Will 1.1 break savegames?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering, will 1.1 break my savegame? This would be good to know since it would make me play a bit sandbox and stop pushing my career mode.

I mean craft breaking is okay. The thing I'm worried about is alle the science I gathered (almost all in the SOI of kerbin).

It's an engine update, one of the biggest internal changes a game can experience. If I were you, I would operate under the default assumption that it will horribly break existing saves.

If it ends up not breaking stuff, then I will have the pleasure of being positively surprised... and if it breaks, well, that's what I was prepared for anyway.

Always plan for the worst; hope for the best.

With that said, yes, it will break your saved games. Your favorite mods will be outdated (for a while), and your modded craft won't load.

Bite the bullet, play vanilla mode for a while, and enjoy the new changes and new version of the game.

--- updated ---

Note: That response almost sounds like the forum game, "make a wish and have it horribly corrupted"...

In my previous experiences - yes. I run a vanilla game and a modded game. I've had the same vanilla game since .22, but in ALL fairness, as @Porkjet and others have changed stock parts, there are times that craft may not load or may look differently after updates are applied.

@SQUAD has been very good to its players in that there is little disruption to the game when played in vanilla mode. Now with the update to the new Unity platform, there could be some unintended consequences and even vanilla games may be broken. What I am planning to do is to update my saved games folder backup after each time I play (even on the vanilla game) so that if the saved game is broken, I can import the craft - at least...

Awesome!
I'm doing the same, saving the entire folder after I do something cool, just in case.
And other than chatterer, which shouldn't hurt anything, I've been doing my project vanilla, so there may be a chance it will make it!
And even if it doesn't, if I can import the vehicles, I should be able to salvage the rest.

I always assume that there will be some changes to how things work, any part performance balancing is bound to affect something. I would guess that if you finish or land any critical or complex ships before you update then any impact will be minimal.

Keep your current version, and copy your save into the new one, then if it is broken you can still finish it anyway.

It's a nice change of pacing for this forum to read a sentence begining with "SQUAD has been very good to its players", eh?

Oh man. I so wish I had the dilligence to keep the same save for long. I even deleted my backup saves a while back when I realized I was never going back for them.

My problem is right now I have very little free time to play KSP - between the new semester starting, changes going on in the small business I run, and trying to create a new class for the summer, I am lucky if I get any time for gaming. If I do, it is because I am staying up way too late to do so. When I've been away from a game for a while, whether it is KSP, Cities: Skylines, Banished, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, or even Civilization V, and try to come back to a saved game, I forget what my overall strategy was... So, I then do what I always do... delete the saved game and start a new one.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri... oh wow, I thought I was the only one that still played that!  Great game!

I believe the save game format is 100% under Squads direct control, so if it does break it won't be because of the game engine change.  Since there hasn't been a lot of mention of parts updating this round, even craft should be fairly safe (though versions after that we ARE expecting old rocket parts to get updated).

Yes, it is a great game. It is why I was EXTREMELY disappointed in Sid Meier's Beyond Earth. I was hoping we would see some of the old within the new.

Agreed... I've tried some of the later ones, but I always go back to Alpha Centauri.

Well, the devs said somewhere ( IIRC in a SQUADCast some weeks ago ) that most likely 1.1 will not break savegames ... and given the structure of KSP saves, I tend to believe that it will be like that.

That is NOT the same as the saves giving similar behaviour in 1.05 and in 1.1. We already know that atleast antennas will not work in the same way and who knows what the optimization code cahnges will do to individual ships ( I do remember the issues Harv rework of the fuel lines code in 0,90 ( ? ) made to preexisting ships )

Oh and SMAC, great, GREAT game, probably the best Firaxis ever made. It is just too bad the game can't really handle better resolutions :( ( the game can be upscaled, but ... )
