Building a Space Station into an Asteroid

Recommended Posts

Can't build IN them.

You can only attach stuff using the claw, or KAS if you don't want to claw-jitter your station apart.

(I'm currently in the process of dragging a Class E in LKO to function as refuel/crew transfer/research station. The part count will probably kill my fps, but I'm betting on 1.1 to keep it playable when finished. If not, I'll just reorder the station modules to be stand alone, and mine the astroid dry.)

With KAS you can attach radial attachment points to the asteroid. On those you can attach just about anything. What I usually do is: radial attachment point, then the 4 person 2.5 m part, on top of that a structural fuselage and a docking port. Excellent for transferring crew. (BTW you can transfer crew "through" the asteroid.)

I've tried building a station this way in Duna orbit once. It was a part of a contract. But all the requirements for the contract made the station have SO MANY PARTS that that game just bogged down to ridiculous levels whenever it was on screen. And to top it off, it wouldn't register the contract as completed!

I'm hoping 1.1 will address the bog down problem. I really want to build big ships and stations, but it just gets unbearably slow for me, even when using a relatively modest space station. (My PC is no slouch either.)

I`ve currently got an Asteroid in a low Kerbin orbit and i`ve attached lots of small parts to the asteroid. Because of the way asteroids work in KSP, its one big Refueling station, Mining the asteroid to refuel its supply! :D

Don't they eventually run out of fuel, though?
