Why do KSPers dislike shipping (as in the love version)?

Because there is no storyline in KSP?

Because there is no comprehensible dialogue in KSP?

Because Kerbals are basically asexual plant-people that just want to fly spaceships?

Why should relationships be forced into situations where they don't belong?

Fan fiction in general can be REALLY weird though so I don't go anywhere near it and as a result I won't know if KSP "shipping" ever exists at any point in time. People are welcome to do it if they want though, the internet is a broad and free place after all. However, to ask the question why there isn't "shipping" on the forums of what is essentially an E rated sandbox game is a bit weird, you will have better luck on a fan-fiction specialist forum/board/website.

Not quoting DuoDex here but I can't for the life of me figure out how to delete this quote box so I'm just going to roll with it. I think Cantab had a good point. Kerbal characters can be pretty one dimensional, mainly due to a lack of official canon about them outside of the space program, and a one dimensional character is a pretty dull one to write a relationship for, so why bother. To my mind 'shipping' compounds the problem by sounding cheap and cliched to begin with.

There's plenty you can do with kerbals to flesh them out. My fanfic ones have family lives, children, hobbies, worries, jobs etc. etc. Oddly, romance doesn't feature much in there, although that probably says more about me as a writer than anything else.

Maybe because this is the game about people totally in love with science, engineering, exploration, research, adventures...

Anybody for shipping Lisa Kerman with the Negative Gravioli Detector? ;)  Just kidding

No seriously, for some reason it appears many don't. Why is that?

Especially Jeb X Val, which is my favourite shipping in KSP .

Because it's as relevant to the game as astrology.

This is why I was never a fan of the decision to make kerbals specifically male or female.

They should have been just left as kerbals, nothing more, nothing less.

Correction: The original Kerbals should not have been made to obviously be cartoonized human males.

Once that was done, however, the correct second step was to make female versions as well.

Career Mode is sort of a storyline :-p

How would that kind of crack shipping even work?

Really good point. If only a certain % of members are at all interested in fanfic, and only some % of those are interested in shipping, then that could be your explanation right there.

But there appears to be an active mindset against it.

I gave you a more complete answer to that earlier, and there were several others as well. Not sure now whether your purpose was to get your question answered, or to try and convince everyone that shipping kerbals is a good thing. :) Look, people play this game for all sorts of reasons. People get into fiction for all sorts of reasons. Or, they don't.

Me, I'm kind of an old guy. I'm really interested in the relationship between Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, because those are two great characters and there is both human and super-human complexity to what happens between them; their romance is integral to the story. I also play chess. When I open with the Caro-Kann, I don't wonder if my pawn on d5 has something going on with white's e4, and whether my c6 pawn is jealous. Chess isn't that kind of game.

For me, writing KSP fiction enhances the adventure. That's why I do it. Others might see KSP more like a chess game. I get that. There are loads of people on this site who aren't interested in my comic or any other fiction and that's OK. And there are those like yourself who like to ship Val and Jeb, or Mort and Gene, or whatever, and that's OK too. There is no storyline. There is no spoon. You build what you want to build, you go where you want to go, you imagine whatever you imagine.

I'm not particularly opposed or in favour of 'shipping', I just don't particularly think of it when it comes to KSP.

Many of my reasons are in line with what's already been stated above, but the main one has to do with the fact that I'm concerned with building spacecraft - many of which will probably work. (I'm 30% sure!)

Given that I may be sending the occupants to a rather nasty, but visually impressive death, I find it best not to imagine detailed backstories and whatnot for them.

Like so many others, this thread is as interesting as it is pointless :D. Ford or Chevy, Mac or PC, MechJeb or no MechJeb. The thing with one-dimensional, disposable characters is that they lend themselves completely to the imagination of the player. Or not. On any new save I typically "retire" Jeb, Bill & Bob right away and assemble a cadre of randomnames specifically so I can create any world I want for them... or no world at all and simply smash them into the ground with no guilt. Ok maybe a little. I certainly never thought I'd be the kind to write fanfic. Squad "officializing" female Kerbals of course opens up a whole realm of implications... or you can just strand a bunch of the little buggers on Eve and forget about them. There's no "right" or "wrong" way to play the game, or daydream about it. It's what the player makes it. But we should all take a cue from our Kerbals and not take anything about it too seriously. Insist that your Kerbals are gender-neutral fungal fruiting bodies if you like. Insist that their interpersonal relationship drama rivals daytime TV if you like. Heck, go full-on Rule 34 if that's your thing. Just don't tell me anything about it! :sealed:

I believe it goes something like - "On the internet, there is a porn site for anything you can imagine and a lot of things you don't want to imagine."

Personally, my Kerbals are tri-gendered, and relationships and mating are ... complex to say the least. All in all, it's just more fun and way cooler to ride 150 tons of explosives into space!

WTF is Tri-gender?
