[STOCK] Functional LCVP (Landing Craft) Replica

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

LCVPs (Landing Craft, Vehicle and Personnel), were used to deliver troops by water, where they would be deployed from transport ships. The basic design and cheap materials made LCVPs straightforward and inexpensive to build. The ramp on this replica is fully functional and surprisingly robust - it uses @Majorjim's thermometer bearing. Use staging to detach the ramp, and when controlling the ramp use Action Group 1 to toggle the latch and pitch controls to raise or lower it.

Parts: 238

Mass: 18.1 tons

That Jeep gets me everytime. The shape is great! I can imagine how fun it would be to have a race in these in multiplayer! Good work dude.

We could have a triathlon! Race the LCVPs from point A to point B, deploy the jeep and drive to point C, then fly a plane to point D to finish the race!

Am I sensing a challenge coming on?  Perhaps with a full transport ship as well!

I have a modified Fokker Triplane for the plane leg, has a nice view!

It's nice, though a WWI German fighter might not quite fit with the rest of the crafts :P

But I think I'll make my own jeep: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/114312-amrsd-willys-mb-amp-bm-8-8-82mm-rocket-launcher-variant-quotjeepquot/

So the LCVP should start at a place off the KSC shore, using hyperedit to put it there.  Then drive the jeep over the broken runway to the plane?  It could be flown out to the island airfield.  We'd have to make some rules for the craft, ie. what kind of jets they can use.  It sounds like fun!

Thermometer bearing? I must know more!

It's more of a hinge. I developed it to make as small a swinging part as possible. It has a lot of uses but requires a delicate touch as they can be fragile. You need to surround the engine bell of the smallest engines with thermometer parts. 4 will work 8 works better. you want the part with thermometers to be a separate craft (decoupled after launch) from the engine bell. Download Rix craft and have a look. I have a nice example of what can be done with them in the door on my Duna direct mission craft hab:  Kerbal X download

Also, can you send me the .craft file? My own hinge isn't working.

^Majorjim's will probably be a better example than mine - the hinges on the LCVP were built specifically for that position and purpose.

I must have look at yours. brb.

OK had a look. You did a good job, you got the extra 4 or in the case of a one way door 2 thermometers to stop the sticking. And the outside 'blocker' thermometers. They are crucial.

It can be tricky to set up one to rotate reliably, but it just takes persistence.

It definitely took a while to get it to work well, at first it would fall out, then it would slide laterally and break off, but now you can run a jeep onto it at full speed and it'll barely budge :D
