I believe they are related to post count but haven't looked into what threshold causes a new one to be added.

Looks like they are a factor of post count. Essentially like the rep bars from VBulletin, but for posts.

 

EDIT: And, on the subject of posts, that one was my 600th! Yay!

It definitely has to do with post count, can confirm. But, again, no idea what the thresholds are.

Based on replies to this topic it appears that somewhere above 914 and below 2395, five dots come in. I'd wager a guess at 1000 or so. It is also so that two dots are evident at 92 posts.

We could do a point graph, post count versus dots, and with enough data we could guestimate the threshold.
