Then, budget cuts occur, and you must resort to another nearby object.

I build a small satellite to be placed in a Molniya Orbit, giving communications to the North Pole.

The satellite burns up in the atmosphere and crashes down

I build a small ssto to send to the Mün

Turns out there was an asterix beside functional, and therefore did not actually mean that it was functional - which in turn sent it flying into Kerbin shortly after its launch.

The Kerbals start building a small moon...

The rover blows up because the Mun has no sky:P Or, on a more "serious" note, it lands before you realize you forgot the science. (Happened to me once...It was awful)

I take an FTL to the planet Kepler-452b, in an attempt to put a bunch of Earth organisms on the planet and see how they survive.

What did you expect? That's not even a space mission!

I shoot one of those soda bottle rockets out an airlock on the ISS.  Totally for scientific research purposes. Definitely. See? I'm holding a clipboard. Very scientific. And a pen. I have a pen to write science on my clipboard with. *writes the word "SCIENCE" on clipboard* *uses pen spring to launch it across the module* Woosh! Rockets. I'm doing rocket science on my clipboard.

Over time, it decelerates and then falls back into the system. Then, the probe collides with Laythe, and therefore gives life to Laythe.

I send a probe to Laythe to investigate the life forms.

It gets eaten before taking any pictures.

I make a ladder on a 72 km tall launch clamp, then have a Kerbal climb up the whole thing and jump onto a station whose orbit intercepts said clamp. Yes, I'm expecting the whole thing to explode. I'm not trying to accomplish anything productive.
