What Stock Ships Would You Want In KSP?

Hey! So today i had some fun making rockets that would fit perfectly with the Stock Game! Meaning, a spacecraft that could be added to the main game as a stock craft. So i was wondering... What would the community build? Well, i guess we'll find out!

My first build: Viking 1 (Couldn't come up with a 'Kerbal Version' for the name)

Obviously, its a model of the Viking 1, made by NASA. It was the first probe to successfully land on Mars, its objectives, analyze the atmosphere and take High-rez images of Mars from space and on the surface. So clearly, my version had to be able to do all these things and more!

Praise to 50 Years of Mars exploration! Hopefully 2020 will come soon so the Mars Lab can make its 9 month journey to join it's brethren Curiosity and Opportunity!

*More Coming Soon, Post your Stock Ideas Below with pictures and all! Rules are...

+Cannot be like, 'I made the death star' sort of thing, think of ideas that Squad would add to the game to either aid in Tutorials or help beginners learn to fly! EXAMPLE: Here is a basic un-manned Voyager probe, now go get it out of the Kerbol system!

+Add pictures or a download if you want, its not very interesting to read a description of your rocket... (press F12 if your on steam to take screen shots)

+You are open to critizem, everyone is, even me. So don't go starting a flame war if someone doesn't like your work, or trys to help you.

Sorry, the 'Insert Image' thing wasn't working, we'll have to live with links for now D:

I would actually like to see something like my X-1 / X-2 Micro Shuttle as a stock craft, with the boosters pre-attached to it. Small winged spaceplanes are a logical step up from Mercury capsules in the low tech career stage, and are good exposure to the benefits of having a re-entry vehicle with functional cross-range capability for precision landings and runway recoveries. The microshuttle even works well without landing gear tech, as it can land on its service bay doors after descending via parachute.

The micro shuttles I built in career pretty much paved the way for spaceplane development, acted as analogues for historical X-1 and X-15 supersonic research aircraft, and allowed for safe experimentation for various re-entry profiles.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the image you have for the launch vehicle is not the one used for the Viking launches. Your image shows a Titan in its original ICBM configuration. The correct Viking launch configuration was a much later Titan IIIE and Centaur upper stage, with a pair of SRBs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titan_IIIE

The image on the Wiki page shows the Voyager launch vehicle, but scrolling down to the chart shows a link showing that a similar configuration was used for the Viking launches. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viking_1#/media/File:Titan_3E-Centaur_launches_with_Viking_1.jpg

Sorry to be so nitpicky, but I watched both Viking launches and landings when they happened, and I just wanted you to have the most accurate information available. BTW, the launch date for Viking 1 was August 20, 1975, so it's just been 40 years. Viking 2 was launched on September 9, 1975.

Like most players (I suspect) I never use the stock ships apart from tutorials and having a quick look at stuff when a new release drops.

I do think there should be one or two stock satellites that get used for the contracts - launch 'this satellite' into that orbit etc. As well as those used for tutorials and basic design examples.

First thing I do on a new game version is delete those so they don't clutter my sandbox menu. I don't think I've ever launched even one of them in all my time playing KSP.

I thought I was the only one.

IMHO imperfect stock rockets are fine. Player should be able to find their flaws and fix them, it's part of a learning processer. However, they should get some visual polish.

I stand with Ashlain and viktor19 here.

As soon as you get to know how to make a proper, the stock ships become pointless. They're not even that well built (and beautiful) and you're better off building a brand new one than try to use or modify the stock ones.

And they're outdated too... Asparagus is so 0.90 ! :P

Yep, deleting the stock craft is just part of installing KSP.

As others have said, having imperfect stock craft as training aids for new players is good.

My comment was not meant to imply should be removed. They can be good training aids, though I preferred to learn the hard way. They also are important for demonstration purposes I suppose.

However, I would like to see them put off into their own category. Kind of like we have "VAB" and "SPH" buttons, there should be a "Stock Craft" button. Then I wouldn't have to bother deleting them. They don't take up much space and aren't in RAM or anything so the only reason they get deleted is because of clutter on the menu.

None. I find pleasure in the design and launching of my own creations. I've never used or loaded any of the stock craft nor have I ever used a craft from someone else. Being able to design and build your own ships is what makes KSP so much better than Orbitersim. Of course I designed and built many of my favorite scifi ships from TV and movies for Orbitersim, but I found KSP much less time intensive to design a ship and just a heck of a lot more fun to play.

Maybe my basic 1.25 meter rocket with sequenced SRBs, six fleas in total. 3 per sequence. It's just an LVT30 with 2 striped tanks and and the upper stage has half of a striped tank with an 909. A small fairing, too. It's a good sat launcher, and could put a small probe on a high energy trajectory with a Flea upper stage.

The launch vehicle was designed this way as a personal challenge, i already knew about the Titan IIIE being larger then the ICBM model. When i said 50 years, i counted Mariner 4 too, and that flew by Mars in 1964, so as of last year, Mars Exploration has lasted 50 years.
