Small, light lander design?

I'm working on a big spaceship similar in concept to the Nautilus X, and like the Nautilus X, it wouldn't be able to enter the atmosphere. Because of this, I decided to have smaller ships on it that can land and return to it, but I don't have too much experience with landers alone. Ideally I would want something that can land on and return to orbit from a planet with at atmosphere. It would require a delta-V of 8,000 in both directions to land on and take off of Eve, so that's unlikely, but I'd like it to at least be able to return from Laythe which would be about 2,000.

Does anybody have any good designs for a lander/return craft like this? Even if it isn't exactly this, ideas would help me design something.

Haven't done any atmo landers in 1.05 yet, sorry. But I suspect some of my old tricks might help you:
• a little bit of wing / body lift makes descent and ascent more forgiving;
• combination of wings, a few parachutes, and lightweight retro rockets makes any terrain seem friendly;
• make it a rover, that's just so much more fun to explore;
• adding ISRU and a couple of drills means your lander/rover can explore all over the world;
• jettison those ISRU parts before ascending to orbit.
