so i finally decided to do my own challenge properly... here is the end result  http://imgur.com/gallery/dP47O/new

i used empty ore tanks instead of the normal liquid fuel tanks people seam to use for boats because of how the ore tanks give off a slight bounce instead of just be something that floats. besides that it look a lot like a hydroplane except for the fact that it isn't propeller driven

I have a boat that will happily cruise at 172 m/s in normal engine mode and will hit 225 m/s with afterburner before disintegrating. Unfortunately it's a hydrofoil rather than a hydroplane so I guess is ineligible for this challenge. Will go back to the drawing board.

The issue in this challenge isn't going faster - there is more than enough thrust to go around - it is avoiding the "X crashed down hard and was destroyed"  messages that cruising on the water at those speeds cause. Weighing impact resistance vs buoyancy is the issue.
