I Can Munshoot Alpha 13

Recommended Posts

Challenge - Flyby the Mun and return to land on Kerbin (with a twist)

I've been playing KSP since v0.21, so I missed out on all the fun (and obscene difficulty) of the Alpha versions of the game.

For most of us, getting into orbit and going to the Mun, or Minmus, is a piece of cake. It wasn't always that way though.

I came across this thread where there is a compiled list of downloads for most of the original 'free' Alpha versions. For a laugh, I decided to see how difficult it actually was; and it is bloody hard, especially in the first alphas. I've seen some YouTube videos showing people getting into orbit using v0.7.3, but I came nowhere close. I was successful in v0.13.3 of launching a craft and doing a flyby of the Mun, so that is what I am challenging you guys to do too.

You will need the Alpha version of course, so here are the download links.

v0.13.3 - PC

v0.13.3 - Mac

To enter, I'd like a minimum of a screenshot on the launchpad of your craft, a shot passing over the Mun, and a shot landed safely back at Kerbin.

I'm not intending to create any type of scoring system for this challenge (It is my first shot at creating one), but I will keep track of who has completed it, and award you with your name on the Alpha Dogs list below, and also the following badge:

Alpha Dogs!

* Poncho

* Legendary Emu

* pacbard

* Reactordrone (extra credit - Mun landing)

* KerikBalm (extra credit - Mun landing)

* Xiej (extra credit - no parachute)

* littlebuddy0 (extra credit - Mun landing)

* Bluegillbronco2

* RocketPropelledGiraffe

* Mattssheep4

* Scarecrow (extra credit - Bulls-eye KSC Landing)

Extra rep if you can do other neat stuff in Alpha 13, such as landing on the Mun and returning to Kerbin. Make Jeb proud!

OooOOhhh! I will do! Besides, you actually have a badge to give.

Mind if I use MechJeb?

- - - Updated - - -

Nevermind, MechJeb is unfindable for this version

If anyone finds mods for the alpha versions, then by all means use them.

I got a bit busy with my kids last night, so will try to post my flight tonight instead. :confused:

---edit---

Ok, here is my Munshot:

This was a fun challenge. I launched 2 ships, one of which I attempted to land and ended up tearing off the main engine.

Good job. Glad you enjoyed the challenge. Added you to the alpha dog list.

It was fun! I definitely over-engineered the spaceship. Here are the pictures:

Wow, moar boosters indeed. lol.

Anyone else really like the gradient on the AP/PE orbit lines?

That worked surprisingly well considering I had no idea what the parts stats were. First attempt got a flyby of the Mun, second had a decoupling crash which took out my engine and forced an abort but the third shot was good and got into an Munar orbit. Initially had a collision course with the Mun so had to do a radial burn to correct but seemed to have plenty of fuel left when I got back to Kerbin. Might try for a landing next time.

Nice job Reactordrone, adding you to the Alpha Dog list. In my attempts I always ended up on a collision course with the Mun too. :)

Working on my mun mission... Awesome challenge!

Edit: We are making progress!

Can anyone tell me why this thing keeps falling apart when I touch the ground?

Nice one. You don't have to land on the Mun for this challenge though. Perhaps it's some sort of alpha Kraken attack when you touch down.

I know it's not technically part of the challenge but, fourth attempt at a landing and success. The parts have a low impact tolerance and ships do tend to dismantle themselves if you set down a little hard. Broke off engines on the second and third attempt.

Great job. I've given you extra credit on the Alpha Dog list. :cool:

Yes! I'm sooo going to try this!

My first KSP version was the 13.3. demo. I eventually completed a mün-landing, but that was a long time ago.

So for nostalgia's sake I will try again.

You gotta love the impromptu landing legs!

This reminds me that the old style parts are available as a parts pack. They probably need to be reworked a bit to to be balanced for the new physics changes, but it would be cool to add a category with just the legacy parts for the mod.

Wow... this game has come a long way since then... even between .13 and .18 (the earliest version I played).

My lander ended up looking very very similar to reactordrone's...

First attempt (after even getting to orbit... somehow this version is even choppier on my computer.. though it wasn't showing a high cpu demand... the staging was a mess, and telling when tanks were empty before staging... onion/aspargus style was a real pain)... landed on uneven terrain, not good results:

gzwtorj.png

No quicksave... ouch.

Second attempt, inserted into orbit first (earlier one was direct landing), and circled around (slowly, thanks to the different time warp speed threshholds) to land a large crater.

kerbinrise:

TQ1f7hO.png

I swear I made this without looking at reactordrone's lander

aTaRqEZ.png

The first version used the fixed fins (also 12 m/s impact tolerance), but the sloped fins gave me more clearance

Landing site:

Taking off:

HeqaPT3.png

I decided that I didn't need to go into orbit, I was in a good position for a direct escape/return burn

DdKQ0lH.png

Still had fuel in the drop tanks, core stage untouched:

QsTS1uq.png

At soi transition.. i saw I overdid the escape burn:

ZucAaMI.png

Its not like you can't slam into the atmosphere at very high speed and nearly perpendicular to the surface in these old versions.. but I made the return trajectory nice anyway.

CGd0zrP.png

I used what was left plus some of the core stage to make sure I didn't overshoot and go for another orbit around (I'm not sure if a 35km PE was enough... I overshot my correction for 20km, as I was distracted keeping it pointing retrograde with no SAS)

Rentry was not an issue, as it never was in the earlier versions:

Jx9DhcG.png

I actually like the old water graphics... I had hear the water was like concrete in the earlier versions... I though it was literally just a texture on a solid surface... but with engine breaking, I touched down, and found it to be quite floaty... I could have saved weight and not put a decoupler for the pod on there.

Apparently there were some pretty poorly optimized builds in the early days. I cam across a thread the other day that covered it. Quite interesting to see the differences in frame rates in all the versions.

I landed on the water in one of my attempts, and it wasn't floaty at all. It was like landing on a solid 'water textured' bit of land. You are right though, the water effects were cooler back then. There was some limitation in Unity apparently, so they had to nix it.

Me! My asparagus staging isn't working, and I can't fix it because the editor is bad..... Also, my bottom stage is made up of one swivel surrounded by 6 reliants, because I can't put swivels on the outside because they flash red and green. Got to the moon, smashed into Kerbin because the SAS is bad.

Landed on Mun!

Forgot Parachutes!

Had more than enough fuel, aerobraked and used retro-rocket strategy to get home in 1(Crew Cabin) piece. (The rest of the rocket fell apart)

Adding you to the Alpha Dog list. Nice job.

One thing that made it so much harder, was that the Alpha versions didn't show you your trajectory when you go into another body's SOI, until you actually ARE IN the body's SOI. So, I didn't know I was on a Mun impact trajectory until I timewarped halfway there.

On my second attempt, I didn't know that I was escaping Kerbin until I found out I was in orbit around Kerbol with only 10000x time warp. I gave up on that one, even though I already made it to the Mun.:huh:
