I assume you aren't running any other mods?

Welcome to the forums! :D

Cheers,

-Claw

This bug happening when trying to disconnect is an unusual one. I don't see it reported too often, so if you have a repeatable one then that would be very helpful.

Here's the save file and the log file after recreating the issue.

Steps to recreate after loading the save file:

  1. From the tracking station select "Mun Lander Alpha" and then click "Fly".
  2. Right click on the AGU (only one on the craft) and select "Release".

In terms of recreating the issue from scratch, I'll have to work on that and get back to you.

Also, I assume you aren't running any other mods?

Prior to installing the ModuleManager and StockBugFixModules, I was not using, and never have used, any mods for KSP.

Welcome to the forums! :D

Thanks! I'm looking forward to being a member of this great community! :)

I did a bit more testing, trying to recreate the issue with a brand new craft of similar design. It appears that the issue occurs on unmanned craft that have a AGU and an FL-A5 Adapter. Also the FL-A5 adapter must be set as the root. As I was attempting to recreate the issue making my new craft more and more like the old craft with the issue, it was only after I made the FL-A5 adapter the root (from the VAB), that the issue began to occur.

I also tried swapping some of the parts around (including the adapter) on the same craft, but leaving FL-A5 adapter as root, and the issue still occurred. In both cases I was docked to the final stage of a fairly simple manned craft. It's important that the craft that doesn't have the AGU, has focus after the release. I don't understand how that logic works exactly, but it seems like it gives manned craft precedence. So docking to a manned craft will do the trick.

Also, here's a much smaller save file than what I provided in the previous post. The issue can be recreated by selecting the only craft in the tracking station, selecting fly, and then releasing the AGU.

Steps to recreate the issue from scratch:

  1. Launch any manned craft and get it into orbit. I used this, trying to keep it as simple as possible: Test Orbiter
  2. Launch a craft that meets the criteria described in the first paragraph of this post. Here are the 2 I used: Test AGU Orbiter and Test AGU Orbiter 2
  3. Dock the craft from step 2 to the craft from step 1 using the AGU
  4. Go to the space center (this is required)
  5. Click tracking station
  6. Select the craft you just docked
  7. Release the AGU

Does making any other non-controllable part the root also cause this ChewieRolo?

On my new craft I made during testing before I changed the root to the FL-A5 adapter, root happened to be the FL-T800 Fuel Tank, which had no issue. What do you consider a non-controllable part? Anything that doesn't have a right-click menu? If so, I don't believe I've tried anything else but the FL-A5 adapter. I'll see if I can test a few at some point tonight.

Were you guys able to recreate the issue with the saves I've provided, or by following the steps I gave? I'm just wondering if this is a universal bug, or if it's just me.

Anything that isn't a pod or cockpit, I just can't get my head around that adapter causing any issues, it's pretty basic as parts go.

I'll try your steps and let you know what happens.

You guys are probably tired of hearing from me about this at this point, but I think I've got it.:)

There is a property for parts called "PhysicsSignificance" that can be found in the .cfg file for some parts. If it's set to 1 the part is considered Physicsless - described here.

The wiki page actually states that "When constructing a craft, the root part can't be such a part." However the game still allows for some of these parts to be the root. FL-A5 Adapter being one of them.

BZ-52 Radial Attachment Point is another Physicsless part that can be set to the root, and I recreated my steps using that part as root and the issue occurred again. What actually happens is the root part detaches from the rest of the craft, and the rest of the craft accelerates away. I'm confident that the issue will occur when any part with PhysicsSignificance = 1 is root, and you follow the steps I provided.

Now I can stop obsessing about this and get back to playing the game :P

I hope this was helpful.

Certainly not, any relevant sounding information about a problem is very useful.

Yes, the wiki isn't correct about that. The thing that decides if a part can be root is what can be attached to it, you must be able to both stack and surface attach to the part.

As for the bug itself, this sounds related to the code that reorganises the vessel tree to have a different part as root when vessels dock and undock (including the claw). When the AGU vessel originally grabbed the lander one of the vessels (which one depends on some fairly complex rules involving the vessel types, the size and the order in the save file) gets re-rooted to make the connecting part the root and then this new root part (and the rest of the vessel) gets merged with the other vessel and attached at the relevant part. The reorganised vessel remembers which part was root before. When you release the claw the subtree is turned into a new vessel and is re-rooted to have the original part back as root.

Looking at the log provided shows this:

NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
at PartJoint.SetupJoint (Vector3 jointPos, Vector3 jointOrt, Vector3 jointOrt2, Int32 size) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0

at UIPartActionButton.OnClick () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0

This shows an exception is happening while the root is being set back to the original part when you release the claw. The exact reason isn't clear from this message but the fact that it only happens with a physicsless part should allow it to be worked out. It may be a problem just with the releasing or it may be that the vessel was corrupted when the two vessels were originally joined. Do you happen to have a save file from before you grabbed the lander with the claw? If so, can you either upload it or try grabbing it again and uploading the output_log again?

I've got a few rovers for testing strange claw things (it's much easier to test this stuff with rovers just off the runway) so I'll modify one to have a physicsless root and run a few tests...

Do you happen to have a save file from before you grabbed the lander with the claw?

Here you go. And good call testing it with landed craft. It looks like it affects them as well. That save has both orbiting and landed craft, with physicsless parts as root, ready to dock.

I also found that this bug doesn't only affect the AGU, but it can be recreated when undocking with normal docking ports as well. Here's a save with 2 craft with the Clamp-O-Tron Docking Port Jr. ready for docking to show that the bug affects more than just the AGU.

Steps to recreate:

  1. From the tracking station select a craft that can dock (For PreDock save: "Test AGU" or "Test Rover" | For PreDock2 save: "Test Dock Jr Orbiter" has RCS, but both craft have docking ports.)
  2. Dock the craft to the other nearby craft.
  3. Go to Space Station
  4. Re-select the same craft you just docked
  5. Release/Undock the AGU/Docking Port

Experience the same bug as @ChewieRolo but not with AGU, with small docking port. Thanks to @ChewieRolo, I know that thing happens with undocking in general.

In my case ships looked like separated, but still attached to each other by invisible string and considered one ship. FL-A5 Adapter with docking port attached to it was catapulted outward - looked very much like gravity was not affecting it.

I'm playing Steam 1.05 so all available fixes should present and bug still happens.

Not found any output_log.txt (I'm on Linux), but KSP.log have some warnings regarding that flight.

@Alquanole, I think I know what's happening, but I'm not certain.

When you claw another craft it stops exiting as a separate vessel so it's no longer moving, it's just a point in space where a craft was.

Of course this point is falling behind you so as far as the target speed is concerned the ship is moving away from you at speed.

Checking the new combined vessels speed, apoapsis and periapsis shows no unwanted effect, so it's not suddenly accelerating.

Ideally KSP should automatically deselect the target, but this does not happen.

@sal_vager if you read my last post in this thread i came to a similar conclusion although i have to say that I experienced weird results when uncoupling the AGU while landed in water.

When I have time I'll experiment a little more and keep you posted on my findings (building a space station around a salvaged lab module... You know, career mode...).

Anyways, thank you for your prompt reaction. It is really appreciated (I have been alfa and beta testing other games and I know that communication can sometimes be unpleasantly lagging).
